We're only a month out from the All-Star game, and I was trying to piece together who the likely reps would be from each team. Are the rosters 25 or 30 players this year?

Yankees: Soriano, Clemens and Mussina are locks. After that....hmm. Jeter, Bernie and Rivera are usually stalwarts, but they've all been hurt.
Red Sox: Pedro and Nomar are locks, and maybe Bill Mueller gets a backup slot at the weak 3B position.
Blue Jays: Delgado, Halladay, Vernon Wells and possibly Cory Lidle. Maybe Greg Myers as the backup catcher, but that's a longshot.
Orioles: I would've said Hairston, but now he's hurt. Jorge Julio or Jeff Conine?
Devil Rays: Rocco Baldelli is a lock (finally a Tampa player that deserves it), and maybe Lance Carter.

Indians: C.C. Sabathia.
White Sox: Colon and Ordonez will likely get backup slots, but that's it.
Royals: Sweeney for sure, and that's it.
Twins: Jacque Jones and Eddie Guardado for sure, and maybe Kyle Lohse.
Tigers:..........good lord. Higginson?

Mariners: Ichiro, Moyer, Boone, Edgar Martinez. Maybe Arthur Rhodes.
A's: Mulder, Zito, Foulke, Eric Chavez, maybe Ramon Hernandez as backup catcher. Tim Hudson might get shafted by one of the players from a bad team.
Rangers: A-Rod and Carl Everett.
Angels: Anderson, Glaus, Washburn, Salmon. Seems like a lot, but remember that Mike Scioscia is picking the team. Maybe even Brendan Donnelly.

Braves: Sheffield, Furcal, Smoltz for sure. Maybe Chipper and Marcus Giles.
Expos: All three Killer V's
Marlins: Luis Castillo and Pudge Rodriguez
Phillies: Kevin Millwood and that's about it.
Mets: Robbie Alomar?

Cubs: Prior is a lock, Sosa will probably get in despite his injury, and maybe any one of Patterson, Borowski or Wood.
Cardinals: Pujols, Morris, Renteria, and Rolen are all locks, and Jim Edmonds will probably get in there too.
Pirates: Lots of borderline guys...Kendall, Kenny Lofton, Jeff D'Amico, Mike Williams. Any one will make it.
Astros: Bagwell, Wagner, Kent, and probably Oswalt.
Brewers: Richie Sexson
Reds: Kearns seems likely, and maybe either Williamson or Casey.

Padres: Another crap team. Ramon Vazquez? Sean Burroughs?
Giants: Bonds, Jason Schmidt, Tim Worrell
Dodgers: Gagne and Green, maybe Kevin Brown or Ishii.
Rockies: Todd Helton for sure, and maybe Jay Payton or Shawn Chacon.
Diamondbacks: Maybe Luis Gonzalez or Schilling.

Edited to add the D-Backs ([/shame])

Re: the White sox representative I find it hard to believe that if he pitches this way for another month that Esteban Loaiza won't get a starting slot. He's 8-2 with a 1.96 ERA. If that's not enough for the all-star team, I don't know what is.

Granted, the Diamondbacks have been pretty bad so far ("They're gettin' better!"), but that's no reason to leave them off the list altogether! :-)

Luis Gonzalez. Maybe Schilling, just on principle.

I was about to say that Jeter, Bernie and Rivera are all going to be on the team anyway, then I remembered that the Yankees weren't in the series last year.

We could see fewer Yankees in the All Star game than we've had in years.

Thank God...I wonder if Dusty will reward the Giants he had last year, or the Cubs. It can't be any worse than Brenly at last years game. Did he take Counsell? I remember the DBacks being upset that he didn't make the team, despite not performing at All-Star caliber.

It looks to me like the teams that should get the most all-stars are the Braves, Yankees, and Rangers.

The Braves should get A. Jones, Sheffield, Furcal, Smoltz, and Javy Lopez at least.

The Yankees should get Posada, Clemens, Mussina, Soriano: Mondesi and Wells should deserve a look.

The Rangers should get A-Rod, Juan Gonzalez, Everett, and Palmerio - 500!, Urbina and Blalock deserve a look.

Glaus and Donnely are the only Angels that really deserve it so far.

Blalock "deserves a look?" Blalock deserves to be the starting third baseman. Bill Mueller might give him a run for it, but Blalock has more time in, I think.

Shea Hillenbrand would have deserved to be the starting third baseman if he wasn't traded. Now he probably won't even get onto the team. That sucks, IMHO. Hopefully Dusty will remember what he did with Boston and not just look at the stats.

I don't know, man. I love Shea as much as the next Sox fan, and he's had some awesome moments with the Sox, but I think we tend to overrate him. He's probably the easiest guy to cheer for, but that doesn't translate to skill on the diamond. Is he good? Sure. But he isn't great, and I don't even think he's better, on balance, than Mueller.

How about Woody Williams of the Cardinals? If Morris is a lock, then so is Woody, who fell one day short of getting through April and May undefeated. His seven wins tie him for the NL lead and his ERA is lower than Morris.

Other than that, and Loaia, I can't think of any big additions off the top of my head. Maybe Gil Meche, Preston Wilson or Mike Lowell. And while I have no place for a .225 hitter, Adam Dunn wouldn't surprise me if he's invited as long as he continues to lead the league in HRs. The only name that IMO really needs to be removed from the list is Eric Chavez. Not with the season he's having.

Looking at the Tigers, Padres, and Mets, I'm reinforced in my belief that each team should not automatically be given a representative. Alomar doesn't belong anywhere near an All-Star team, and neither does Higginson. If I had to, I would probably send Benitez from the Mets simply on his high number of saves, or maybe Leiter or Glavine if they can string together a series of good starts. Either way, they'd end up taking a spot from someone who's more deserving.

And damn it, home field advantage is on the line! This year more than bragging rights is at stake and I want only the top guys out there!

I'd say send Benitez, as nobody else who's playing for the Mets deserves to make it.

For whoever cares, Dimitri Young should make it from the Tigers, as he's the only one out there that's not embarassing himself on a nightly basis. I'd almost be tempted to put him on there anyway. (Although Maroth should make it for his outstanding performance - come on, we all know how bad his record is.)

Blalock should be the starting third baseman, hands down. However, since his name isn't Troy Glaus, he won't get the votes for that. (Although Glaus should be on the team.)

I think a lot of people are short-changing Preston Wilson's first half because he plays at Coors. Those numbers aren't half bad, and should land him on the team way before Payton is even considered.

AL Voting, though 5/26

NL Voting, through 5/26

Discuss. I'm tempted to try and vote Hillenbrand onto the AL starters, just to see what happens.

The fan voting for the NL is reasonable, but the AL voting is crap. Bernie Williams and Jason Giambi do NOT deserve starting spots. Hell, even Manny Ramirez doesn't deserve it, since there are outfielders having better seasons (Vernon Wells, anyone?)

Yeah. One look at the voting confirmed that this discussion is a big waste of time. The All-Star game is a popularity contest and nothing more.

Anyone catch the 5th inning today?

The Tigers' best player has undoubtedly been the Yankees infield.

Uh...Melvin Mora is hitting .350 and is 2nd in the American League in Batting Average.

The thing about more is he's a career .250-.260 hitter (something like that), so he's playing way over his head. If he keeps it up for the next month, then I'll retract that statement. I just remember his unspectacular years for the Mets pretty well, so I'm going to be hesitant before supporting him.

Oh, and for the D-Rays, Aubrey Huff isn't having that bad a year, you know. 13 HR at this point isn't too shabby.

Giving the players more voting power was the one good thing they did with the All Star changes. Frankly, they should choose the starters.

As per the Cubs, Patterson should go over Sosa, but I doubt the fans will decide that. I would personally go with Prior, Patterson and Sosa. Wood has been pitching quite well, but isn't getting the wins to back the stats up. If he can reverse that, then him.

Huh? The only guy really outdoing Counsell last year was Lowell IMO, and he made it in starting. Brenly's major mess-up was Miller instead of Lo Duca.

Mike Lowell, Aaron Boone, possibly Pujols, depending on how many games he had logged at third before the Rolen trade, and even David Bell were all having better seasons than Counsell last year. Can't agree with you more about the Damien Miller thing though.

Edit: Rolen made it in as the starter. Lowell was the backup.

Pujol's fielding position should be DH, they had to move Polanco from 2nd to help out until they got Rolen.

With Piazza out, it's gotta be Pudge catching, Lieberthal or Santiago backing him up I guess.

As far as D'backs, Gonzo and Curt would seem to be the only ones, maybe Baerga as a backup INF?
