Hey guys, I saw this over at Film Threat and thought some of you might be interested. It's a mildly negative review of a documentary about a girl trying to get on the wrestling team in a Texas high school.

I find it funny that they assume the reason that girls aren't allowed to wrestle guys when they reach the age of 14 is because the girls would kick the boys asses. Yep, I am sure that's it. And it couldn't have anything to do with liability issues (ie insurance) in the off chance that a guy just might be able to physically overpower the girl, and cause injury. Or maybe even the sexual issues of having guys rolling around with girls, and the appropriateness of sanctioning such activity. Nah, that's highly unlikely, the girls would always win, and kick the boys "collective ass", and they just can't have that in Texas. (Whether you agree with this or not, I am positive that most of the thought process is that the girls would get hurt, not that the girls proper place is in the kitchen or something like that.)

This is especially funny when they even mention themselves that this girl is starting to get her ass kicked due to physical issues, and having these sexual issues, and questioning why she is even in the sport. (Which is followed up with "on the other hand", after which the law is mentioned. Exactly how is this law in contrast with her feelings? Looks like in many ways, we are still "on the same hand" to me.)

I don't think this documentary is really trying to make the case for anything. The review makes it sound like it just kind of surveys the area and lets people decide for themselves. This is just a film showing a weird little situation and how people act in it. I'm more interested in seeing her "Little League Dad", for instance.

You have extremely valid points about size and weight in all of this. If a girl can train to reasonably compensate for that though, then I say let her have at it. The review says she's having more trouble beating guys as they get older, not that she's awful or Tiger Woods. Boys will go through that too if they aren't focused. If she can stay competetive then I don't see a problem.

I agree that the point of separating the boys and girls is more for girls not getting hurt than because of outmoded ideas of what a girl should be like. You have to wonder though how much that affects the state athletic board. If a girl is talented enough to win state or whatnot, you have to wonder how much of that machismo factors into it.

Plus, outside of anything it's about, the film is documenting a girl's life from 12 to high school age. That would put a strain on just about any kid, let alone one trying to make a big exception to a long standing rule.

Anyway, I hope this doesn't turn into a big off topic debate. I just dig this type of movie and though at least the puro lovin' women wieners would find it interesting.

It does sound rather interesting, but I'd recommend GAEA Girls (available at RFvideo.com). If you want to see what it takes to make it in the joshi promotions, this is worth a look. Really eye opening stuff.

Ahh, the bane of adolescence. Men grow bigger during this time, women less so. And the way wrestling matches are structured now, explosive power is favored over long-term control. Men have the muscles for that power. Women have to develop spiritual energy to match the muscle disadvantage.

As an actual amatuer wrestler I've seen a few female wrestlers. They weren't in my weight class so I never got the chance to wrestle them but I will say that if they work hard enough they can match a guy. How ever, the girls I've seen in the North East Missouri Area(where I live/wrestle in) a majority of the time this is what will happen to female wrestlers.

1.)Wrestle each other on the team

2.)Old enough to join a Women's wrestling league and tour

3.)Attempt to go with the boys. But in the same night I saw this girl give a guy a run for his money she got destroyed so to speak by a guy.

I have no problem with girls wrestling in my opinion,I mean its fair to both sex. I can easily understand the stigma and reasons why its not really common, because of injury of a girl and such..then again thats what those waivers are for.

According to the law, if a public school doesn't offer a woman's version of the sport (female wrestling, female soccer, whatever) then girls are allowed to try out for boys' teams.

It works the other way too. Does your son want to play field hockey? If a boys' team isn't offered, he has the legal right to join the school's field hockey team even if every other player there is female.

I was an amateur wrestler too. I saw a few girls wrestle but none of them had the strength to do well against decent competition. Wrestling often has strange mixes of competitors. I once wrestled a blind guy (and nearly had my ass kicked). You had to start off touching hands so he'd know where you are and you weren't allowed to stop touching him to angle for a leg or something. It was really odd.

That's really cool about the blind wrestler. My grandfather was a blind carpenter so I love hearing stories like that. And hey - at least they didn't put you in a hood to wrestle him like they did with Rick Martell!

I wondered if there were women's wrestling programs after I posted but I didn't want to string the thread out if no one else was interested. I've never seen any. Do they have many schools in their circuit or whatever?

It was a strange match. I know it sounds amazingly shallow to complain or to argue that a BLIND guy had an advantage over me, since obviously, having sight is a great advantage. But I had never wrestled in a match like that and it was really awkward.

We had to start the match touching hands, palm-to-palm, and the ref stopped whenever one of us broke away from the other. I had more of a freestyle background, so I was more comfortable moving around. From what I remember, the standing up part & having to stop the match when we broke from each other were the only rule changes. That and I could use the out-of-bound circle to my advantage because the other guy couldn't see tham, so if I could stretch a take-down on myself out-of-bounds, it wouldn't count, something he couldn't do.

I'm nearly 30 and the match took place when I was in high school, so it was a while ago. If I remember right, that wrestler finished the year with a record better than 50/50.
