I have a dilemma. Someone submitted a guest shot to me, that, while overall is pretty good - it has parts that I don't really think are appropriaate.

So.

How would you guys like to see it? Edited? Censored? Ask the guy to take out the stuff, or just leave it and run it for you all to give feedback on?

I personally feel that part of it is tasteless, but since the piece is supposed to be a parody, it sort of makes sense for it to be.

//edit: dilemma. Spelling.

I don't know how much my opinion is worth, but I'd say ask him to re-write the offending parts. If it needs to be offending to be funny, it's probably not worth the post.

I'm not big on censorship, but if you're going to be screening for columns here you should have some standards on what should and should not be "appropriate".

I guess it really depends on what was said, but I'd first tell the person to try to find a better, more people friendly way to say what they were trying to say.

I always bring it back to, "Yeah, but is it funny?"

I think in most cases, mocking the death of Hennig or Miss Elizabeth is tacky. But, if someone could find the one way in which taking potshots at it would be hilarious, I'd applaud them. Genocide is ugly, but Eddie Izzard made some good jokes out of it. If it's good enough to make me forget the horror of the reality underlying it, run that baby.

Then again, I would also worry about feedback. If you allow this person to break rules of decency in his column, will outraged respondents be able to use the same levels of vulgarity or offensiveness in their critiques? Will there be a double-standard? Is there an amenable and easy way to maintain the double-standard (i.e., lock the thread and direct everyone to P.M.)?

It is perfectly reasonable for you to ask him to rework the problematic parts. If he doesn't mind doing that, then dilemma solved. If he doesn't want to change it, & you don't think it's appropriate, don't run it. I'm prefectly fine with having standards for the Guest Columns forum -- that is one of the things distinguishing that forum from the others. I've never seen any evidence that your judgement is overly restrictive -- I have no problem with your sensibilities driving the standards.

Depends what you mean by 'not appropriate'. If there's parts that appear designed simply to offend or upset then I'd ask the person to remove them.

If its just risque humour then I'm with Jeb. If its funny , its funny and I really dont see any boundaries with regards what is suitable material for comedy. I remember reading a column over here about how everything, no matter how tragic at the time, becomes fair game at some point in the future.

Either way, I'd give the guy the chance to remove offending items, or at least justify what he wrote before going for censorship.

Yeah, but Eddie's brilliant, and I doubt that this author qualifies. But who knows.

If it's just making some tacky comment about a dead person, I say nix.

I either ran stuff verbatim, or I didn't run it.

If you feel you have to ask, you've probably already made the decision.

Censorship is wrong. Just cause one person finds something tasteless doesn't mean everyone will.

Why not just run it with perhaps (at most) a warning. What is the tasteless part of said submission that is so bad?
