From CRZ's recap (slashwrestling.com) :

STEPHANIE McMAHON: A few years ago, some people tried to destroy my family. They attacked my father's reputation, they attacked my mother's reputation, and they attacked the World Wrestling Federation. They tried to rip us apart...but all they did was make my family stronger. And that's exactly how America feels right now. Because on Tuesday, America was attacked. Because America is a united nation. And together, we stand strong. I am incredibly proud to be an American citizen, and I will stand up for my rights and my freedom.

Equating terrorist attacks that murdered thousands of innocent people with the U.S. Government's criminal prosecution of her father is what didn't sit too well with many people. At least, that's the way I saw it then, and still see it now.

I believe she compared America rallying together and overcoming 9/11 to Vince beating his charges in the steroid trial.

I think CRZ summed it up nicely in the last paragraph of that recap:

"...No matter *how* many people tell me what a sweetheart Stephanie McMahon is in real life, it doesn't change the fact that, to me, tonight, she came across petty, bitter, vindictive, and concerned solely with herself and twisting every available situation in that direction. And THAT....well, *that* makes me wonder if maybe it's just something she hasn't learned to suppress...to suppress, perhaps, as well as her father."

Well, I personally didn't see what the big deal was about her comments. I just didn't pay much attention to them. I'll go by the "choice of words" philosophy here. I think it was just the wrong choice of words. I didn't really make a big deal out of it, because well, it's not a big deal to me. By the way, I know for a fact she's cool off camera, because I read her interviews.

See, I always took it more as a metaphor. She was saying that her family was unjustly attacked (Well, unjustly in her eyes, anyway), but rather than pull the McMahons apart, it brought them closer and made them stronger than ever, and the same thing was going to happen to this country. Watching the show, I found nothing offensive about what she said, and I've still never understood the sweeping controversy surrounding it.

(Of course, a lot of it stemmed simply from the fact that she is Stephanie McMahon, and everything she does must be wrong.)

Yep, I'm with you guys on this one. I see nothing wrong with what she said. I mean yea, she didn't have to make a comment about her family's struggles, perhaps she should have just said something generic about the attacks, but I don't see it as something to get mad about. It's just the political correctness and overplayed sensitivity that's going around these days.

I always considered the comments to fall more into the 'ill-advised' category than anything else. I don't think for a second that she was trying to equate what she went through to the suffering caused by 9/11.

It was simply meant to be her way of saying that in times of adversity people can come together and become stronger. She should probably have known better than to draw the analogy at such a sensitive time, but I honestly believe she was trying to send a positive message and not trying to imply that what she had been through caused equivalent pain.

This idea wasn't as prevalent in September, 2001 as it is today, remember. (Her comments at that time didn't exactly help PREVENT that idea, either.)

For me they fall in the "ridiculously stupid" category, surely Steph isn't a performer who goes out and "wings it" on the mic, at least certainly not then. Her promos are probably all scripted....so clearly someone in the McMahon clan decided it would be nice to draw that parallel, a parallel that no one but those on the net would be aware of, who says WWE doesn't cater to its Internet fan base? Oh WWE says so.

Edit: Typo.

I agree with Crip. When I heard Steph's comments, it sounded well rehearsed and consistent with her TV persona at the time, quite different from ramblings like Lita's.

I'm pretty sure that's all she was trying to get at. At the time, I thought it was stupid. But emotions were still riding high at the time (this was only two days after the attack). Now that time has passed, and after re-reading the comment, I don't think it's that bad, and I don't think she was trying to say that what happened to her family was just as bad as what happened on 9/11. Just a personal analogy to put over that what doesn't kill you will make you stronger.

I thought she came across as a spoiled little bitch that was either very clearly being disingenuous, or just incredibly deluded if she couldn't tell the difference between an "attack" on her father's sleazy little shithold empire and thousands of innocent lives needlessly being lost.
