Here's what's stupid.

Ryan said what he did in order to make a point: he thinks Kidd's wife is an annoying media whore and needs to cut the shit out. When Ryan said that someone needs to smack her, I'm SURE his absolute intentions were that someone needed to physically extend their arm, open up their palm, and swing it at her face. Thing is, "smack" is so tame (unless it's during super hot Jason vs. Joumana at-home action) that it gets taken seriously. Now, if Ryan had said that someone needs to "gut her", we could all laugh, move the fuck on, and pay attention to the actual games again.

Hell, if Ryan said something like this about Jason, nobody would bat an eyelash.

Collarbone:

We all (I hope) know that he broke his kid's collarbone diving for a ball out of bounds. David pointed out correctly that rsn's comments are pretty stupid concerning that. But what's even more stupid?

Yep, that's right, the kid gets hurt and she STILL brings him to the games. Front row, potentially in harm's way. Would it KILL her to get a seat up in a luxury box, or even, GASP, a few rows back? This is just an act of protecting your child, not rocket science. Hell, get her some seats behind the announce crew. That way, the kid is protected and if she yells loud enough, the mic might even pick it up! ATTENTION!

Man, I'd like to gut that bitch.

How could you possibly know for SURE what his intentions were? Were you residing inside his head when he uttered the words?

Yes!

The best part is, anyone can read that sentence with or without the sarcasm and apply it to their own position.

And HEY, he's a sports writer. He was exaggerating a point- it's not like he was starting a "$10,000 Slap Joumana Challenge."

Then he should have said Kidd's wife is an annoying media whore and be done with it...even joking at violence (no matter what he intended) would get a rookie Sportstalk host fired, and that's what should have happened here.

Where in the name of Schaap do you get the idea that "gut her" would be any better?

Jason wasn't the previously physically abused wife. Apples and oranges.

Ryan is a stupid idiot who deserves to be taken off the airwaves. Go back to your poison pen where you can hide from your negative feedback, Ryan.

My point of "gut her" was that then, the comment would be so *blatantly* ludicrous that people who feel the need to get offended by dumb things (like I did when reading this thread) could just blow past it and stop losing sleep over it.

Jason wasn't the previously physically abused wife.

That's a fun line.

Ryan is a stupid idiot who deserves to be taken off the airwaves.

But the thing is, Bob Ryan is not a stupid idiot. A mistake does not an idiot make. It makes him human. He's earned years of respect in his writing and TV appearances, now all of the sudden he says one thing and he's a stupid idiot? Come on.

Of course, this would have been a better story if he had paraphrased Chris Rock in his apology and said "I'm not saying Jason should have slapped her... but I understand."

I love the people calling for Ryan to be fired but its fine for Kidd to still be playing basketball. I think the Boston Globe went alittle overboard with the month suspension (I think 2 weeks would have been better) But they should have waited 1 day so Ryan could write about it instead haveing to drag all of this up again next month.

If Ryan retracted his statement, especially after Lobel gave him 2 chances to do so, he might have gotten away with a week's suspension. When he was completely unapologetic, he screwed himself.

Look at it this way, if a beat reporter with only 5 years on the job instead of Ryan(who has 30 years) had said this, do you think he'd still have a job?

Yes and there would be no one outside of Boston and maybe New York who would be talking about this. One of the reason this story is so big is because it was Bob Ryan who said it. If Ryan retracted his statement when Lobel gave him the chance it would have been a non-story at all. All he needed to say to Lobel was "Sorry my mouth was going faster than my brain of course I dont want to slap her" and it would have been a joke on the radio for a week and then it would have been gone. No suspension, No Wienerboard thread.

Personally, I'm still waiting for the NBA to discipline Byron Scott for his racist remarks on WFAN before Game 2 regarding the city of Boston. Change the name to John Rocker and New York City, and their wasn't much difference. But, then again, I'm still awaiting the NBA to discipline Isiah Thomas for his 1987 comments, and for Doc Rivers' comments in his book, so I'm not holding my breath regarding David Stern coming down on Lord Byron.

His comments of "I just think that some cities and organizations haven't caught up to the year 2000 yet," is a far cry from John Rocker.

He also called Boston fans abrasive, cruel and hostile. But I'm sure they're going to prove him wrong tonight, right?

Boston fans can be abrasive, cruel and hostile. But, It's not like this is the only city where that happens. They probably will be like that tonight, but his comments just fueled the fire. Is Boston the only place where fans are "Juiced up" going into a game? I don't think so. I seem to remember a sign in the crowd of a game last year in New Jersey where someone help up a sign that said "Will someone please stab Paul Pierce". Is this acceptable? I don't remember anyone saying that all New Jersey fans were cruel. It's just a couple of idiots.

My point is, there are plenty of asshole fans in each city. Byron shouldn't generalize that ALL Boston are fans as bad. I am a Boston fan, and I am not abrasive, cruel or hostile.

On another note, If Bob Ryan had been fired, there probably would have been a full apology on page one of the Boston Herald, written by him. (Though I agree what he said was wrong)

Edit: removed an extra "what" from the last line.

I think there is alot of sh!t said about Boston fans that is just ridiculous. It's unfortunate that racism is still in existence, every team has some racist fans. I hate people who are racist.

To make a generalization about fans of any town based on a few idiots is ludicrous. Most fans of the Celtics are energetic and loud, But because Byron Scott only listens for the few morons he envisions it as some rowdy klan rally. It's as stupid as thinking White Sox fans are all "Thugs".

Byron Scott is a dumbass! Should all fans sit on their hands and not scream, cheer or yell? Hell no. Fan stems from the word fanatic, I would hate to be at a Basketball game where the fans react the way Byron seems to want them to, only with Golf claps after every basket by each team.
