| #1 Posted on 3.5.03 1654.27 Reposted on: 3.5.10 1657.03 | I remember watching the Michaels/Jericho match at WM. There were 54,097 other people there watching with me. But during that match, everybody else dissapeared. It was....magical. It really was. I was so fixated on that match, that nothing and I mean absolutely nothing could have taken any bit of my attention away from it.
But what was I really watching? I was watching two grown men throw each other around. And pretending to beat the crap out of each other. It was all staged. And I loved every second of it.
What is it about Wrestling that drags all of us in? Why do we watch such a strange thing. It seems so strange that something like that could be successful. I'm sure you've all had moments like I had. And I just wanted to throw out some kind thank you, or appreciative type of post into the cesspool of negativity that is the IWC. But anyway, anybody got anything to add onto my thoughts? The fact that you know the Michaels character so well... and you know the Jericho character so well... and you know that one really is related to the other... and you probably furthermore know that the real person Chris Irvine actually was inspired by Shawn the real person Hickenbottom, making the fiction that he resents it all the more effective.
The fact that it's expressed in terms of hand-to-hand fighting, an ancient "means of interaction" that we don't get to express anymore, probably helps it resonate a bit more.
But basically, I think it's the characters and the stories. | dMp

Ofcourse athleticism come into play. And the ability to make it look real enough to make use forget it is staged and just drag us along on an emotional ride. A boxing match could never excite me the same way a wrestling match can. Even if the boxers have as much background as the wrestlers have..
You know what is interesting? There is no way you can explain to a non-fan what it is that makes you watch. At least I cannot do it.

I (for SOME reason) liked Doink the Clown. Hey, I'll admit it, I have no pride, I probably even liked more of the 'wrestlecrap' that anyone else would ever care to admit.
I was hooked on Days of Our Lives thanks to my grandmother and RAW/wrestling was a far better show then Days ever could be cause of the over the top characters and violence. | Big Bad

That's what I'm trying to say, when I step back and look at it from a non fan's perspective, the whole thing seems, pretty stupid. You can't explain it to them, no matter how much you know they would like it. | Ringmistress

Things like that can't be explained, it's just experienced. You really can't expect a non fan to understand unless he/she witnesses it firsthand.
