------Among the approximately twenty who showed was Nancy Capps. "I'm a chick from Dixie and she doesn't speak for me," Capps said of Maines. Capps was joined by her nine-year-old son, Steven, and twelve-year-old daughter, Becky, who both held up signs outside the arena: "They're being raised to be patriots, and they're being raised to understand that the First Amendment does not excuse a person from facing the consequences."--------

What the ****? "they're being raised to be patriots" ? Does this woman hear herself? She's attempting to instill (indoctrinate? It's a thin line) a sense of pride in her children for their country by railing against free speech? The irony is just too much......:D

Why is it okay to limit the free speech rights of the Capps?

Who's limiting the Capps' free speech, or even suggesting that it should be? All I saw was pointing out the irony of using your 1st Ammendment rights to effectively campaign against them.

Not quite. What's beig insinuiated is that the Capps' should not have the right to free speech that the Dixie Chicks should have. The Dixie Chicks remind me a lot of my sig quote anyway...

Let me clear something up here....I'm not trying to insinuate that this woman shouldn't be allowed to say what she said, I'm merely saying that she's a moron. =D

"they're being raised to be patriots"-that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. If you need to force your kids to protest against "traitors" (a rapidly expanding phrase in it's own right, alarmingly) in order to instill a sense of pride in one's country, then you know your country has problems. I'm sorry, but it needs to be said.

The Dixie Chicks thing will have to be the most overblown story in 2003 when all is said and done. Here's the main thing you should look at, there were 20 protestors. Just twenty. Heck, you could probably organize a protest to the sun rising every morning and draw 20 people. So you have twenty protestors on the outside. You have more pro-Dixie Chicks protestors than that, you have more media than that, you have more police than that, and you have 15,000 fans on the inside enjoying the concert. So why is this a big deal? I'm beginning to think this was just a brilliant plan by the Dixie Chicks to create themselves publicity, using right-wing radio as their suckers to promote them.

I'm a right-winger who doesn't think what the Dixie Chicks said was that big of a deal. If others do, more power to them. But I believe that most of these so called boycotters do not actually own a Dixie Chicks album. If that's the case, I've been boycotting the Dixie Chicks my whole life! I'm the most patriotic of them all!!!

But to analyze the Capps statement, I don't think she is speaking against free speech. She is just saying that when you say something, others have the right to react through their own freedom of speech and expression. While I think that any protests or boycotts over the Dixie Chicks is stupid, because I don't believe what they said was that big of a deal, I also don't think that the Dixie Chick's free speech rights are being violated by these actions. It's simply others excersing their own rights.

In the same way that the DCs in general are morons. They have a problem getting a negative reaction over their speech. "Oh, we should be able to express our opinions" AWARulz agrees. But you have to pay for every transaction. The DCs have to pay, the Capps have to pay. The cost is determined by the society and those magic laws of supply and demand.

AWArulz, agreed. I too was a little put off by the cry-a-thon they held on ABC or whatever the fuck station they went on and just basically tried to cry their way out of the hole they dug for themselves. If you're going to take a stand, then fine, I respect them for that, but to immeditaley retract it and proceed to cry your ass off on national TV in order to elicit sympathy is stupid.

She doesn't exactly sound like the sharpest knife in the drawer anyhow, so I can't be too surprised after all.

They'd be a hell of a lot more newsworthy IMO, too.
