According to ESPN, Shayne Corson has decided to quit the Toronto Maple Leafs. They didn't go into any detail quite yet, but I'm curious as to what a player's motivation is for leaving a team when you're up in your series 2-1....

He was scratched a lot in early february and he was scratched in Game 3. From what I've heard he fealt he was going to blow up and be a huge distraction to the team, so he just quit.

Bob Mckenzie at tsn.ca has an article up about it: http://tsn.ca/columnists/bob_mckenzie.asp

Corson suffers quite badly from Colitis, and apparently it's been acting up again due to stress from not playing, so he removed himself from the situation for his health, and also so not to be a distraction. He has been taking a bit of hell for it, but it's probably the best option all around.

Normally if a veteran leader like Corson did something like this I'd be against it, but in the case of the Leafs, there are plenty of veteran leaders in the locker room. Corson knows himself well enough to know he can't handle riding the pine and he knows the team well enough to know they're not hurting for leadership, but they also don't need distractions.

In this case I think it was a class move.

not to mention that in TO he is anything but a leader. All reports say he's pretty well not liked by just about th whl tm.

The classy thing to do would have been to shut up and smile for the remainder of the Maple Leafs playoff run and then address this in the off-season. With the team in the middle of a tough series, the last thing they need (especially while playing in Toronto) are more off-ice distractions.

If Corson really cared about the welfare of the team as much as he professes, he would have sat in the press box, watched the games and cheered them on.

This was a classless, selfish move.

I Don't know if this is true but I thought you might want to know the
latest rumours

Well don't hate me for releasing this information, but I figured I would
let you guys know what I heard. Apparently news of Corson's resignation
has surfaced some rumors to the reasoning behind it. If everyone will
remember Mogilny left the team a few weeks back citing familly problems,
to which a reason was never given. A Toronto Police officer has said that
during this stint he was called to a domestic at Mogilny's home in Toronto.
The rumours are that Mr. Corson had been laying pipe to Mogilny's wife
while the team was off on the road trips, and he was nursing whatever
problems he managed to have over that week. After all this was found out
by team members, Corson's presence with the team was not welcome, hence the
resigantion. Don't shoot the messenger, I got this info from another
copper in Toronto. Take it for what it's worth.

I'm sure that went over well with Darcy Tucker, whose sister I believe is married to Corson.

But then again, this is just a rumour. And Mogilny did play awfully well in the playoffs for a guy that just found out his wife was screwing around on him.

I heard that rumour on the radio this morning. It sounds too much like the story from about 12-13 years ago when Gary Leeman was allegedly doing the same with Al Iafrate's wife. I'm sure the story will spread like wildfire in this town until it can either be confirmed or denied.

But wife-stealing or not, it is true that the Leafs don't like each other.

Whoa! That explains some things.

I made a comment earlier in this thread about Corson showing class by resigning. I still think it was the best thing he could have done in the situation, but I'm starting to see that it probably had very little to do with class.

He's obviously a locker-room politician, which makes sense given that he's been around so long and played under the even-more-powerful-media-microscope-than-Toronto in Montreal for so many years.

Complaining about other guys' ice time out loud in the locker room should be a hanging offense.

As for the team parties, if you don't like the guys you play with and you just finished fucking the dog in the playoffs with them, I can understand not wanting to "hang out." I think they should have done it anyway, but that's my personal philosophy talking there.

Here's a link to a Fan590 (Toronto all-sports radio station) interview with Corson. It is about 15 minutes long.
