I saw James Brown Live in a smoky little club in Denver back in 1985 - no more than 200 people - he sang "Living in America" 3 1/2 times and threw off the cape 13 times - awesome..... | Scott Summets

I also think Billy Joel's Live from Russia album was very good and historically significant.

There are also some unbelievable bootlegs out there of concerts by Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, and Elvis Costello, but I think only Dylan has had a "proper" live album release.

I am glad to see that it only took two replies to get this one out, and good to see Nirvana Unplugged and Budakon. I was always a fan of "The Youth Are Getting Restless" by Bad Brains, who are awesome live. Also note "Live at Leeds" (Who) and um..."Boingo Alive"... | BionicRedNeck2k3

Ah, but do you have the DVD? THAT is truly awesome and it gives you a real good idea of what they're like live. I've seen them 5 times (6 after April 26th in San Francisco) and the Everything, Everything DVD brings back good memories every time I watch it.

Two other awesome live albums which are awesome are One For The Road by The Kinks and Sam Cooke Live At The Harlem Square Club, 1963.
Tarnish, I do believe that Elvis Costello's Live At The El Mocambo was given a full legit release by Ryko a few years ago, so that's a good start although as you say there are plenty of great boots of him live as well. Also, the Who's Live at the Isle of Wight Festival is great to listen to when you are trying to figure out how to tell people they no longer have a job, but I no longer have to deal with the shit anymore.
Edit: Fuck, can't believe I forgot Spiritualized Live at the Royal Albert Hall CD, great fucking live set from one of the best groups ever.

| #35 Posted on 13.4.03 1659.11 Reposted on: 13.4.10 1703.17 | I'd have to go with Hypocrisy's "Destroys Wacken". It was recorded in '98 at the Wacken open air festival over in Holland, and it has all of their best tunes. Another great thing about it is that their vocalist/lead guitarist Peter Tgtgren is one hell of a producer (possibly the best in the death/black metal field), and this live album sounds relatively clear. Plus, there's four studio tracks at the end, one of which is quite excellent in itself.
Whew, hooray for being long-winded. Some other favorites are Nirvana's "MTV Unplugged", Led Zeppelin's "The Song Remains the Same", and John Coltrane's "Live in Seattle" (for obvious reasons). | Freeway

| #37 Posted on 13.4.03 2216.01 Reposted on: 13.4.10 2217.16 | Nirvana's Unplugged is tremendous, but my fav is Neil Young's. The first half of the album is just Neil, his acoustic guitar, and his harmonica. It's beautiful. Neil Young is god.
When I was 14, Rush's A Show of Hands was on my turntable at least four times a week. Oooooh I think I'll reach over and pop the CD on right now ... aaahhhh that's the stuff. It just gets better and better as the years pass. I'll still be listening to it when I'm sucking back the prune juice and complaining about kids these days.
The Tragically Hip's Live Between Us captures the essence of a Hip show perfectly. The live version of "Scared" gives me goosebumps, no matter how many times I've heard it.

It was supposed to be just for record company execs etc and has never had widespread commercial release (I found it in a used record store a few years ago). It shows Stevie at the height of his powers before the heroin problems kicked in and absolutely blows away the Live Alive album which was widely released.
I miss Stevie...
