Wrong! When we disagree with people on the left, or any other radical group, we're told "Hey! They have a right to express their views/opinions/etc..."

example: Klansmen being allowed to hold protests and marches.

But...flying the American flag? In America? Whoo-boy! You better watch them strange ideas boy!

Huh. Weird. But I hardly think this is the norm. Don't worry, conservatives, your small-town mindsets are still firmly entrenched in 99% of the country. The PC police aren't winning, no matter how many isolated incidents of wackiness Grimmis posts.

How is patriotism and flying the flag of the US constitue as a "small-town midnset", I suppose as opposed to the "big-city" America is evil mindset.

And I would love a definition of how a "small town" mindset is so damned evil? For someone coming from a line of thought that is supposed to be "tolorant of all ideas," that was damned sure one seriously elitist comment.

And having never actually lived in a small town myself, I don't quite understand how any of my thoughts could be considered a "small town-mindset."

Damn- I'll say it again, the elitism of the PC liberal left astounds me- Flying the American flag and showing pride and support towards our troops is Politically Incorrect, and if you question this notion, you are a small-town bumpkin with no sophistication. Really calls into question the whole liberal notion of "Class equality" and free-exchange of ideas.

Opposing children flying American flags is just the kind of stance that results in those "anti-American" charges you hate so much. You can support the most hateful and annoying forms of anti-american protest, but a CHILD wanting to show a little bit of support for those fighting for his country by flying an American flag is considered by you to be way out of line. When your philosophy gets to the point where you oppose even this simple form of patriotism, that has nothing to do with your partisan stances, you have crossed the line to "Un-American." One does have to question why you are here if you cannot even appreciate this simple gesture. The flag is suppost to represent all that is good about America- including the free speech you claim to hold so dear- and to oppose it in favor of the most slanderous of anti-war protest signs is sad indeed...

Well, back to the original story here's my thoughts:

1) It wasn't their dorm room or anything, it was the entrance of the main building on campus. The college has every right to dictate what they're going to allow people to put up there.

2) They wanted to put up TWO DOZEN flags. I don't think I've ever walking into a building and thought, "This is nice. But you know what it needs? Two dozen American flags." That would've just looked downright ugly.

3) The VP of Administration is looking bad, but he could've looked a lot worse. And he has a point. Just think of this: These students put up two dozen American flags. Another student or group of students (anti war? Arab? just looking to start something?) puts up an Iraqi flag. Or two dozen of them. Can you imagine how much worse the situation could get after that? Better just to stop the whole thing now. Let them put flags in their homes/dorms, and keep the public spaces clean.

And, uh... Pool-Boy? Since when are college students children??

lol - got carried away I suppose- read "College student" and I totally skipped over "college."

That is what I get for reading this stuff while I am pretending to work at the same time...

The point remains- replace children with "Idealistic youth," or something equitable.... sorry :)

When I say that, what I really mean is flag waving, rah-rah bullshit.

And Pool-Boy, I didn't say a small town mindset was necessarily evil. Ignorant is a better term.

But getting to the spirit of the OP, I don't care if people fly flags, or participate in "patriotic" rallys orchestrated by Clear Channel Radio, who has ties to Bush. That's all fine and dandy.

My point is that these little PC infractions are by no means the rule across the country. You can still wave your flag proudly from your car, buy your wife a patriotic denim vest, wear lapel pins, whatever. You're all setting up straw men to get worked up over.

I'm totally with Jaguar on this... if you want to fly a flag, do so in your own home or out in front of it. The idea of a few college students wanting to fly two dozen flags in front of a main campus building is completely insane. I'd write more, but I've repeated Jaguars point enough already...

It's weird that it is now considered "anti-establishment" to put up flags and support your country.

See, no. No, it's not. No one is saying that. Yes, some people in this thread are implying that. But maybe a college administrator just didn't want a door plastered with TWO DOZEN FUCKING FLAGS. Go back and read Jaguar's post, he lays it out in nice and easy terms, so that you all can understand.

NO ONE IS SAYING THAT YOU CAN'T FLY THE FUCKING FLAG. NO ONE.

Don't try and obscure the rhetoric with reality. That just confuses people.
