i'll be heading to seattle this saturday from vancouver, BC for fan axxess and wrestlemania on sunday. i was fully planning on wearing my nice Canada olympic hockey jersey, but i'm getting some mixed messages from some friends here on how that would be received right now, considering we're not out on the front lines in iraq.

i'm ignoring the typical canadian stereotypes of americans such as "i wouldn't do that in public, they've got guns". that's just stupid. but i'm curious to know if some of you think wearing a big canadian hockey jersey on my chest is equivalent in any way to waving the french flag. god i hope not.

Honestly, I'd think we'd laugh because we'd kick your ass in every other team sport there is, including Soccer, which is much more popular up there than here :)

I wouldn't worry too much about getting anything more than a "Ha ha, he's Canadian!" type glare from somebody.

This is Seattle, after all... not exactly the home of hard-line overzealous patriotism.

If you were off to Jackson, MS I'd be worried. But it is Seattle

Don't you guys watch South Park? Canadians have heads that look and pop up like waste baskets...except Chris Benoit, he's an amazing physical specimen.

Wear the jersey. Anyone who'd say anything about it is sufficiently ignorant that you should be able to laugh off anything they say.

Most Americans aren't THAT petty, anyway. We don't get that upset when someone wears a shirt with a logo we don't approve of (well, except in certain shopping malls in New York).

Considering most Americans consider Canada the 51st state, I doubt you'd deal with any problems. Especially considering you'll be in an area near Canada.

Apparantly, everyone that ISN'T Montreal is cheering the American anthem when it plays before hockey games. Damn Frenchies...

Any-hoo, Alberta Premier Ralph Klein (i.e., the man who made Alberta the most financially viable province in the country) supports the war. I'm not sure if the B.C. premier does or not. But provinces with smarts support America, because otherwise...we won't get trade.

Most of the world doesn't support the war in Iraq, and that includes about half of the Americans. For whatever reason, all the scorn for this is directed at France and France alone. (I think it has something to do with France being full of French people.)

My point? About half the people here agree with Canada, and the other half don't care.

thanks for all the replies. nothing like a canadian tv station "getting the word on the streets" from seattle, more likely just to stir up the pot a bit back home and call it "news". *sigh*

i can imagine the questions...
reporter to american: have you heard that canada doesn't back the US in the war on iraq? and also that they kick puppies when nobody is looking?

response: well everyone is entitled to their opinion on the war. but as for the puppies, that's disgusting, i can't believe it! what jerks!

what actually makes it onto tv:
reporter: have you heard that canada doesn't back the US in the war on iraq?
response: that's disgusting, i can't believe it! what jerks!

oh and for what it's worth, i was at the canucks/phoenix game last night in vancouver, and the US anthem was heartily cheered. and sang by the home crowd. now *that* was something.

I go to Buffalo all the time for hockey and football games and regularly wear my Team Canada hockey jersey. My observation has been that the Americans there couldn't care less. In fact, that jersey has started some great conversations between myself and some of the fine residents of upstate New York.

Anyways, you're worrying too much. Nobody gives a rip about Canada other than Canadians.

God! You just don't give up on this do you? Define most...25%? 15%?

Is about half 33%?

You know...have your opinion...that's great. Conflict breeds diversity breeds culture, etc...but don't just make stuff up.

As for the original point of this thread, go ahead and wear the jersey. The average fan will associate it with Chris Jericho instead of Canada...go figure.

As for those who do associate it with Canada, I for one would be fine with it. Even most (there's that word) of us war mongers don't have such pointy heads that we can't tolerate a hockey jersey.

edit: Math I'm good with...spelling though?
