Announcer for Atlanta Braves games over the radio, I believe.

He made a one-time NWA TNA appearance several weeks ago, including a semi-shoot argument with Mike Tenay. Afterwards, he was very upset, and never returned to the promotion.

It's too bad he didn't come back. Fat Evil Tony was actually pretty interesting.

You can catch him all this week on Family Feud on the Game Show Channel though. They're replaying the WCW vs. GLOW week. I believe there should be an episode tomorrow at 2:30pm PT/5:30pm ET

I've gotta say, Tony landed on his feet. Broadcasting baseball is much more respectable than calling wrestling.

They said on TNA that Tony was offerend a regular spot with TNA as part of the SEX group. He turned them down saying at this time he doesn't want to do it. I e-mailed Mike Tenay off the TNA website and asked if he would be back cause as a heel he rules. Tenay said the same thing everyone says when they don't know the anwser "Time will tell."

“Where is Tony?”

Even as The Wienerboard's resident WCW mark, I have to reply, “Who cares?”

Hmmm.... no one seems to have heard about him much after Bischoff made that comment about him on RAW a while ago to Jim Ross. And whenever anyone asks J.R. whether Schiavone has `disappeared' he laughs nervously and leaves the room...

E tu, Eke?

I for one do not understand all the Schiavone hating among the internet smarks. The guy could call one damn exciting match, he was *the* voice for the NWA and WCW, he called some of the greatest matches in wrestling history. Does the guy worship Satan or something? Why does it seem like everyone hates him or doesn't care about him? I personally thought he was entertaining and his voice always took me back to the old days.

At one point in time, he was on of my favorite announcers, but after WCW started to go down hill, he did too. It was like you could tell that he wanted to be ANYWHERE else but at the announce position. Even with J.R., at least he can bring himself to sound excited once in a while.

And he got annoying and cliche, and he laughed on air about how stupid the product was (and not laughing WITH you like Cole and Tazz did, but laughing AT you as if to ask "Why are you still watching this shit?"). And, of course, there are alot of people (including Bobby Heenan, whose opinions I fr the most part trust), who have said that he was a smarmy asshole backstage.

But should smarky criticisms and what kind of person the guy was backstage diminish what he was able to bring to the average fan? It just seems that everyone here thinks he was *100% horrible*, EVEN THE RESIDENT WCW MARK, and I'm trying to understand why no one can be more objective about him. Just like Barry Bonds, if the guy is a jerk at least appreciate what he does, or at least DID at one time.

I don't recall Schiavone mattering at all in the NWA. After they bought UWF, Ross was always the voice of NWA to me. And NWA/WCW Jim Ross smokes Tony Schiavone like a cheap cigar.

I don't blame Tony. The company was going down the drain and no one in charge really cared. That is a tough position to be in. You cannot tell me that your work thic wouldn't slip if even your superiors didn't care about the product and even did more to accelerate it's decline. I can imagine his feelings seeing a company grow, then hit the skids in a very short span of time. In have been in that situation and my work output became crap as well.

I have to agree with you, there. I never saw anything wrong with Tony. Yes, he was a horrible announcer in the end. But even the most talented of announcers can only do so much to make a company so bad look good.

If you watch a tape of WCW in 1996, Tony doesn't seem half as bad as he did come 1998, did he? It's not a conincidence.

Just like it's not a coincidence that JR was awesome in 2000, but seems to be going downhill today. There's only so much an announcer can do.

Ah. I didn't like the whiny, bitchy sound of his voice. And I didn't like the "biggest night in the history of our sport" catchphrase he had going. And once he called Bobby Heenan a "Bobo" on Nitro. A bobo. I'm not six, and I wasn't then.

And wasn't it Schiavone who called Chuck Palumbo (former WCW Champion, by the way) Palumby? Plus, "He will not be denied!" got really repetitive after a while.

I thought Tony was outstanding. I think he's way better than JR or anyone else, imho. I loved the whole "greatest **** in the history of our sport!" schtick. I loved the schtick where he say at the end, "We're outta time! We gotta go!" and fade out as all hell was breaking loose. Great cliffhanger - perfect for wrestling. Made you wanna tune in next time.

The most common gripe about him was that he didn't know all the moves. People preferred Tenay because he knew moves. Once that stigma started amongst internet wrestling fans, the complaints spread to his weight, and to everything else about the man.

To me, that is NOT how to hire for that spot. Tony's got talent -for making things exciting-. Tenay doesn't. Even JR pales in comparision. I'm not surprised the Braves hired him. Just another talent that got away to do bigger things.

The 3-man booth was a great idea by WCW. Tony's job was to hype and make things exciting. He and Heenan gave you one face and one heel and their goal was to make it seem fun. Then Tenay was the third guy in the background to fill in occassional techincal information whenever it was needed. You don't want the techincal guy in the primary announcing position because that positon is your LIASON to your audience.
