Can anybody here tell me how to set up an FTP server on my home computer? I need to do this to send some files to somebody. I'm on Verizon DSL, if it matters. Any tips or help would be greatly appreciated.

Give many more details.

For example: Macintosh or PC? Which OS are you using? What are you looking to do - swap a few files over once, or set this up for a continuing deal...

If you are only looking to do a one time deal, and you have PC, and you have a pretty decent connection to the other person, then go to download.com and grab a limited demo version of any of the FTP servers out there and zip all the files into one file on your HD so that you won't go over the 4 file limit or whatever.

Of course, that's assuming you aren't using an OS with IIS.

i've been thinking of setting up a server on my DSL. I'd like to setup a web server and host my own page.

I've downloaded Apache, but i haven't played with it yet.
I'm running Win ME. Is it really that hard to do? I just wish I had more free time to really give it a go...I'd appreicate any advice, either here or Private messages...

Riki, don't waste your time. WinME is the wrong platform to run any kind of server on, and if you're expecting any kind of hits to your web server, your DSL will S-L-O-W T-O A C-R-A-W-L. If you're really serious, set up a Linux box and get a T1 or T3.

...and while you're at it, use gold ingots for paperweights!

Gosh! How much d'you think a T1 actually costs? I'm gonna go waaaaaaaaaay out on a limb and say "more in a month than rdz would want to spend IN A YEAR."

CRZ [Guru, and Lou, too]

If ME is bad [and i don't want to invest in a mac, no $$$ to setup another system] should I get XP or Linux?

Also, unless my memory is totally like swiss cheese, i thought slash was being hosted in-house...if so, without revealing too much to the inner workings of the site, how was it set-up

and thanks in advance for any suggestions/advice, one of my room mates wants to host her own web page and sell like jars of pre-measured cookie dough ingredients...on some peoples sites, they sell for $12 a jar...

and, no, i would not want to spend $$$ on a T1...

and a final note, i'm pretty proficient in C, C++, Java, SQL, and PL/SQL, so how hard would it be to dive right into Linux? it's written in C, right? [just like Unix was, right?]

My website is running on a Sparc 5 running Solaris (Apache). THIS site is on a Pentium with Linux (Guru can give specifics on that, I can't - sorry) and I think it's got some form of Apache behind it as well...and PHP generates the pages through the magic of the boardware.

Both boxes are colo'd in data centres owned by my employer...CRZ.net is in Santa Clara, Wienerville is in San Jose. Conceivably, the only limitation on bandwidth is the 100M connection into the boxes, since we're on a gigE path - although I wouldn't want to attract too much attention by testing the limits there.

My home DSL ain't much good for hosting, although it works great for me to surf and be on AIM without using a phone ;-)

The above is true.

HOWEVER.

I ~was~ running an earlier version of this board software off of my home cable modem line for over 6 months. We never noticed the hit to our bandwidth.

I have around 25 users on that board who post pretty regularly. It wasn't the volume of Weinerville by any means, but I did serve over 200k pages off of that connection with no problems.

Your mileage may vary. I have a friend in Calgary who has very good luck with a 768k upload DSL line - and hosts 30 or so people off of his server there - including some very popular sites.

This is true...on my old ADSL line, the upload was only at like 128k (I THINK), so that would be ridiculously insufficient. Where I am, Verizon has 3 speeds of DSL, and that was the lowest. I think the highest was around $150-200 a month. As far as what OS to use, definitely Linux, if you can figure it out (Which I cannot). Windows is not a good platform for servers, basically because there are too many security holes, and it's bloated. You can set a Linux server to run your HTTP server, and not much else. Windows runs all its GUI shit, screensavers, sound card crap, etc, etc, and it just basically slows you down. I cannot speak for the viability of the Mac platform for servers, because I do not use it. Having been brainwashed by Bill Gates for years, however, I feel I must say that Macs suck for everything and anything.

And CRZ, I said he should get a T1 if he's REALLY serious. How much do those things cost now, anyways?
