Expletive Scrawled on Ball O'Neal Used for 20,000th
Mar 22, 12:27 AM (ET)

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Lakers' Shaquille O'Neal left Sacramento with a spoiled souvenir of his 20,000th career point - someone scribbled an insulting expletive on the ball used when he reached the milestone.
The unknown culprit apparently got to that game ball sometime after Lakers public relations director John Black had grabbed it just before halftime of the rival Kings' 107-99 victory over Los Angeles on Thursday night.

O'Neal, booed by the Sacramento crowd at halftime when his accomplishment was announced, said he hoped no one connected with the Kings' organization was responsible.

"History was made last night. You can't take that away from me," said O'Neal, the 28th player in NBA history to reach the plateau. "I hope the Maloof family (Kings' owners Gavin and Joe Maloof) doesn't condone this kind of action.

"I will not hold the city of Sacramento responsible, but whoever did this shows no class. I'm not mad at all. I know the Maloofs allow a lot of stuff. If they do condone this, I'll be very disappointed in that organization."

At least for O'Neal, the vandalism added fuel to what already is a heated rivalry between the Pacific Division foes.

"This is one thing I won't forget, and I'll see you soon," O'Neal said.

The Kings are at the Lakers on April 10.

Black said the Lakers sent the ball back to the Kings.

He's the 28TH player to score 20,000, but he believes "history was made last night?"

Please...I hate this guy more and more...

Of course, history is actually made EVERY DAY, but I doubt that was Shaq's point.

I agree completely...the more this man opens his mouth, the more I don't like him.

That makes you hate him (more)? Him saying that? Sounds just like what I would've said if it had been me. Like him or not, 28th player to do it or not, what he did was a big accomplishment. Somebody somewhere didnt like him or what he did and they tried to "ruin" it for him. I would've reacted in the exact same way.

Oh, no doubt, Frosty, that's it's a big deal for him. I'm not trying to take anything away from the accomplishment, seeing as I have a total of 0 NBA points myself. And I'm not trying to take away from whatever the Sacramento fan did to the ball, because, you're right, I'm sure all of us would have reacted pretty much the same.

Just don't give me this self-aggrandizing "history was made last night" crap, Shaq. Please. Get over yourself. I don't recall Stockton going on like that when he set both the career assists and steals records...that was more my point.

Yup. Classy with a capital "K". Whatever happened to "revenge on the court"? Wasn't the Kings' victory enough? Or are the Kings fans just anticipating the 4th Lakers championship now and getting out their frustrations 3 months in advance?

Not so much that, as it is a major accomplishment, but it's more of a general statement.

Wait a minute.

Do you mean, "If Shaq or Kobe were just another average, 'blend in with everyone else' member of the Grizzlies, no one would give a f*ck about them", or "If Shaq and Kobe still had all the same skills they posess now, but were on the Grizzlies, no one would give a f*ck about them"?

Either way, that's just crazy. Come to think of it, where did that comment come from anyway? None of that even has anything to do with that's being talked about in this thread. Now I'm gonna have to break out my old sig, just for you.

Justice to me would be a Lakers/Wizards Finals where MJ goes of for 50 a night and the Wiz sweep the Lakers....

....back here in reality, I just want the Lakers to go away....please.

I dont normally explain dripping sarcasm, but since tonight's RAW is from Sacramento . . . . . . . . . . . . Shaq made a similar comment about Bibby, which in all likelihood, precipitated the ball vandalism.

Eh... if Shaq and Kobe were both members of the Grizzlies, nobody would give a shit about the Lakers, because Memphis would be winning championships year after year after year.

I'm not a fan of the Lakers, and I'd like to see them lose... preferably to the Pacers in the Finals... but I'm not going to deny that Shaq and Kobe are massively talented. And I have to believe that if they were on any other team (with the possible exception of the Clippers, because of their shit management) they'd still be at the very least contending for the playoffs and possibly the title every year.

... All of this: Crap. Meaningless.

Shaq did something pretty special. Kings' fans don't like Shaq and tried to ruin the moment. Shaq was pissed and reacted accordingly.

Feh.

Wake me up when the Playoffs start.

Being a Laker fan I'm a little biased. I'll admit Shaq does occasionally say something really stupid (don't we all at some point in our lives, we just don't have a microphone sticking in our faces). But, he says it and doesn't back down from it. I rescpect that. Whether history was actually made or not, it was obviously a milestone in his career. For some to do something like that, was just cowardly! If you're going to call him an asshole, or whatever he called him, be enough of a man to do it to his face. It only solidified the whole "Sacremento Queens" remark. Besides if anyone knows anything after watching Shaq all these years, he turns slights like that into a positive. all it will do now is give hime the motivation that he has seemed to be lacking this year.
