| #4 Posted on 16.3.03 1817.46 Reposted on: 16.3.10 1817.58 | Okay, to say I have some issues with this field so far is probably an understatement.
First off... Alabama got in? Call me crazy, but from where I come from, going sub-.500 in conference PLUS going, oh, 8-11 over the last 19 games wasn't a great recipe for making the tourney. Yeah, I know that they beat Oklahoma, but that was early in the year.
Secondly, there was no WAY that Texas should've been a #1 seed. Oh well, at least the committee made my picking of the #1 upset special easy this year. Thanks, guys.
I also took small issue with Memphis getting at 7 seed out West; at least they could've put them somewhere a little less... loaded?
Heck, for that matter, Arizona deserved better. Getting all of those teams out West? Not sure who they pissed off for that one. They definately deserved better being one of the "solid" #1's going in.
As for Kentucky - well, they got a bit of a cakewalk, eh? Guess that's what happens when you win 23 in a row. Don't really have much of an issue there.
However, I think the biggest problem I have is Kentucky potentially playing 'Zona in the Final Four ...and that's NOT the championship game! Grr. Me not happy. | Jaguar

1) What the hell? Kentucky and... Pitt? Midwest seems pretty damn weak. So that's where we'll see the most upsets. I'm rooting for the Jags over Kentucky, and a Dayton/Holy Cross Elite Eight. Holy Cross to the final four!
2) Maryland a #6 seed? Mmmmmmm....kay. And paired against UNCW. Fuck you, seeding committee. Go Seahawks!
3) Did you really want a repeat of 1997? I think it would be too embarrassing
4) If we're gonna have one upset #1 seed, why not two? I'm looking forward to UNCA vs UNCW in the Elite Eight.
5) Which means that my happy final four looks to be Arizona over Holy Cross, and Wake Forest over UNCA

- How in the hell does Alabama get in over Tennessee. Really. This just ocmplete boggles my mind considering how poorl they played that last two-thirds of the season. And they were a # 10 so they probably weren't even the last time in the field!
- Pitt and Wake as 2 seeds are jokes, but probably just reactions from Marquette losing in the 1st round of the CUSA tourney and Syracuse not making it to the Big East final.
- How Maryland fell to a 6 is beyond me. Got no favors with Wilmington in the first round, though I expedted the Terps to finally show up and stomp some ass.
- Kentucky doesn't have as easy a road as you think they do. That is still a talented bracket. The toughest region is the west, while the least predicatable is going to be the South.
- Upset Specials: Holy Cross over Marquette, Troy State over Xavier, Weber State over Wisconsin, Butler over Mis State, and Maryland, S.Illinois, and Creighton all wind up in the Sweet 16. | Ffej

-I am suprised Alabama got in too. They certainly have no business being in there and I would have put in Boston College over Tennessee. BC finished the year really strong and played great in the conference tournament. Alabama however started tanking in December and then lost to Vandy in forst round of the SEC tourney! It doesn't make any sense to me.
-I agree. I thought Maryland was at the lowest a 5 seed. I really thought they deserved a 3 or 4 seed.
-The Cats scare me because I really thought they should have lost a game. If they run into an Arizona down the road and play a sloppy first half, as they are prone to do, they won't be able to come back like they did on Miss. St.
-The toughest region by far is the West. For some reason I see the Illini coming out of that region too. Just a gut feeling.
-I think Syracuse is a final Four team. They have the best player in the country in Carmello Anthony and a great young supporting cast. They are my sleeper to make it to the Final Four.
My Final Four: UK Illinois Texas Syracuse

The ESPN announcers were complaining about this yesterday. Then when they gave their picks, none of them picked both Arizona and Kentucky to make it to the final four. So it seems like a useless point. Besides just because Arizona had a good year, doesn't mean they shouldn't have to play anybody good in the tournament.
I can't stand all the complaining by teams that didn't get picked. If you are not one of the top SIXTY-FIVE teams, you really suck.

But the tournament does not take the 65 top teams. It takes the 31 automatic conference qualifiers and the 34 best teams after those 31 are selected.
Regardless, BC, Tennessee, or Seton Hall deserved looks over Alabama.
The best part was the reasoning as to why Kentucky was slotted in the Midwest over the South or the East: Minneapolis is closer to the Lexington campus than San Antonio or Albany. Now, doing a crude estimate of driving distance thanks to maps.yahoo.com, these are the driving distances Lexington to each:
Albany: 816.2 miles Minneapolis: 849.2 miles San Antonio: 1151.1 miles
Regardless of any of that, the flight differential is probably negligible between Albany and Minneapolis. It would have been better for the sake of the bracket for them to be on oppoiste sides. | JWstorm

| #12 Posted on 17.3.03 1129.45 Reposted on: 17.3.10 1132.43 | Yes I agree that Seton Hall, BC and Tennessee deserve to be there ahead of Alabama, but if you really want to pick on a SEC team from the state of Alabama then it should be Auburn. They only finished one game above Alabama in the standings. Which by the way I don't think going 7 - 9 in the SEC is all that bad when you have to play Kentucky, Florida, Georgia, Miss St., Tennessee, Auburn, LSU, heck Ole Miss, Arkansas and Vanderbilt could be NCAA tournament teams if they played in an easier conference. Plus Alabama was playing teams like Oklahoma and Xavier in the nonconference schedule while Auburn was playing Wofford, Western Kentucky and Western Michigan. SO Auburn should be out more than Alabama should. Also Alabama DOES have the talent to be a great team if they played well. Auburn on the other hand has one player who can score, and one player who can play defense.
Tennessee definitely should've been there. THey had to play Kentucky 2 times, Georiga 2 times, Florida 2 times, Alabama, MIss St, and LSU once. For a lot of teams that made the tournament that's 9 automatic losses right there, but Tennesses managed to go 9 - 7. Plus during Louisville's long streak Tennessee was the closest to knocking them off.
I agree with Maryland being low, I would've given them an equal to or higher seed than Duke. I know Duke won the conference tournament but they were still pretty equal during the season to me. Then when you look at the veterans on Maryland and you have to think they will do well, putting them over Duke.
Kansas should be a #1
First round upsets (not necessarily upsets but lower seeds beating higher seeds) Penn over Oklahoma State Troy State over Xavier Alabama over Indiana Weber State over Wisconsin
My Picks Midwest - Missouri West - Kansas (watch out for Memphis in the second round) South - Florida (Okeafor could be a problem in the round of 8 though) East - Syracuse | Grimis

I happen to have that game as my All Big East National title game, but it won't be close. Pitt blew a lead on the road in Syracuse and still almost won, and throttled them at home. Enough of how Pitt is overrated. All of you who say this obviously haven't seen them play more than once this year.
I expect Kentucky vs Pitt in the Elite 8 to be the game of the tourney, if it happens.

| #16 Posted on 17.3.03 1825.44 Reposted on: 17.3.10 1825.46 | A few quick thoughts and then some picks:
The tournament committee should all be fired for incompetence. The BYU fiasco is a joke, and its even worse when the head of the committee is a BYU alum. Throw in the reports out of New York that they screwed up the brackets and were supposed to have Kentucky in the South but fucked it up is inexcuseably. Also, for some reason, I think the Kentucky fans would have preferred the East, as they know how to get to Albany on their way to Saratoga in August. If Holy Cross knocks off Marquette, will Tommy Heinsohn do a dance before Celtics/Lakers on Friday night? And, we need a Bob Cousy sighting at the tourney if the Cross gets to Round 2. If ever a #1 seed could lose, its Texas this season. I saw Opie Barnes try to coach for 6 years at Providence, and I still rank him as one of the 2 or 3 worst bench coaches in America. He can recruit, but he can't coach a close game to save his life. Repeat of 1997? Why, is the team playing Arizona in the Elite Eight going to throw the ball to Corey Wright with a chance to win the game at the end of regulation, and then use Coify fucking Pointer in overtime? I always have fond recollections of charging after Gillen in the PC parking lot the next year when I was working on my Masters, still pissed off about that.
Final Four Picks.

Hmmm, four regions times three seeds equals twelve teams. If the Illini are in the top twelve, that would make them at least a three seed, right? And considering they have won four in a row, and won their conference tournament, they might even be a 2?
Wait, a 4 seed? Not even in the Midwest? What the hell was the committee watching? Do the Sunday games even count?Sorry, vent over. I guess they were too busy figuring out when to schedule BYU. That is a situation that will screw everyone's brackets if it gets that far.

| #19 Posted on 18.3.03 2114.35 Reposted on: 18.3.10 2115.21 | I don't think the question is which 12 beats a 5 ...
...it's which 5 manages to win their game.
Honestly, I don't see most of the 12's winning as upsets; they're just underrated mid-majors. Weber State, anyone? Butler? Not who I'd put as a 12. Right now, I'm going to say that Notre Dame will be the only team to win their game. To those who point to UConn, I give you two reasons why they won't win: 1) They're traveling to Spokane - a virtual cross-country trip for them, playing an 11:40 tip-off on Thursday. Not likely they'll have too many faithful that make the trip. In addition, BYU is a heck of a lot closer to Spokane than Conn. is.
2) Murphy's Law. You just know that after the committee screwed this one up, BYU's making it to the Sweet 16.
Also, and this is gonna sound odd (considering I go to Tennessee), but I see why UT wasn't picked over 'Bama, and it's very simple; Bama beat UT when they played, at Tennessee. Although in my mind, the Vols are prob'ly the better team, it's because of that win that the committee allowed them in. That and it's very hard to justify not having a #1 at some point during the year in the tourney. Of course, the Big East deserved way better - neither BC not Seton Hall made it? *sigh* Shame.
Anyway, my picks, as of now: Midwest: Kentucky West: 'Zona South: Maryland East: Syracuse (Like I'm going to pull against a team playing 4 home games come tourney time.)
National Champions: Your Arizona Wildcats. (Yeah, I know about the other 'Cats on that side of the bracket, but all streaks must come to an end. If they had lost in the SEC tourney, I'd pick them all the way in a flash, but now, I'm cautious.) | Dutchie

They probably aren't considered a true sleeper, but I took Missouri to the Sweet Sixteen. They came through for me big time last week in the Conference Tournament, and if I hadn't flipflopped Oklahoma and Texas, I'd be a lot happier right now. Other than that, it all looks pretty conservative - took Tulsa and Butler to the Sweet Sixteen, Indiana over Pitt (I'm allowed to dream), Kansas losing in the 2nd round, Stanford over Texas, and Syracuse over Wake Forest. It's in ink and submitted, so my finals are:
Midwest: Kentucky West: Duke South: Maryland East: Oklahoma with Oklahoma beating Kentucky for the Championship.
The more I look at it, the more I think that I should just save myself 2 and a half weeks of heartache and burn my card within the next 36 hours. God I love this time of year! :) |
