Is this going to ACTUALLY give Wolverine's origin? Because I remember how pissed I was in the early 90s at all the mini-series and special issues that had "Wolverine's origin - Revealed!" on the cover, only to not reveal anything at all. This kind of shit (along with $4.00 for a comic book with a hole in the cover) is the reason I sstopped reading Marvel. So before I pick this thing up, please let me know (without giving away the ending, of course) if it's worth it, or if I'm going to want to shoot whoever Marvel's Editor is afterward. | Promote this thread! |             | odessasteps

Why? NO comic-book origin has ever been "revealed" for good, because someone will always come along a couple of years later and tweak it again. And again. And again.
I haven't bought a comic book (outside of an occasional Milk & Cheese, and a Flaming Carrot trade paperback) in over a decade, largely because I doubt I'd recognize most of the characters any more, and it'd cost a fortune to get caught up with their endlessly-revised histories. | Smackfiend

It's an awesome comic, it just leaves things too ambiguous.
It goes Origin, then horrifically long and huge gap in history, then Weapon X and so on. There's a lot they leave uncovered.

You at least get an idea of how old he really is- and you definitly get a good sense of how a "mutation" would be treated during that time. Definitly worth the read, and I think purchasing in Trade Paperback...

Reposted on: 7.3.10 2027.05 | I (unfortunately) got out of comics in 2000 due to quite a few reasons, but still pick up WIZARD every now and then to see what I'm missing. My roommate knows of my love for comics and constantly tries to bring me back in, and one day I walk into my room and see a copy of Origins lying on my desk. I of course read it, and thought it was a little "blah", but then again it was like part 2 of the series, I never read the other parts, and always liked Wolverine more when it was just a mystery and we didn't know. I found out later what I missed and still don't think I missed anything.
Edit: I think I would have loved it if they somehow threw in a Paul Harvey-esque ending such as "...and that little boy that no one liked... grew up to be Wolverine."

I was actually very skeptical (read: pissed) when I heard that this project was going to happen, because I thought it was the type of story that would be better off untold. I figured that telling the origin would damage the character.
But I read it anyway. And I liked it, though I thought the ending was way too abrupt. You learn the circumstances surrounding his childhood, as well as....the real name (No, it's not Cosmo). I do believe there will be a sequel but they won't be able to start work on it until 2004, after the art team (Andy Kubert and Richard Isanove) are done with Neil Gaiman's 1602.
Anyway, I thought it was great, and definitely worth a read. | Jakegnosis

In the end, the woman who Logan loves is killed when Logan aka the rich kid and Sabertooth aka Dog have their first confortation. The woman looks almost like Jean Grey plus the fact he is going to marry someone like Scott Summers was a bit out of place. Logan kills her when she trips into his claws. The physics alone make no sense since she was falling forward behind him and his claws were going straight for Sabertooth. You have to see it to believe how bad it was done.
My question is what is Neil Gaiman's 1620? I know Marvel has Gaiman under contract for a project. I thought he was going to do Dr. Strange.

As far as I know 1602 is just a codename for the project. The original rumor I heard about it was that it was going to be the Marvel Universe set in the year 1602. But that sounds kinda dumb. But it's Gaiman so it has a pretty good chance of not sucking. We'll just have to wait and see... | J. Kyle

Wolverine IS Canadian. He was born in Alberta, Canada [MY HOME!] in the 1890s or so to Mr. & Mrs. John Howlett, and named James Howlett. He was sickly in his youth, until his mutant abilities kicked in just when his father was murdered...and he popped his (bone) claws through the murderer's (named Mr. Logan) chest. James' mom shot herself, and the son of the murderer (named Dog) disappears. So, James & Rose (his playmate) bitchkick it to the mountains (BC) and James takes up work at a mine, calling himself Logan to avoid detection. Rose falls in love with another guy, Dog comes back (all growed up...presumably years later) and kills the man who Rose loves. James snaps, pops claws...and accidentally kills Rose. Whoops! I'm 90% sure that Dog is NOT Sabertooth, because that would just be plain NUTTY. The story ends with Wolverine with his super-duper healing factor, bone claws and a reflective, sullen attitude...seeing as how he killed somebody...again. Somebody he LOVED.
Any-hoo, hopefully the sequel (Origin 2: Electric Boogaloo) is better. Not that Origin wasn't good...it's just that it coulda been a lot better. | Mild Mannered Madman

Actually, there are indications the claws popped up before. Mrs. Howlett's midsection is covered with scars.
