| #41 Posted on 4.3.03 1805.06 Reposted on: 4.3.10 1808.00 | Smackdown is in a rough spot. Look where the Smackdown 6 are now: Edge and Angle on the shelf for a year. Eddy and Chavo in lame skits kickin it with Rikishi and Rey possibly getting into it with Matt Hardy. Beniot is the only one who is healthy who hasn't been lowered within the mid-card and he has no one to fued with. I'm guessing that Ryno is gonna get serious time to shine. I think this puts Team Angle in a bad position. Angle will be off tv for sure. Haas and Benjamin will lose a lot without him there. This is even more true if they are really trying to phase out Heyman.
It should be an interesting taping tonight, who knows how the hell this is gonna be handled. The WWE has some serious problems. At least Kurt should be able to recover fully. | cactuspete

| #42 Posted on 4.3.03 1809.42 Reposted on: 4.3.10 1812.22 | Well it looks like Angle winds up getting screwed for being the top overall performer in the game. This guy has been THE iron man of the company since 1999. The quality and quantity of his workrate has been unparalleled. His current active PPV streak is about 3 or 4 times longer than the next guy (Jericho, I believe). Its a miracle he has stayed relativly healthy for this long.
There's the old saying "Squeaky wheel gets the oil" (i.e. HBK, Hogan, HHH, Taker). Well maybe Kurt needs to be more squeaky backstage in order to preserve his career. To me its a shame that guys like Foley and Bret Hart have had their careers ended due to taking legit bumps "for the team", whereas the squeaky guys still get main event pushes despite working Lawler-type workrates.
This is why Rocky does movies. I hope Kurt goes Hollywood too during this period. It's for his own good. He deserves mainstream recognition. | OlFuzzyBastard

| #43 Posted on 4.3.03 1838.41 Reposted on: 4.3.10 1838.56 | I suppose it's only proper for me to begin this thread with the prerequisite "fuck". Believe me, it's an understatement. In one week, the WWE loses my favorite performer and regains the guy I was happiest to see go. Fuck beans.
I'd venture to say that nothing will be adressed during tonight's Smackdown tapings - especially since we've already got that Brock/Heyman match announced. Next week, Smackdown's in Pittsburgh - Kurt's always gets a 50% face reaction here, and if they want him to relinquish the belt due to injury (and that's just what I would do - if you bullshit the crowd with an injury angle, people are going to think it's just that, and be pissed off that they're getting "screwed" out of one of the biggest Wrestlemania matches.)
This really, really sucks. I hope to christ he's back in time to give us Angle-Lesnar at Wrestlemania XX.

But I'm also happy as a person that Angle is gonna get his neck fixed and make a good recovery so he can come back next year and kick ass.

Damn it to hell... First Edge, then Randy, now Kurt... Oh my god, do we have another 2002 on our hands?!?!?! This royally sucks, especially since the Team Angle version of Kurt Angle has been my personal favorite for a while. He was just so great at everything he does, especially with younger opponents (Kendrick last week). Now our dream match is on hold. This just sucks more and more. But wait... Who's this? That man with the hard body and the missing tooth? Benoit? The man who waited almost 17 years to be the WWE champ, and talked about it in his little interview segments? Yes, Benoit-Lesnar! There is some hope. But Kurt, God bless you, and we'll miss you tons. Get well soon, you Olympic stud!

Originally posted by Scott Summets This sucks, this is the worst injury easily since Austin getting surgery in late 99. Argue with me all you want, but in my honest opinion Angle is the best all around performer in the WWE today and possibly the best ever. Want a straight man, a funny man, a super-heel, a cowardly heel, a mind-games heel, a humorous face, a badass face, someone to job, someone to carry anyone to a 3-star match, etc. etc. You call Angle. Angle is one of those wrestlers that makes you proud to be a wrestling fan.... if someone insults you about wrestling, mention Angle and what he has done. My Dad normally doesn't watch wrestling, but if Angle is on, he'll run to the TV. Angle is a real life hero and hell of a guy from what I have heard of my (amateur) wrestling friends who have met him. He always goes out of his way to entertain us better than anyone else, and it really hurts to see this happen. This is some seriously sad news..... I have Angle's theme as my cell phone ringtone, and now everytime anyone calls me it reminds me of his injury.... this really really sucks. The only, and ONLY ray of sunlight in all this is get ready workrate fans.... here comes Benoit!
Man, you're an even bigger mark for Angle than me and that's saying something! And you're sig has a quote from Dark Knight Returns... You rock!
Damn, I can't even wrap my mind around a year with no Angle goodness. Damn.
I read in the OO board that Dr. Andrews has directed Angle not to go anywhere near the ring. But unless my memeory is finally gone completely, Andrews is the orthopedic surgeon, Youngblood is the neck man, so I don't think I trust that report. Does anyone know if there is confirmation that Dr. Youngblood has looked at this and confirmed that Angle needs THE surgery and 12 months off, or is that still just the worst case scenario?

Which leads me to speculate (again): I thought wrestling "WWE-style" matches was supposed to be safer. Doesn't look like it.
I mean, for example, guys are dropped on their necks left and right, night in and night out. So many guys now do a version of the german suplex, it seems like it must be a move they teach as part of their style. I might be wrong about that, but if I'm not, how can anyone think that's "safer"? | Mild Mannered Madman

Well, its safer than it was... Look at the vast difference between Benoit's german suplexes before and after mid-2001. The move's been made safer for those taking it (They take the bump on their back instead of their shoulders and neck), but it might be more harmful for those giving it now. | UnsUwe

I was freaking out like crazy about the Brock-Kurt match, and now Kurt is not only out for WM, but for one year? No way to compensate this one, in my opinion Kurt was the life of Smackdown. | sergeial

| #52 Posted on 6.3.03 1211.41 Reposted on: 6.3.10 1225.11 | I don't know, "safer" than what? The indy style, the lucha style, the puro style? Anyone more knowledgeable then me in those areas want to comment on how the WWE compares to the other kinds of pro wrestling in terms of injury rates?
And I doubt that the proliferation of German Suplexes is a mandate from on high. I see it more as Angle admired Benoit's style, and incorporated some of his moves into his own moveset, and lots of guys admire Benoit and Angle, so they emulate them.
I don't want to minimize anything, but I've asked smart friends why they think that this type of neck injury is proliferating so much and we came to the consensus that all of the effected wrestlers either have pre-existing neck issues, or have a move that is hard on the neck as a part of their regular repertoir. Or they were literally dropped on their head.
Angle: Broken neck Austin: Broken neck Rhyno: Gore Benoit: Swandive headbutt Lita: Dropped on head Bob Holly: Dropped on head Edge: Spear
I think that the above listed things have a lot more to do with keeping Dr. Youngblood so busy than german suplexes. But I'm no expert on this kind of thing, so I could certainly be wrong.
Maybe RVD should give the boys some yoga classes, he always takes a release suplex and makes it look like death, but he never seems any the worse for wear for it. A little added flexibility wouldn't hurt any of them.
sergei
edit: I wanted to add one more thing. The thing that really troubles me is that the wrestlers with spine-degenerating moves don't seem to be cutting back on their use of the move when they get back from the surgery. They seem to have the attitude of, "oh, my neck's as good as new now, and it took years to degenerate to the point that I needed surgery the first time around, so I'll be able to use this move again for years before I'll need to worry about it again." This seems like a really bad, bad idea.
