I have recently thought of subscribing to a video game mag so I can know whats coming out when, and what games I should check out, you know things of that nature. The problem is there are a ton of different mags, and I have no idea which ones are any good. I only have a PS2, so I thought of their magazine, but in case I ever do open the wallet for another system, it may be helpful to know about games for other consoles. Can someone give me some recommendations?

I've subscribed off and on to EGM (Electronic Gaming Monthly) and I've always been pretty satisfied with their coverage. There a all platform mag (PS2, X-Box, GameCube, GBA), but they have seperate sections for everything and usually pretty good coverage on what's coming up/what's already out, and I've really only disagreed with their reviews a handful of times.

I'd suggest, if it isn't too much of a hassel for you, pick one up at the newstand and see if it's your style. Other than that, I haven't really gotten any of the other platform magazines, so I couldn't tell you whether or not they're worth your time.

Electronic Gaming Monthly is pretty top-of-the-line. It's intelligent, well-written and seems to have it's facts straight. There's usually an interesting article or two, and the reviews are generally spot-on.

Game Informer is okay, but comes across (to me) as a dumbed down version of EGM.

Gamepro should be given out to people as they enter the gates of hell and is probably the most mindless magazine of any genre currently in print that doesn't regularly have pictures of Justin Timberlake on the cover.

There's also one I like called Play, but that might be more of an aquired taste. I swear, it takes an *intellectual* approach, and looks more like one of the graphic design magazines I pick up from time to time than a video game mag.

Still, EGM is probably your best bet for most normal (read: sane) people.

I'd just save your money and look up stuff online. and are pretty good. Gamespot has everything free up front, but after 30 days or so, content requires a subscription. IGN needs a subscription for a lot of things up front, but everythings free for awhile, even all the old reviews and such. Getting a subscription for either lets you look at more clips and pictures, and is about the same price as a magazine for a year, but there's plenty of free info available there or other sites.

But it's no fun trying to read a laptop on the toilet.

Here's another vote for EGM, I too have a subscription... might I also suggest, as a strictly newsstand "get one when necessary" option, the Official Playstation Magazine. To my knowledge, it's the only PS2 mag with a demo disk each month, and usually a demo of a title can tell you a lot more about whether you're going to like a game or not as opposed to somebody slapping a number rating on something.

It saved me 6 bucks on renting Getaway and knowing I'd hate it, while letting me stumble onto Dark Cloud 2, which I would probably have never given the time of day.

Let me first say that I REALLY miss Next Generation magazine. It was the first of it's kind to cater to a intelligent, mature audience, and it felt like a "news" magazine, as opposed to the candy coated crap that is written for/by twelve year olds. *cough*GamePro*cough* I've yet to see another mag really take its place

That said, Game Informer has picked up some of the slack and has started covering some of the hot button issues in the industry (the overall maturing of the genre, etc.) as well as covering all of the major consoles in depth. Pretty good stuff

Gamespot is cool too, plus you get the benefit of reading current news, so by the time it comes out in the mags two months later, it's already old news.

I'm a reader of EGM and OPM and I think both of them are great. I used to have a subscription to Gamepro but I grew up.

I used to like Gamepro but I decided I wanted to see game reviewed by real people instead of gimmicks.

Even though it's moved out to the West Coast from Lombard, Illinois, I will always pimp EGM due to Ed Semrad. One of the nicest gentlemen I've ever interviewed.

The "unofficial" PSM2 mag is also fun, although the "official" PSM has decent demo disks.

GamePro sucks donkey balls, btw.

I remember over a decade ago when Gamepro was something cool to have. I recall begging and pleading with my mom to buy me one on a trip to the grocery store. I collected the hell out of that magazine and it really does hurt to see what drivel it is today. EGM has always been awesome in my opinion and still remains that way to this day.

About the time I hit 8th grade I realized how worthless Gamepro was. Nowadays I don't read any magazine religiously, but every couple months I'll pick up either EGM, OPM, or the Official Xbox Mag. Mmmm...demolicious.

If you have just the PS2 (like you said), than OPM may be your best bet. BUT....information is nice, and EGM does have information on a much larger scale. Up to your tastes, wither you want more general info, or if you want less info and more hands-on stuff. Either way, both are good.

Stay away from GamePro.

I'm still loyal to PSM myself. Lots of humor, and after a few issues you feel like you get to know the guys in it. Really thoughtful reviews too, but then only for Playstation games. Plus, it usually has the best cover art of all the mags. Other than that, I usually buy a mag depending on whatever game is being focused on.

EGM all the way, although if Gameplayers was still around, I'd suggest that too.

Does EGM still run Hsu & Chan comics?
