ReplayTV & TiVo are wonderful things. Its that sort of toy that you get totally hooked on once you actually start to use it.

You're watching SmackDown when the phone rings -- you hit pause on the DVR & it buffers the show while you're on the phone. When you get off the phone, hit play, & watch from where you were while the system continues to buffer the rest of the show.

You get home after a weekend away. The box is happily recording Heat, but there's no problem with watching Velocity at the same time. And then move on to Heat even though its still recording.

Buffer up your favourite junk TV from whenever its on, & watch it whenever its convenient. Let the system record anime from 2:00 AM, Batman (with Adam West) from 4:00 AM, While You Were Out while you're out. If you get home & just need some junk to unwind to, you've got an assortment of things that you like, not just what happens to be on at the moment. And you can tell the system how to garbage collect this stuff if you don't get around to using it.

I've used both systems when living in other people's houses, & I prefer the ReplayTv. The newest versions of their stuff appear to have some really sexy features, but I haven't gotten to play with any of that yet.

One of the things that Tivo does that I find totally offensive is to (ostensibly) pay attention to what you record, & all on its own, record things for you that it thinks you'll like. I don't like pushy software, it does not do a particularly insightful job of this, & I don't much care for anybody keeping track of my viewing habits. And it junks your hard drive up with a bunch of crap that you didn't ask for. Nooooo-no-no-no-no.

There are a couple of sites I've stumbled across which compare the two :
http://egotron.com/ptv
http://electronics.cnet.com/electronics/0-6342371-8-4025114-1.html
http://www.sonicblue.com/video/replaytv/replaytv_4000_matrix.asp
http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/products/story/0,24330,3413014,00.html

Anybody else?

(CRZ, that automatic linkification is a wonderful feature! Very slick.)

You're not the only one who's had problems with TiVo making assumptions about the type of programming they like. Click Here (online.wsj.com).

I've had ReplayTV for about 3 months now and it's unbelievable. It's a little less user-friendly than Tivo, but it's got some awesome features. (Commercial Skip, Broadband support, and the ability to send/recieve shows from other units) Replay's monthly fee is also $10 compared to Tivo's $13.

Yes, the technology is not perfect yet and there are still some quirks to get used to. However, once you're hooked you'll never go without one again.

In summary: If ReplayTV was on Star Search, I'd give it three and three-quarter stars.

See, this is why I'm so stoked about what is being offered by the cable company that I subscribe to. If I read it right, I will be getting a box from them for free, and paying less per month for it than people who buy their own box. We'll see if it really plays out like this... but if it does... damn. That's a bargain.

Hmmm... that's an interesting promo that I haven't seen from a cable company yet. In New England, Comcast/AT&T sells a 40-hour Tivo unit for the discounted price of $199, but you still have to pay the regular monthly fee. If your cable company is letting you have the unit free, then I would jump on that in a second.

40-hour Replay for $179 (after rebate). You've got the rest of the month to send in the rebate, kids.
