Caught this one late last night in epic 2D!

I'm honestly surprised that this movie was as good as it was, since I don't remember Thor's story being all that interesting. But they nailed everything a comic fan would love about this movie. They nailed Thor's early hubris, Loki's complex machinations, the fearsome nature of the Frost Giants, the destructive nature of the Destroyer armor, and the personalities of the Asgardians. Heimdall stole the show for me, as he was pretty damn cool.

Hemsworth made a solid Thor, a lot better than I could have possibly expected and Natalie Portman...well, she's Natalie Portman in a comic book movie, so if you've seen the Star Wars preqels or V for Vendetta, you know exactly what to expect.

If you want a good special effects showcase, a good and faithful comic book story, and some hilarious bits of comedy relief, go see Thor!

As for the now-routine post-credits scene...

Spoiler Below: Highlight text to read
Nick Fury opens up a briefcase of...shattered fragments of THE COSMIC CUBE, while we see that Loki is not as dead as you might have believed.

Thumbs up for Thor!

I thought Portman was a lot more fun then she was in the prequels, I thought she was oscar worth in V mainly due to how crap the field usually is for Best Actress. The movie was awesome. I though Loki's actions at the end were suspect as well as Thor's interactions with Shield at the end. The after credit scenes is setting up Avengers were then any other scene, so far. A great beginning to what could be a legendary summer film season.

Suspect in what way? I'm not sure Thor did anything weird..

--

Hemsworth portrayed Thor well, being the big arogant jock at the beginning and learning (a bit quickly but that's ok) what it is to care for others and be humble.

Loki of course was awesome. If you go in knowing the character, you see the sly look in his eyes every scene.
He hears and notices everything and you can tell he will throw it back at you.

Battles were good. Cameo of the other Avenger was surprising but cool.
Everyone was very likable and believable in their role.
Portman as Jane Foster was a good choice. She was very energetic (so was her sidekick, Kat Dennings)

One of the best moments is when the Warriors 3 and Sif get to earth and stand there waving like goofs at Thor.
Even better was when Jane gives Thor a random shirt with a nametag of her ex...Donald Blake, MD. A nice little throw-away joke (when I saw it not many laughed)

Obviously the scene after the credits is awesome, and yes the revelations we get there set up the Avengers movie very well.

The one thing I noticed, but it might be the theater I went to...There were a few times when the 3D focused on a character (either in the back or foreground) and the rest was very blurry. Like...they didn't bother finishing things.

I thought the fact SHIELD imprisoned him and treated the humans like garbage then all of the sudden he is all in was a bit much. I don't want to give away anything too specific, but I thought Loki just seem to flip sides a little too easy, but thinking more about it thats kinda Loki where the plans are complex yet somehow very emotional as well. I actually thought Thor finding redemption was pretty good considering what he had to do be Might Thor again.

How arrogant Thor fell to Earth and had a change of heart after a weekend with Natalie Portman. Thor the god of thunder was awesome. Thor the movie was pretty good, but the half on Earth was more fun than the half on Asgard.

Great review. Agree on all points.
Tho I felt Loki's plan all along was to become the favorite son and the single heir of Odin. And he does that by playing tricks and scheming every chance he got, which means also contradicting himself at times.
After all, he is the god of mischief, not wicked evil chaos.

I found this blog interesting because I also had a similar thought: "Wait, shouldn't Thor have been on the other side of the broken bridge?"

Thor pining for Natalie Portman from Asgard is poignant, but I do think it maybe would have made more sense - and made for an easier set up for The Avengers - if Thor were stuck on Earth.

Either way, I liked Thor a lot.

No mention of you-know-who showing up halfway through??? Might be common insider knowledge, but I didn't know about it. I marked out for that harder than the post credits scene.

Small thing, but I liked the "Thor will return in The Avengers" line at the end of the credits. Reminded me of the old Superman movies.

I saw this with a group and the girls were drooling over Hemsworth, going as far as to look up pictures of him on their phones afterword. Haven't seen that reaction from the female audience for other superhero films.

Oh dude I squealed when you saw a pair of hands reach for the bow and not the gun. What followed just made it better. It was obvious it was put in later, but it was cool. Just like the references to Stark and Banner.

Too busy trying not to imagine HHH as Ned Starke in "game of thrones."

I saw it with all males of which one is gay. The moment Hemsworth walks around with his shirt off I hear him try to muffle a boisterous "Guuuuh" sound. I'm glad he enjoyed the movie so much.

Dude, when I saw he who shall remain unnamed grab the bow I flipped out too.

It was good, we talked like Asgardians at a local bar all night afterwards.

Did anyone recognize any of the artifacts in Asgard's vault? I heard the Infinity Gauntlet was in there, but didn't see it.

I heard someone mention the Cask of Eternal Winters was in there. (not seen it yet myself)

Also, for the comics nerds, Walter and Louise Simonson have cameos, in addition to the obligatory Stan Lee cameo.

And that's what I believe is going to give this movie legs. Girls are eating this up. I think word-of-mouth among girls will keep this movie in theatres longer than expected.

I wasn't familiar with Thor and didn't really know what to expect. It was a lot of fun.

The Cask of Eternal Winters was the item they were using through out the picture. There is some debate on the last artifact shown is either Doctor Strange's Eye of Power or The eye of Odin. JMS also had a cameo as the guy in the red truck who tried to lift the hammer.

I was wondering what that was. I thought it was the Ultimate version of the Watcher.

Speaking of, these movies are doing a better job of being "Ultimate" than the Ultimate Universe did.

Geez, Roger Ebert did NOT like Thor. I'm not surprised - well, I'm a little surprised. Ebert by and large is pretty okay with superhero movies in general. He roughed up Thor quite a bit, unfairly, I think.

We are in agreement in pointing out Asgard is poorly populated except for one scene at the start.

I think Ebert has lost his mind. No one remembers Obida from Iron Man 1. People are going to remember Loki. Seems a lot of angry film nerd in this review like its beneath Kenneth to direct this film and how dare the characters speak like they speak in the comics or in the Norse mythology. I get the scientist are thin, but without spoiling anything you have to think at least one becomes something greater then what was shown. I love Ebert for supporting Dark Knight and Spidey 2 for Best Picture as well as other sci-fi films, but he is a lot wrong in this review.
