Yeesh, at least the Dempster deal was somewhat equal. Was it that bad for Florida that they couldn't get more for Floyd than a potential #4 starter? And I don't mean Pavano, either. No matter what happens this season, as long as it ends in a World Series (I don't even care who's in it), I'll be paying attention to the Expos. Make the playoffs, go down in flames, whatever, they just made this season a hell of a lot more interesting.

As a Marlins fan, I can live with this one. The original scenario was awful in my book, but hey, they got Encarnacion, some prospects, and got rid of Floyd, who wasn't coming back anyway. Hate to see Dempster go, but they don't actually appear to be giving up on THIS year, for once, so I'm okay with it. And as much as I hate to say it, because I still like Cliff Floyd, I'll be shocked if he doesn't get hurt playing on turf so much.

--
ESPN.com's Rob Neyer's take on the Floyd trade:
The odd thing about the Expos making deals is this: they're not as good as their record, and they must be considered a long shot for even the wild card.

Essentially, the Expos have to hope that two of the contenders in the National League West collapse. Actually, that's not precisely accurate; the Expos can also hope that they, fortified with Bartolo Colon and now Cliff Floyd, will vault past whichever teams don't win the West title.

Hey, I'm all for the Expos. If this is their last season -- and I'll say, once again, that I'm not convinced this is their last season -- we can all pull for them to go out on a high note. But even with these recent deals, the odds are greatly against them. What's more, if the franchise does survive in some form, trading prospects in the face of long odds may someday seem the height of folly.
--

Hate to rain on any parades, but I DON'T believe it. I'm gonna say they finish 3rd in the East, behind the Braves and Mets. I can't believe that team is still only 2 games out of 2nd. There's no way they don't play better. I hate em, but they're gonna make a run. And if they are around next year and don't make the playoffs that Floyd trade was dumb. He WON'T re-sign there, simply because of the turf, if nothing else.

As a Reds fan, I'm really torn by our end of this deal.

I hate to see Encarnacion go, especially since that means they're sticking with Griffey. The Reds were a better team without Griffey in the lineup mostly because of Encarnacion's play. When Griffey gets hurt again, we'll be stuck with Reggie Taylor as the everyday centerfielder. Good backup, not so good regular. Even worse, we have little dependable right-handed power now. Boone is erratic, to say the least, and Kearns, although he'll be AWESOME soon, is still a rookie and can't really be counted on.

As good as Dempster WILL be, I'm not sure getting better pitching every fifth day is worth being worse overall everyday sans Encarnacion. I think we just ceded the NL Central to the Cardinals this year.

Don't jump on the "Encarnacion is all that" bandwagon just yet. HE's got a really good chance of becoming a 20-homer, 130-strikeout, .250 hitter...you don't need that.

I agree, but people shouldn't jump all over Dempster either. His numbers since last year's all-star break have been mediocre at best. (10-12, 5.25 ERA, 1.57 WHIP) You throw in his first half numbers from last year in and he goes to 20-20 4.88 ERA 1.54 WHIP. He's really only had one good year, his numbers keep getting worse as he goes on and the hitters get more familiar with him. However, he IS only 25, so he could still become one hell of a pitcher, but I don't think he has any more potential upside than Encarnacion, who is only one year older and appears to be learning the strike zone. I think this trade was even between the 2 guys and the fact that the Marlins got more (due to salary reasons) causes me to name them the winners in this deal...right now. Could certainly change.

Damn. I was wondering where Floyd would go.... didn't think it would be the Expos. I'm rooting for them i have to say. They look to be taking a legitimate shot at it. I have to disagree... the trade looks weak for Florida... but i guess time will tell. Just awesom for Montreal.

That's still a lot better than the numbers Taylor or Griffey (this season has been a complete wash and might be the beginning of the end for him) will put up for the Redlegs in center field, especially when you factor in Encarnacion's better base-stealing ability. I know he's has been playing over his head a bit this season in almost every respect, but given how everybody not named Dunn has been hitting and running WORSE than their career averages, I'll accept Juan's numbers.
