I caught the finals of last years compition where the *amatur* won it all. I also caught Day 1 of this years tournament where he got his ass booted. Consider me hooked. This totally kicks The World's Strongest Man and The Spelling Bee's ass.

Sadly, I've lost track of the World Series of Poker. It's one of those things ESPN just seems to throw in it's lineup out of the blue. So, I may never know if the man they call Jesus ever regained his stack of chips, or if the guy who shows up late kept his winning streak.

I'd like to think I'd stand a chance with some of these guys and make it to at least the 400's (out of 800+ entrants). However, I know that I am a dreamer, plus I think it's an $11,000 buy in type deal and I just ain't got that kinda scratch to burn.

If you are flipping channels you should check it out, it's more interesting than you might think.

Travel Channel's are a bit more linear and their announce crew is better. However, I'm not sure why they kept saying that the winner each week would get a spot at the final final table at the end of the World Series, when only one or two of them made it there.

The Travel Channel has a series of poker players as well, with one of the Van Pattens doing co-commentary.

I guess I should have added that I was a little disappointed not to see Gabe Kaplan back on the WSP commentary team this year...he was a real kick last year.

I ran across the Travel Channel's version of this and was amazed how quickly I became hooked. Now I watch it whenever I see that it's on.

I used to think that being a good Poker player required some skill and card counting know-how. But from what I have seen, it's 85% psychology, 10% luck, and 5% skill. Not that knowing when to hold them and know when to fold them does not require alot of skill.

Oooooh....now we have a topic that is very near and dear to my heart.

The WPT show on Travel Channel is a very nicely produced show, and having Mike Sexton on gives you some very good poker insight. I find he does a better job of explaining the psychology behind player's moves than any of the ESPN versions I have watched. Though Mr. Kotter is a hoot to have commentating, and is a damn solid announcer considering who he is.

Having played a decent amount of Hold'em I can say that the percentages Scooter gives are very fluid actually depending on game stakes, whether the game is a ring game or tournament game, and whether you're playing limit or no-limit. No-Limit is a much more psych based game than limit, and low-stakes will give luck a much wider berth than high stakes.

For anyone who wants to have a good read check out "Positively Fifth Street" by James MacManus. He is a writer and professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Harper's gave him an advance to go cover the WSOP a couple of years ago, and instead he took it and bought into a satellite tournament, won his way into the main WSOP, and went on a monster run for an amateur. It also winds in a murder trial involving the Binion family, the owners of the casino which holds the WSOP.

A couple of times I've pondered seeing if there would ever be any interest in a Wienerville poker night on one of the online poker rooms, but never quite got around to it. If anyone would be interested though, let me know

Lastly, if you go to ultimatebet.com there's a Phil Hellmuth table there, where he'll play sometimes, and it really is a kick to watch him playing against all these average folks. I bluffed him out of a pot once, and I have to say it was one of my prouder moments thus far in life.

(One other edit: for anyone who wants them and didn't catch them when it happened, the spoilers for the 2003 WSOP (casinowire.com))

You are correct CRZ, the World Series is running one night a week on ESPN with Tuesday Nights after Beg Borrow and Deal 2 being the "premire" night. Last night was night 2 and gave out some great stuff between Phil Hellmuth and The Grizzly...all out phsycology battle, i'll stop there so not to spoil the rest. This year payout of the WSoP was $2.5 million dollars, CASH MONEY.

Excalibur05 - The World Poker Tour (WPT) is different than the WSoP, WPT consisting of twelve different tournaments with one final big money tournament, and the World Series just being one tourney only.

I too miss Mr.Kotter, he really rocked in the 98 rerun the gave in ESPN the other day when Scotty Nygyen won. The new team of Lon McEachern and Norman Chad is good but I personally preffer Sexon and Patten.

I would be greatly intrested in playin with some Wieners poker spf, count me in. I play in truepoker.com but its mostly play money since I'm relativley new to the game and just wanna get the feel for it.

Whilst flipping through the channels, I inevitably stop at the poker. My wife thinks this absolutely ludicrous that I would watch people playing cards on television. It's one of those things that is hard to explain, though. I find once I've stopped on the station I literally MUST know how the game will turn out. Addictive, baby.

Anything that involves Gabe Kaplan is great (which is one of the key reasons why the final season of Welcome Back Kotter sucked as bad as it did). As much as I like Norm Chad for short bursts, over an hour he becomes annoying. Would much rather see Gabe do his thing for an hour. However, it would have been nice if he had opened and closed each episode of the WSP with a joke involving a relative.

Every year that the production is done on WSP, the better it gets. IIRC, this is the first year that you start seeing possible win percentage with everybody's (that stays in) hand, plus the hands themselves. On a tech. note -- 52 card graphics, seperately? Woof.

I did see Varkonyi get ousted while we were at a Culver's (our power was out for 60 hours)... Thanks to the Zed for the sked.

And BDL: You don't necessarily have to plunk down the $10K. IIRC, Varkonyi won a satellite, and THEN the WSOP last year.

I caught Day 2 today and it was quite entertaining with all the banter going on at the main table. I won't go into detail for those who haven't watched it, but CRZ you should be recapping these baby.

I wish I hadn't seen the person who won on Letterman a couple of weeks ago, but it's still compelling tv.

I was waiting for that old dude to punch out Hellmuth today!
