From 411:

Kurt Angle has delayed his much needed neck surgery so that he can wrestle against Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania. Working the match puts him in risk of paralysis.

The word backstage is that Angle really wanted to work the match, despite the risks, because it may be his final match ever.

Angle will eventually need to have more vertebrae fused, and once more than two are fused, he will be forced to retire. He can put off the surgery for the second vertebrae for many years, but is apparently considering retirement following his upcoming neck surgery.

Angle is fully aware that he may retire following surgery, which is why he wanted his potential final match to be a major bout at WrestleMania rather than a thrown together Smackdown TV match.

If this is true, and Rock retires for good after WM, that might be it for me as a wrestling fan.

If Angle does retire, I can certainly respect that decision. He would have the opportunity to live a happy long, healthy life with his wife and child. It would be a great loss, but there will always be a new superstar to take his place.

If I ever miss him, I can always pop in a dvd or tape of him at his best.

And if WM does turn out to be his last match ever, I will be able to say I was there!

If, and this is a major if still admittedly, Krut is going to retire after WM then one thing comes to my mind...

Bo Jackson

In both of these cases we would be seeing the career of someone who could very possibly be the best in the history of their industry being cut down due to injury long before their time. And if it is true we will be telling young wrestling fans 20 years from now that "you can't look at numbers to explain Kurt Angle, you had to be there" just as it's already becoming that way for Bo.

And once Angle retires and Rocky goes back to Hollywood, that'll leave us with...what, exactly?

Austin's on his last legs. Booker T has said many times that he wants to retire in the next few years. Undertaker has to retire EVENTUALLY! So who does that leave on top these next few years?

On Smackdown, you have Brock and Benoit (he'll likely become a main eventer by default, if for no other reason). Big Show will likely get foistered into the main event again. Maybe Edge will get his long-deserved shot once he comes back. And HOPEFULLY they usher in Rhyno!

The main event scene on Smackdown will be fine. Kurt's leaving behind a huge void, but I'm very confident that guys like Benoit, Team Angle, Rhyno, Mysterio, and Brock can help carry the load.

But then again...knowing Vince, he'll push Albert-Train, Big Show, Rikishi, Nathan Jones, and Undertaker to the main event.

Man, nice to know there's a lot of CRAP to even things out...I guess.

Very, very eerie comparison. Can't disagree one bit though. Sadly, however, the industry could really USE a Kurt Angle right now.

He's going to have about a year to weigh his options and figure out if it's worth it for him to just keep going.

If he does retire, I hope they try to keep him around in some non-wrestling capacity. Angle could manage people, talk for them and wrestle the occasional match. Kinda like an in-shape Bobby Heenan. :)

The thing is, he may not wait that year and have them do the whold thing the first time.

I agree here. Angle is easily the best performer on both shows right now, and he has/had the potential to be one of the best ever.

If Angle ends up retiring... DAMN. I don't know what to say.

Don't get me wrong -- I'd much rather see him walk away for good (emphasis on "walk," as in "under his own power") than to see a comeback result in a severe injury or worse. The man's health HAS to come first. But Kurt Angle has been the one and only guy on McMahon's roster who has never failed to entertain me. Heel or face, serious feud or goofy skit, American Hero or Self-Absorbed Twit, he's been a joy to watch from start to finish. M-V-f'ing-P.

The fingers are crossed.

Say it ain't so...Of all the wrestlers on the WWE roster, Kurt Angle is one of the few I watch. Him, Rey Rey, Edge, and Shawn Michaels...

If Kurt Angle retires, I'll be upset. Then again, we his brother, who's supposedly a decent wrestler, too....

This is incredibly sad news. Angle IS the total package, and it's simply not fair to him, us, or the wrestling business as a whole to lose such an amazing performer.

And, totally off topic,

Well, if it comes to that, then we will have at least had the experience of seeing him perform in his prime at the top of his capacity. Sad that it had to happen to such a gracious and decent guy. He's the one person that you never hear dirt about, you never hear about him complaining, and you are always happy to see him on your TV.

Let us hope that the roar of the crowd and the thrill of competition will be too much for Kurt to walk away from. Remember, he is Kurt Angle. If anyone can do it, it'll be him.

Angle has quickly achieved much in Wrestling. He has the marks, smarts, and IRC loving him. That is a great accomplishment in itself. He can wrestle his ass off and knows how to work a match better than guys who have been in pro wrestling 3 and 4 times longer than him. If this is true, this is sad. I am sure Vince is going to really regret how they let the Angle/Steph/HHH love triangle go. Imagine Steph going with Angle instead and the company going around Angle instead of HHH? No telling how the fortunes of the company would have gone.

I hope it isn't true, but if it is, the rumored 350k payoff at WM will be a nice send off.

And hey guys, it's not like KURT ANGLE said that he'd retire. It's what someone told 411 they heard. For all the "inside sources" and whatever, the only person who can decide what's best for Kurt Angle is Kurt Angle.

So, everyone remember to take their daily grain of salt when thinking what 411 said is the gospel.

That being said, if Kurt Angle does indeed retire, good for him. He had one hell of a run, and if anyone deserves to ride off in the sunet, it's him. If he decides to stay, awesome. We'll be in store for more awesome matches.

Come to think of it, the "dirt sheets" never said anything when he lost the hair vs. hair match to Edge last year.

I don't know about all of you wieners, but that news just damn near makes me want to cry. When he's gone from the sport for 6-12 months, I think we'll really be aware of how much we're going to lose. Him doing outside of the ring stuff is great, but I hate to think he'll be this era's Magnum T.A.

Thanks Kurt.

Dont plan the funeral before the body dies.

A lot of things can happen within a year. he needed the rest anyway. Angle is the WWE's version of Cal Ripken. I really hope he uses the opportunity to follow the Rock into the mainstream entertainment industry. Maybe the two can do a movie together.

its a testament to his integrity and work ethic that he is suiting up foe WM. I wouldnt expect an exciting fivestar match, but entetaining nonetheless.
