Probably my biggest moviegoing disappointment of 2011.

The Muppets review with SPOILERS at Back of the Head (backofthehead.com) in which I attempt to express my objections at a movie that would be more accurately titled: The Jason Segel Experience featuring WALTER!!! guest starring The Muppets.

This is disheartening. You figure if anyone could get this franchise right, it would be lifelong Muppet fan Jason Segel.

Your initial tweets made it seem much worse than the review would have you think. It doesn't seem like it'd be any worse than Muppets in Space or any of the terrible TV specials they've done in the past decade.

I'm not telling you or anyone not to see it. All I can do in the review is explain why I was so angry and disappointed by it. I hope you and everyone else like the movie more than I did.

It's the best Muppet movie since Henson died, which admittedly isn't saying much.

You'd unpleasantly surprised at how many people think CHRISTMAS CAROL is the pinnacle of Muppet moviedom.

It seems like it went in a meta direction that you didn't enjoy, which is understandable. I just can't not hold out hope that it'll be better than your review paints it. As I've said though, Frank Oz declining to do a Muppet show for the first time ever does make me a bit uneasy.

Muppets Treasure Island would be my favorite movie, to be honest. What a fun flick.

When I saw the previews and trailers, I had to ask one questions: who is Jason Segel? Second question is: how can they cast someone with such low charisma, he makes John Laurenitis from WWE seem exciting?

I hated on Muppets in Space something fierce, and I think this one will have the same reaction from me.

Well, just because I've been a gamer for most of my life doesnt' mean I can make a game, right? I dunno if that analogy is really correct, but meh.

Jason Segel's two biggest movies are Forgetting Sarah Marshall and I Love You Man, both of which I'm a big fan of. Marshall has an entire subplot about his character's desire to do a Dracula Musical with puppets. So there is that whole connection. Plus, he wrote all of the music for Russell Brand's fake band Infant Sorrow from that movie and Get Him to the Greek.

So, the guy's a fan, has a history with puppets, and can write songs.

While I don't expect everyone in the world to know who Jason Segel, I cannot believe anyone would say he has low charisma.

FWIW, he's one of the co-stars of the television show "How I Met Your Mother" (which is one of the funniest shows on television) and the male lead from the movie "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" (which was one of the funniest movies of the past five years).

Great Muppet Cape is my favorite. Muppetts take Manhattan is the worst one minus the wedding which has been turned into a weird divorce angle. Even when I saw it in a theater as a kid, I was thinking Broadway, really? You got the movie deal in the first one and have the TV show why would you want to do musicals. It could also be the start of my hatred of musicals of how bad Manhattan was. The wife loves Christmas Carol.

I really, REALLY loved Muppet Christmas Carol. It's my second favorite next to the original Muppet Movie. Gonzo and Rizzo make that film almost perfect.

I have a pass to see a sneak screening on Tuesday. I can't wait.

Muppet X-Mas was great, but that was largely because of Michael Caine.

Sarah Marshall wasn't that great, I have the feeling I'll be agreeing with Orc when I check it out.

I've seen pictures of Jason Segal and his brother Walter together and it's so weird how they look like brothers despite one being, you know, a Muppet.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall was a much better movie than expected. I loved it, though I really didn't need to see Segal's full-frontal junk. So Disney saw that and said, let's put that guy in our kids movie?

I told my kids they can see this or Jack and Jill since they want to see both. The fact that this is even a debate in my house make me feel like I've failed as a parent.

I've never caught How I Met Your Mother, or Forgetting Sarah Marshall. As I had mentioned in a previous post, I was basing my opinion on the trailers for the new movie, which really doesn't show much. I'm all for seeing new movies, so I'll add FSM to my list...but until then, my opinion still stands.

Seconded.

In fact, usually I love films for the exact same reason that John hates them.

And that was the case here as well. What John saw as an intrusive new character, I saw as a viewpoint character telling a meta-narrative about the new generation of Muppeteers picking up Jim Henson's legacy.
