Timeline:

Monday's game, Miguel Cabrera is hit by Brad Penny. Youkilis is then hit by Edwin Jackson.

You'd think that by going with the unwritten rules of plunking and retaliation, the situation's over. Detroit and Boston don't have any beef. Unfortunately, this is not the case.

Yesterday's game, Cabrera is hit *again*. He ends up leaving to get x-rays. Youkilis is then hit, same situation as before, only he goes apeshit and charges the pitcher Porcello, throwing his helmet at Porcello. Youk is clearly intending to harm the TWENTY YEAR OLD kid, when hilariously Porcello throws the chump to the ground.

Now, after having never once issued a warning to either side's pitching staff or managers, the umpire decides to throw out *PORCELLO*. Youkilis, the guy charging the mound and throwing his helmet, stays. Detroit's already used and worn pitching staff, even more decimated.

Total and utter Boston-protecting B.S. And this is coming from the guy who bashed the NY Times writer for specifically targeting Red Sox in that Manny/Ortiz 2003 list story. Hopefully tonight a Tiger can charge the mound after the first inside pitch and get Beckett thrown out of the game.

Youkilis was also ejected. Ironically, his replacement was Mike Lowell, who proceeded to hit 2 home runs in 3 at-bats. You would have been better off if Youk had stayed in.

Boromir - that does kinda blow your whole post out of the water. And that is the way it was reported on ESPN all night long.

In the 70's before they changed the rules, Larry Robinson of the Montreal Canadiens used to get into fights with the best player on the opposing team in the hopes of getting simultaneous penalties, which would make the teams play four on four. The Canadiens were so fast and so good at four on four that they had an overwhelming advantage in that situation and since it wasn't a power-play situation, the other team would be at a disadvantage for the full two minutes.

(Not to mention that there best player had been punched dizzy by Larry.)

They eventually got rid of four on four only bringing it back about twenty years later by which point no team was as dominant as the Canadiens in the 70s.

*****

All of which is to say that Youklis AND Porcello getting ejected is net advantage (in that specific situation) of the Red Sox, although given the Red Sox' injuries it is closer than you might think.

Oh, and Porcello and Youkilis are both out five games (sports.espn.go.com) after MLB handed down suspensions. They're both appealing, but five games for a starting pitcher is more like one for a position player, sooooo...

I don't understand the emotions that the Tigers pitcher shouldn't have been thrown out. He threw at somebody. Both pitchers, if they are clearly throwing at somebody should be enjected. And, if you charge the mound, it should be automatic as well.

So the Tigers would lose Porcello for a start and the Red Sox lose Youkilis for Five games? Given that the Red Sox won the game, we're back to even with a slight advantage to Detroit.

(Isn't Youkilis dinged up a little?)

I don't have a problem with both Porcello and Youkilis getting ejected. Porcello was clearly throwing at him and Boston had already gotten the same treatment when one of their guys plunked A-Rod a couple days earlier (i.e. ejected with no warning).

What is hilarious, though, is watching a 20-year-old, 150-lbs. soaking-wet kid completely own the goateed badass like he was Don Zimmer charging Pedro. And throwing your helmet at the guy while charging is a good way to signal you're a sissy, anyway.

I wouldn't feel too bad. After that 4-game sweep at the hands of the Yanks and with the Rays and Rangers coming on strong, the Red Sox are swirling the drain. Detroit will probably make the playoffs while the Red Sox are heading for a third place finish.

Not really... at that point, it's all about momentum. Were a matador strong enough, he could probably throw a bull to the ground. Step aside, grab by the horns, and let the thousands of pounds of fat do the work for you.

Besides, how many people charging the mound even get to the pitcher? Youk might've just assumed someone would grab him first.

Tampa seems to have taken the lead in circling the drain.
On the situation with guys getting thrown at: The Monday situation had settled itself with tit for tat. The Tuesday situation started with a rookie Red Sox pitcher hitting Cabrera on an 0-2 pitch with 0 outs and 2 on in the 1st. Now, I've watched a lot of baseball through the years, but usually you don't throw at a guy to load the bases with no one out in the first. You do it with 2 outs and no one on, which is what Porcello tried doing when he threw at Martinez, except he missed.
Now, if we are talking about questionable justice: Matt Garza gets a fine and no suspension for stating he threw at Mark Texiera after Joba headhunted Longoria, yet Beckett got 5 games earlier this year from former Yankees GM Bob Watson for air mailing a pitch that hit no one against Bobby Abreu.
As a side note: Detroit really has not matched up well against the East this season. That is the main reason they didn't run and hide when they had a chance in the Central.

Doesn't make it any less hilarious. And if he was worried about getting caught from behind he wouldn't have taken the time to throw his helmet like a little girl. Doesn't matter anyway....

I was watching the game live with my sons and we all agreed that Porcello was NOT throwing at Youkilis. If you watch his reaction to the pitch it was not "take that, Youk" it was more "geeze, I can't believe I hit him." We have Red Sox fans at our house and they thought Youkilis behaved like a dumbass.

As for Cabrera getting hit again - the pitch was close to being a strike. His hands are in the strike zone and Tazawa is throwing a breaking ball. I don't think Tazawa was throwing at him either and if he was, why didn't the umpire issue warnings at that point?

I agree. There's even a moment where Porcello kind of looks away as if to say, "Oh, shit." In this video of the game, the announcers try to argue that point as well. I also love how they are so very nonchalant about the brawl.

"It seems like Youkilis is always in the middle of things, doesn't it?"

Porcello may have gotten Youkilis to the ground, but I don't think he was going to be able to pass his guard.

This was absolutely hilarious. Boston always seems to have these horribly embarrassing moments during fights. They're not exactly the toughest team on the block, thats for sure. I also noticed Boston seems to incorporate beaning into its strategy lately, a sure sign of a desperate team. They plunked the Yankess all series(massacre) and tried to INITIATE retaliation on their end when one of their players (I cant remember who) leaned WAY in to a pitch and still couldn't make contact. Absolutely pathetic.

Ask Dock Ellis how well plunking the other team works. Admittedly, it was for the Pirates against the Reds and Their Huge Swinging Championship-Caliber Dicks, while the Red Sox are a hell of a lot closer to 1974-era Cincinnati's level.
