Smackdown! / Velocity Taping 10/8/02 – SPOILERS!

For somebody who never reads spoilers, I’m sure giving away a bunch of them here! But I’ve got to disclaim: there’s one piece of plotline that I’m omitting. (Sorry, but I just can’t bring myself to do it. Even though somebody else has already reported it.)

This was my second Smackdown-cast show in 2 days, since I also went to the house show in Tucson yesterday. Yesterday I was “up close & personal”; tonight I was up by the skyboxes. Completely different experiences! Being up in the boonies, I wasn’t nearly as involved in the show, & consequently got a lot of notes!
(Note: I am far-far-far from being a recapper! And I was scribbling notes while juggling binoculars. And the dog ate my homework.)

Lights down, music up …

Non-taped matches:

Match #1: Shannon Moore vs ?? some little baby-boy who makes Shannon look like a grizzled veteran (“Squeaky”, “Spanky”, something like that)
The baby-boy did some pretty moves, & they ran through some nice cruiser-style spots. Win to Shannon.

Match #2: Shelton Benjamin / Bull Buchannan vs. Bill DeMott & Big Valboski
Fine little tag match; DeMott & Val are a pretty good tag team, & win handily.

Cole & Mark Lloyd come out, & we start the Velocity tapings.

Match #3: Chuck (sans Billy) vs. Ron Simmons (formerly Farooq, sans D’Von)
The boy-band entrance is gone! Billy & Chuck still share entrance music & video, but they finally decided that “you look so good to me” is no longer appropriate. The new music is slightly techno, & the video demonstrates their heterosexuality.
Short match; Simmons wins.

New Veloci-Pyro!

Match #4: Chavo vs. Crash
There was one particular move that was either really cool or really scary – couldn’t tell from up by the rafters. Chavo picked Crash up, nearly dropped him on his head, but at the last minute tucked him under for a decent bump. Don’t know if it was supposed to work that way, but it looked pretty spiffy. Chavo wins.

Match #5: Albert gets some major heat just by walking out. Cuts a bit of a promo – did he say “Velocity Number One Prisoner”? vs. Funaki. Brief counter-promo. “I have a very difficult question for you: Why don’t you shave your back?”
A pretty fun match, including Funaki grabbing onto Albert’s back hair. Not at all the squash it might have been, in spite of the Albert win.

Setting up for Smackdown proper. I do love that “Desire” video with all the old clips. Tazz & Cole do their walk down the ramp – did Cole change his shirt during the video?

Mattitude video ripping on Phoenix (the Suns & the Diamondbacks). I guess they wanted to get that out of the way before the start of “the real show”.

Smackdown! Opening. Straight into the clip of Brock breaking Taker’s hand last week, with the subsequent Matt Hardy “pinfall”. Cut to Taker live in the parking lot looking pissed. With a big old cast from knuckles to mid forearm. (The cast has “No Pain” printed on it.)

Pseudo-Match #6: Matt out to the ring for a live promo. Taker does a run-in, beats on Matt for a while. Manages to punch the ringpost with the cast hand. We have several very good medical facilities in town if you need to have that thing reset, dear. And BTW, was that a different fashion statement than we’ve become accustomed to from Taker? Faded blue jeans, blue denim shirt (sleeves ripped off), lighter weight vest – maybe just because its hot in Phoenix.

Match #7: Rikishi vs Eddie Guerrero (w/ Chavo)
I love the sparkling flash bulbs from the audience as Eddie flies off the top rope. Double stinkface, with Eddie & Chavo both piled up in the same corner. Eddie wins by submission.

Torrie’s dad is again hanging around backstage. “Dad, what are you doing here?” WTF?

The cinema verite section of the show. Steph has Benoit & Angle in her office, reminding them that they are to get along, so she can have the best tag team of all. They are not happy campers. Out in the hall, Funaki attempts to interview Rey. Nidia comes in speaking tons of full-out, fluent spanish to Rey!!! (For the broadcast, we’d better either get subtitles, or CRZ will need a translator!) Hard to follow in the arena, but Nidia sure seemed to be interested in Rey, if’n you know what I mean. She walks away, runs straight into Jamie Noble, & the two of them have rather the lover’s spat. Meanwhile, Eddie & Chavo are hanging out by Steph’s door, as Benoit finally emerges. Eddie: “Did you just get in trouble?” (You gotta love Eddie.) Eddie telling Benoit that there’s a rumour going around that Kurt wants a year off to go train for the Olympics. So his getting suspended for a year wouldn’t be a big deal to him, & that Kurt might take Steph’s threatened suspension, as long as he could take Chris with him. Kurt walks out. “Hi, Homeslice.” (You gotta love Kurt.)

Meanwhile, back out in the ring …

Match #8:Billy Kidman (wearing the dreaded grey-with-blue-flames trunks) & John Cena (wearing Phoenix Suns’ purple & orange) vs. Angle & Benoit – Tag Team Tournament
Oooooh, watch the day-glo of Cena’s trunks strobe in the flashing lights! I was too busy watching to scribble many notes, but there was a bit of dissent between Kurt & Chris about how the match should be run. Fun Stuff. Kidman taps to the Crossface. Kurt & Chris continue to “discuss” all the way up the ramp.

Non-Match #9: Brockie & Heyman get the biggest pop of the night so far. Heyman promo on Taker re Hell in the Cell.

Stephanie backstage with Heyman & Brock. Apparently Jamie Noble vanished after his fight with Nidia. So Brock will be taking his place, teaming with Tajiri. Brock & Paul are not happy.

Match #10: Billy (with Chuck, & using the same new entrance that Chuck had earlier) vs. D’Von (with Ron Simmons)
Billy wins clean, in spite of Simmons’ cheating.

Crowd continues to get increasingly bored during the long commercial breaks. A brief “HLA” chant rises, for no apparent reason.Tazz does a bit of standup.

Backstage, Chavo lures Benoit into a dark room, saying something like “Eddie’s beating up Angle.” Crashing noises behind the door settle down. Chavo: “Hello? Uncle Eddie??” Eddie emerges, dragging a badly-warped steel chair. “Get the job done?” Eddie shows Chavo the chair. “Looks like it.”

Torrie says something to dad about being embarrassed about the upcoming Lingere Show. Dawn Marie makes a point of giving dad a preview. (This is heading in a much too creepy direction!)

Non-Match #11: Torrie (touching the hands of young boys & old men alike) vs Dawn Marie (Do you people realise how difficult it is to walk DOWN A RAMP in those ludicrous shoes???)
Dawn Marie’s black stockings, garters, & black-&-red lingere get a response from the audience. Taz observes: “Better than last week”. Another explosion of flashbulbs from the crowd. But still no match for Torrie’s white plunging-neckline body-suit thingie. Nothing else happens. Yawn.

Match #12: Brock (with Heyman) & Tajiri vs. Rey (good pop) & Edge (huge, screaming pop)
Edge does some nice stuff with Brock. Tajiri being very polite & obsequious to Brock & Paul. From up in the rafters, there were 2 or 3 times that it looked like Brock was being actually dangerous with Rey – grrrr. Biggest pops of the night for Rey’s 619, & for Edge slamming Brock. Edge/Rey win.
Brock is irritated, & is slamming everything in sight, including Tajiri. Now that the match has ended, Taker in to bludgeon Brock with the cast. Blood on the cast. I’m betting that’s the closing shot.

The after-show is Edge with Taker. Edge suggests The Taker-oonie, but apparently dead men don’t spin. They do some posing for pictures, Taker leaves. Edge brings in a special guest from the audience : Luis Gonzalez from the Diamondbacks. (Gonzo is one of the most popular players, got injured just before the end of the season, & has already had his shoulder surgery.) Edge is doing swing-the-baseball-bat poses; Gonzo’s, with one arm in a sling, look more like tennis swings. Security manages to get Gonzo out of the building without him being mobbed, & we head for the parking lot.

There were a number of matches tonight that had the same participants as last night’s house show. Some of those matches were very, very similar; some were completely different. That “compare & contrast” is a whole separate topic unto itself. I found that whole subject just fascinating.

My favourite sign of the night: “My girlfriend loves the 619”.

His name is seriously "Spanky" !?!??

Not badmouthing him at all -- he had a very nice little match. But given that Shannon looks about 16 years old, by comparison, Spanky must be about 11. (Look on the bright side -- last time Kurt Angle wrestled a 12 year-old, it was quite well received!)

you make a good point. and yes, his name is seriously "spanky". he used to use christina aguilera's "genie in a bottle" for his entrance music, too.. if you can believe that. oh, and that sentence from my other post shouldn't say "if there were any spots".. it should be "if there were any blown spots".. i think i will edit my original post now. haha. i just hope that he's still around next week.. maybe he'll team with lil guido against shannon moore and random wwe cruiserweight!!! yessss i can dream.

A little background:

Spanky (Brian Kendrick) is a former student of Shawn Michaels and Rudy Boy Gonzales, and is possibly the best indpendent talent in the country. He can fly, wrestle on the mat, tell a good story in the ring, and can cut one of the most hilarious promos I've ever seen. He came from the some graduating class as American Dragon (now wrestling in New Japan), Shooter Schultz (Sadly retired), and Lance Cade (currently wrestling in OVW under a developmental contract). He came to shine under a WWF developmental contract in Memphis Championship Wrestling, where he was paired with his fellow graduates and Jason Sensation. Eventually, he and Sensation split off from the "Kliq" to become the utter fantastical "Super Galactic Kliq 2000".

After he was released from his developmental contract, he moved out to California to wrestle for Ultimate Pro Wrestling (UPW) and Millenium Pro Wrestling (MPW), as well as competing in the 2001 Revolution J tournament, the 2001 Super 8 tournament, and the 2001 King of the Indies tournament. He currently wrestles as Spanky for UPW, EPIC, and Ring of Honor in the states, and wrestles in Japan for Shinya Hashimoto's ZERO-ONE company as Leonardo Spanky, where he does a Leo DiCaprio in Titanic sort of gimmick, which got over big-time there.

He got lotsa pub for that, as by that time, he'd moved to the Cincinatti area to work for HWA when it was still a WWE developmental territory. Mikey Henderson was supposed to win the UPW/NWA International/ZERO-ONE Junior Heavyweight Invitational Tournament and defend the title in Japan, but was not going to be able to make the tournament and Japanese tour, as his girlfriend was in the late stages of the tournament. On a day and a half's notice, Spanky was called. He drove 30 hours without stopping, from Cincinatti, Ohio to Anaheim, California, showed up an hour before the show, and won the tournament. (The other choice given to Z1 was Frankie Kazarian, but they instead wanted to use him in their tag division, with Jerry Lynn replacing Nova as his partner).

The champion, picked in California, was immediately supposed to lose the belt to top Z1 junior heavyweight, Naohiro Hoshikawa. However, Spanky got over to such a degree, and impressed the Z1 offices so much, that he defeated Hoshikawa, and held the belt until recently losing to Low Ki' last month.

Pros for Spanky:
His look.
His promos.
His adaptability in the ring. Spanky can work with ANYBODY
Can work face or heel effectively

Cons for Spanky:
Size. Spanky's only 5'5" 160 lbs.

Damn... either he's seriously committed to wrestling, or he oughta be committed.

I'm 5'8" myself, and a few inches taller than Spanky. So he lies. =)

He's now gonna be signed after he goes to Z1 one more time. Congrats, kid.

And where are they advertising they're hiring researchers? I AM unemployed, y'know.
