Well, it's been talked about for the better part of two years now, but last night MTV finally debuted their animated version of Spider Man.

I have to say it's pretty darn good. The animation style is a combo of 2D and 3D that creates a look simiar to cel-shaded video games like Robotech and Zelda. When I saw the promo I didn't like the style but it ended up being a good fit.

The continuity seems to be a mix of post-movie (Harry Osborn mentions Spider Man killing his father) and Ultimate (Brian Michael Bendis serves as executive producer and co-wrote the premiere.). Peter Parker is in college and pals around with Harry and Mary Jane Watson. Spidey and Mary Jane share a kiss at the end of the second episode. The villains for the first two episodes were a re-imagined Electro ( a nerdish Max Dillon picked on by an ESU fraternity) and a female Asian assasin whose name I missed. The tone of the show is a fair bit darker than previous cartoons, with a fairly high body count between the two episodes.

The voice acting is pretty top-notch as well. Neil Patrick Harris voices Peter/Spidey with Ian Ziering as Harry and Lisa Loeb(!) as Mary Jane. Ziering's voice is a little distinctive, so I see his 90210 character, but otherwise everyone handles their roles well.

So, I highly recommend checking it out if you're a Spidey fan. If you're not, this might not win you over because they jump right in with no setup. It's on Friday nights at ten with a gazillion replays throughout the weekend. ( I caught the eps at 2am!)

I only hope that this gets better treatment from MTV than it has given its last few animated series.

EDIT: I got my Spidey properties crossed.

It was very good. Fans of the movie should have no problem picking it up.

The animation is incredible, especially with the new Electro. The story takes place in the Ulitmate line of Spidey's college years.

It's much better than Striperella. and Stan Lee won't get sued over this one either.

Overall I think the show is pretty lame. Most of all is the corny, cheesy dialogue which sounds like it grates like cheese as well, kind of like an episode of other CG cartoons like Action Man or MAX STEEL. Its very much an MTV show so you shouldn't expect much from it, but at least I can see why its been delayed for about 2 years.

I thought the show was ok. It took a while for my eyes to get used to the animation, though. I was surprised at the darker view of the Spidey-verse being presented here. Anyway, I'm going to stick with it for a few more weeks at least. Kinda anxious to see the Lizard next week.

By the way, Shippe, I think you meant Ultimate, not Unlimited. Spider-Man Unlimited was that short-lived show from like three years ago about Spidey (from the 1995 series) stuck on a planet ruled by the High Evolutionary, and being chosen to lead the resistance movement. Seriously.

Yep, Dagent, slip of the geek tongue. Corrected the original post. Unlimited sucked...a lot.

Eh, they'll never top this version of Spider-Man. Remember that cool theme song?

Just saw it earlier today.. awesome.

Absolutely adore the Jet Set Radio Futuresque animation... absolutely.

The way Spider-Man moves is perfect, the pendulum swing onto the lamp post into slowly turning upside down and hanging from a single thread was so freakin GRACEFUL it was amazing.

And the decapitation was so HIGLANDER it was rock! "And slowly fall to the knees... good. Now tumble over without getting anything above your shoulders on camera again. Good. Alright people, that's a wrap."

It's not to bad of a show the one small reason to watch MTV. It was a nice show and I like to see more.

He looks like a cross between Marilyn Manson and Sting (the wrestler, not the singer).

If I looked like a gayer, electric, Richard Simmons I believe I'd turn to crime too.
