Just getting a chance to watch the 3/7/08 SmackDown, from a non-HD cable source. I noticed that we have the full HD width, letterboxed. Meanwhile, the CW logo in the lower right & WWE logo in the lower left are both inset from their respective edges, where they'd need to be for cropping for non-HD. The WWEHD logo in the upper left is at the proper HD-width corner (just inside the letterbox). Prior to this week, I think they were just cropping the sides. (Did that description actually make any sense?)

I guess my question is whether this is a CW-affiliate decision, or are WWE & CW trying different options to see what works? Just curious.

I think I prefer the letterboxing, but the bugs inset in the lower right & left will take some getting used to.

Not an expert, but I get 2 CW's through a cable package and they run Smackdown differently. One crops it the way you'd expect from an HD source > standard def. The other I think does what you described, showing the HD view letterboxed, but with the bugs on the screen that make it look like they were supposed to crop it but just couldn't be bothered too.

My guess is that it's either an affiliate decision, or else some just lack the people/technology/will to crop it properly. If the fact that both channels look like they smeared vasoline all over the lens is any indication, it's probably a combination of technology and will to use it.

Yes, it did, Emma. It's called "center-cutting." This will happen in some markets.

Anyhow -- whether or not the market can run SD! in HD is dependent on whether or not they have the equipment to switch between HD (for the programming) and SD (Standard Def -- not SmackDown! in this case). Your mileage may vary.
