Why is no one talking about this?

Here's the deal. Thanks to the Call To Arms trailer, I made the vow to help "The Expendables" beat out "Eat Pray Love" during opening weekend. But I really wanted to see this first. The last thing I wanted to see, though, was Scott Pilgrim pulling a Ross Perot and letting Julia Roberts sneak in at #1. So, I checked Friday's receipts and guessed that "The Expendables" would finish first comfortably for the weekend. This allowed me to go see Scott Pilgrim guilt-free. Who knows, maybe Stallone will need the help next week.

Anyway, this was pretty amazing. I know nothing of the graphic novel. The video game references were awesome. I loved the Zelda music at the beginning. I'm a huge fan of Edgar Wright's fast cuts. Does anyone more well-versed in the subject matter know of a director who could've done a better job? Seems to me that Wright was a perfect fit.

I absolutely hated Matthew Patel, LOVED Lucas Lee and Todd Ingram, enjoyed Roxie more than I thought I would, wondered what the point of the Twins was (though the battle was cool), and really liked Jason Schwartzman as G-Man.

Lucas Lee being introduced to the Universal Pictures theme music was inspired.

My one question is: what's so special about Ramona? To be honest, I didn't really like her and I wasn't pulling for Scott to end up with her. When she wasn't being bland, she was pretty off-putting. Scott belongs with Knives (who stole the show).

Up front, I never read the comic (as if).

I thought it was a pretty stunning movie. Not a supergreat movie itself but still quite the deal just based on all its ambition in everything it tried (+ funniness). Too bad it came out just a month after the most mindblowin' movie in years. Edgar Wright, the name of the director's name, did a heck of a job, and I thought he would, but I was surprised at how much Shaun OTD/Hot Fuzz comedy sensibility he brought to it with the cutting and the stuff. I wasn't expecting it to be as funny as it was and yet, quite a number of truly great laughs, especially in the first half before it kind of slowed down.

After seeing her in this and Mystery Team I'm kind of starting to doubt Aubrey Plaza's powers outside of the P&R office.

They quoted "To Ramona" by Bob Dylan so that was terrific.

No acknowledgment of Cera and Ann Paul Veal's legendary history was a big minus, especially when they were doing Seinfeld jokes and stuff.

The depiction of all gay characters as magical sex-crazed weirdos was pretty odd.

I think it's a movie being made out to be more than it is by the geek community. I saw it opening night and every video game nerd snorted and guffawed every time a video game reference was made. EVERY TIME. It was ok, maybe 3 stars out of 5, but not a revelation or anything.

Also, just a nitpick-y thing, but throughout the movie Scott Pilgrim wears Smashing Pumpkins t-shirts. One of the chapters is called "The Infinite Sadness". Yet, there are no Smashing Pumpkins songs on the soundtrack. There has to be a good reason for that, right?

Scott and Knives -- I don't know that they would want the 25yearold slacker to end up with the 16 year old girl. Did they change her age in the movie?

I haven't seen the movie and could lose my "comic biz cred" for really not wanting to see it.

I really didn't dig the last of the books.

And I also don't know why Romona Flowers is THE GIRL for Scott, other than she's the one for him.

I went and saw it with some friends, and I really enjoyed it. I didn't really buy into the Ramona thing either, they really didn't present her as anything special, but the visual style and mile a minute jokes all hit the mark really well. It's easily my favorite comic movie I've seen this year. Maybe it's blasphemy, but I liked it infinitely better than Kick-Ass.

There are so many little, less obvious jokes stuffed in there (like every other band in the film having a female drummer) it's probably worth another viewing, but I think I'll just wait for the DVD.

Neither the books nor the movie really ultimately establish her as such. She's the catalyst that sets Scott on a journey that's important for him, and at the end they agree to give it another shot, this time with their pasts fully behind them — that's really it.

As one of the resident comic geeks on the board, I also have to confess that I haven't read the graphic novel.

Having said that, this movie has me completely interested in it.

This isn't just one of my favorite movies of the year, it's probably one of my favorite movies, period. It's a freakin' laugh riot. Michael Cera pretty much just needed to play himself and he did an amazing job of it. The evil exes and the battles were balls-to-the-wall awesome. And it's a movie that REALLY isn't afraid to be completely over-the-top silly, but you won't feel stupid about laughing at any of it. I feel like everything clicked and the result is an absolutely fun-filled 2 hours.

I'll be seeing this a second and third time, something I haven't said about a movie (except for The Dark Knight and Inception) in many, many years.

Saw it yesterday as a precursor to Summerslam and loved it. So much fun...the editing cuts were genius and fast but never rushed/confusing. The music was awesome too, kudos to Beck & Nigel Godrich.

Not everyone has seen the "Greatest Sitcom Ever As Annointed By The Internet"...but I'm pretty sure everyone knows the Sein-theme. If I hadn't read it somewhere, I wouldn't have known that girl was on AD.

I think they were 23 and 17, respectively.

Not only did this guy who read the comic love it, the wife who has not read one page of the comic loved it. I dug it a lot. The audience I saw it with laughed out loud often.

Great movie. My wife and I had read the first book so we sort of knew what we were getting ourselves into. I think she enjoyed it even more than I did. It was funny and very visually appealing. We loved all of the words popping up everywhere, they made the comedy very engaging if that makes sense.

The funniest part for me was Scott playing the Final Fantasy baseline out of the blue. The funniest part for my wife was Scott failing to decide between saying "Who, her?" and "I have to pee."

People who bash this movie hate fun.

I saw this with my wife and a friend. Both my wife and I have read the comics, my friend had not. We all loved the movie to death. In fact, it's my favorite film of the year (I'll grant that Inception is a better film, but I just plain liked Scott Pilgrim more).

I really got a kick out of this. From the video game take on the Universal logo to the end result of Scott vs Mega Scott, I grinned and laughed a lot.

One of my favorites so far this year. Very cool.

I have never read any volume of "Scott Pilgrim," but based on the trailers, I was very much in anticipation of seeing this movie for quite some time.

Old dude/family committments meant that I could not do that until today. Wow. Loved it! It was like the Bizarro "Wonder Years."

Thoroughly enjoyed it, hope to get to see it again next week, will be looking for the soundtrack and will definitely buy the DVD when it comes out. Will also end up picking up the books at some point as well.

Hate for everyone involved that it's been a box office disappointment thus far, but with what ended up on screen, they have *NOTHING* to be ashamed of. I had a smile on my face from start to finish because of the story, performances, special effects, and just the "attitude" of the whole thing. Job well done!

I saw this Thursday and at age 38 can definitely say I was the oldest person in the theater. I couldn't help thinking I was too old to be enjoying this, but played enough video games and read enough comics to get most of it.
Lots of point for trying to be unique and not like other movies out there. I also didn't get the appeal of Ramona and what he was so crazy about her for. His ex the singer was way more attractive.

I didn't hate Michael Cera but struggled with someone so boyish playing a leading man, even a 22 year old one. He has a thirteen year old voice and came off gayer than any of the gay characters in the film.

Vegan Police scene rocked.

It would've been so easy to have Michael Cera say "Her?" in that context and that really would've been all I needed. (Phenomenal movie, though - my favorite of 2010 and with Inception, Kick-Ass, Shutter Island and Toy Story 3, that's saying a lot.)

Scott Pilgrim fell to 10th at the box office this weekend.

I have a really bad feeling that Universal's going to look at this as "We tried to be creative and it bombed" instead of "Hey, MAYBE we shouldn't have opened this head-to-head against Stallone's 80's ultra nostalgia-fest" like they should be.

Here's hoping this breaks all kinds of DVD records.

It suffered from Michael Cera overexposure. People just don't want to see him in anything right now maybe a few years down the road when he is not in everything or just up the routine a bit. Also, Expendables was the best time I have had in a theater in a long time. Yet, I don't think it would have mattered when they released it, its not a movie that is going to contact with a lot of people. Even as a comic geek, I have no desire to see this film and that seems to be the sentiment with a number of other people I know mainly due to Cera being in it and the rather lame ass idea of Romana being hot shit. I won't cast much judgment on this flick, but I do think it suffered from the casting even Romana isn't that hot, the ADD graphics like Speed Racer and lastly, it being a movie the internet loves, but society either doesn't get or wants to get. Its a bomb, but maybe DVD sales will save it maybe.

The best video game movie ever. Which isn't supposed to be as semi-sarcastically praising it, but for it capturing the feel of an absolute video game without being one.

Here's the thing: Wallace was killing it in the first 2/3rds of the movie. One funny line or bit after another, just rapid fire hilarity. And then...a bit later, in the final dungeon, Wallace gets one reaction shot, and I realize I haven't seen him in like 30 minutes (minus the scene in the apartment that I forgot about), and it's okay because I really wasn't missing him.

It's as if there's two movies here being smushed together; a high speed attempt to work in as much and as many lines as possible from the books for hour or so up to the Vegan Police, and then a (by comparison) relaxed pace to the end game where the writers seemed to know the broad ideas of what was left but didn't/couldn't try to match joke for joke and everyone got to breath a bit more. I really liked the first part, but everything moved so fast that I'm not sure I could've followed it had I not read the books. And I loved what they did with the different ending, both in setting it up in such an obvious way I totally missed it, and with it being so much clearer than it is in the final book. And the fights all looked super.

Still, if someone asked me if they should see the movie, I'd tell them to go read the books and then go see the movie*, because there's so much good stuff that's just cut - Kim was the most interesting character in the last two books to me, and you only get hints of that here and there, though she's still awesome. Natalie becoming Envy and dumping Scott might be the best written part of the book, because it comes off as every bit heart wrenching as it's meant, and it makes the last Envy/Scott scene in the movie come off strong because you know the story they couldn't find room to tell. (Don't get me wrong, they shouldn't have forced it in.) And on. There's stuff that works in completely different ways - Young Neil - but you're missing out if you're just watching the movie.

People who were great that I've failed to mention
- Knives; the movie would've failed if she didn't come up strong
- Gideon
- Julie! who needs to win an award for nailing that coffee shop scene
- Stacey, on the phone

* - and then they'd be mad at me because this movie is totally going to be out of the theaters next week, amiright? Oh well, not my money.

I loved that it was faithful to the spirit of the comics, without using the comics as storyboarding. It kind of reminded me of the Hitchhiker's Guide movie in that way (and yes, that is a compliment, shut up).

Everyone has been talking about Wallace (with good reason), but I kind of wanted to take Young Neil home with me and keep him on my couch.

Count me in as one of the people who found this to be their favorite film of the year. I've been listening to the soundtrack nonstop. I actually kind of wish Wright would film a batshit Zach Snyder long 4 or 5 hour complete adaptation of the books because the more Scott Pilgrim the better.
