So I've started watching a lot more ROH lately what with the Black Friday and Holiday sales so I'm buying these shows now (Enter The Dragon and This Means War are fantastic). The way Final Battle 2005 is shaping up, I think THIS is going to be the wrestling event of the year.

So here's what the card is looking like right now (from ROH wrestling.com):

Ricky Reyes vs. Davey Andrews

Alex Shelley vs. Azrieal

Colt Cabana vs. ???

Christopher Daniels vs. BJ Whitmer vs. Samoa Joe vs. Jay Lethal

Jimmy Rave vs. Milano Connection AT

GHC Jr. Heavyweight Title Match
Kenta(c)!!! vs. Low-ki!!!!!

ROH Tag Team Title Match
Tony Mamaluke and Sal Rinauro(c) vs. Generation Next (Aries and Strong)

ROH Pure Title Match
Nigel McGuinness(c) vs. Claudio Castagnoli

ROH World Title Match
The American Dragon, Bryan Danielson(c) vs. Naomichi Marufuji

Throw in something like a Lethal/Joe rematch with some sort of cool stipulation and like BJ Whitmer vs. Daniels and I'd say you've got a pretty stacked and awesome fucking looking card here. I wonder if Ki/Kenta can live up to Joe vs. Kobashi. To my knowledge, this will be AJ and Shelley's first ROH match, anyone know?

I'm hoping Aries and Strong win the tag titles.

    GHC Jr. Heavyweight Title Match
    Kenta Kobashi(c)!!! vs. Low-ki!!!!!

I hate to break it to you, but there are two Kentas in NOAH. There's the legend Kenta Kobashi, and the current GHC Jr. Heavyweight champion, who simply goes by the name of KENTA. Low-Ki is not wrestling Kenta Kobashi, but KENTA. He is much smaller! But have no fear, he is very very good!

The show sounds fairly good, Cabana and Homicide were going to have their big blow off match but Homicide got hurt in his recent match with Steve Corino, so that's out. Nigel vs. Claudio sounds like it's been a great feud! Marufuji is kind of overrated but he's wrestling quite possibly the best wrestler in the world!

ROH has also added Samoa Joe vs. Jay Lethal vs. Christopher Daniels vs. BJ Whitmer. Ugh. I hate ROH doing so many four ways, and this one is such a waste of talent. I know Gabe probably likes them though because they're an easy way to keep feuds going without actually giving away anything. Also added is Jimmy Rave vs. Milano Collection AT, which could be good but I'm not creaming my pants.

I'd say Rave is overdue for a strong win.

Is the 4 way match elimination or 4 corners survival rules?

Pity that Homicide's injury is keeping him from a proper blow off to his feud with Cabana. It didn't look too bad from my vantage point, but he favored his shoulder pretty severely after overshhoting Corino on his dive.
Apparently the people on the right side of the ring to see it happen said it was though Homicide's shoulder excused itself and left his body temporarily. It'll probably be a while before we see him again.

And count me in against the four-way, unless it's there to put over Lethal in a huge way. Everyone really went in for him when he heeled on Joe, it was very cool. When I saw Shelton Benjamin start to turn on HBK, my first thought was "you know, Gerwitz was at that show Saturday".

Why should anyone cream their pants over Milano? I liked him fine the first time I saw him, but after the ROH board's hype on the guy, he kind of fell flat. Liked the invisible dog though.

This does look like a heckuva show. Pity I'll miss it, and the next Manhattan show. I guess I'll be trekking to Philly and Boston in the near future...

The four-way I don't mind as much, seeing as how the feud literally just kicked off on Friday. I actually sort of prefer that they build more to that singles rematch, rather than have what could be a blow-off less than one month into the feud, you know?

I concur about Milano and feel the same way about Claudio Castagnoli. I read people going on and on about him, on the ROH boards and elsewhere, basically implying he was the next big thing for ROH. Having seen two of his matches I have to say that I just don't see it. He's good and all, but I don't think he's THAT great. Nigel McGuinness has become too good of a heel over the past couple months to not have a Homicide/Cabana type feud going on with someone, and while he and Castagnoli work well together, it's missing that aspect of a heated feud.

I wasn't planning on visiting the City until January, but I might have to make an exception for ROH...

I'd personally want Cabana's opponent to be Abyss, Ricky Reyes, or Rocky Romero. Not sure if Abyss is scheduled for this event or not, but I think Cabana vs. Abyss would be awesome. And what about Corino?

I thought Homicide's injury wasn't so serious that he'd be needing surgery, just bad enough that he'd be out of it for Final Battle?

A quick glance at their 'upcoming events' has him less than booked through at least the end of January. I don't know if he'd made commitments before being injured, but he's one of their "tippy top guys"(tm) and I can't see keeping him out for almost two months unless he's in pretty bad shape.

Sapolsky also said on the raw footage that it looked like the bone nearly came through the skin.

Any chance that Ki might actually win against KENTA to set-up a rematch in japan?

Y'know pull the whole Zybysko/Masa Saito switch?

According to ROHwrestling.com AJ Styles has to now drop out of his match with Colt Cabana due to his busted lip at Turning Point in his match with Samoa Joe. So now AJ is the second person to drop out of a match with Colt Cabana at Final Battle due to injury. Too bad for Colt and us ROH fans.

Well the card still looks good, just not nearly as good as it was a while ago. Its too bad I was really looking forward to Shelley and AJ's first ROH match.

EDIT:

The card has been shifted again. So now its Colt Cabana vs. Azrieal and Steve Corino vs. Alex Shelley.

The busted lip thing is a bogus excuse, just so you know. AJ worked two matches Tuesday (two days after his lip injury) and he was still confirmed for Vince Russo's Ring of Glory's show tonight (Friday).

It has a lot more to do with TNA being pissed at ROH for having Joe lose on December 3rd and ultimately TNA trying to protect their workers and storylines. Unfortunately for them, guys like Joe are going to be loyal to ROH (and rightfully so) and continue their storylines in ROH whether or not it interferes with TNA's plans.

This is a highly overlooked story, by the way. Check into it.

I don't know anything about Russo's deal (I assume that if Styles cancels that gig, Baby Jesus will cry), but as for the two matches Tuesday -- Styles probably puts a pretty high priority on not ditching the TNA tapings, which are TV for the rest of the year and include, I think, the "first match of 2006."

Styles is their golden boy and under contract to them, unlike ROH (I guess -- do they use contracts?), and is shouldering more in TNA right now, so he probably feels a lot more responsibility to TNA at this point. Him not doing the tapings Tuesday would be a big blow to TNA; not working the ROH show is more of an inconvenience.

I'm just saying that it's probably no fun being busted open as much as he is, and I can't begrudge him wanting to take some time off, and if he's going to make a choice about what he's going to gut his way through and what he isn't, then it's pretty clear he made the right choice.

I think that saying "you worked this show, therefore you have no excuse not to work this other show" is assuming an awful lot, as is claiming that the situation is some sort of petty power play on anyone's part.

(I do agree that ROH has no responsibility to be "consistent" or whatever with TNA storylines.)

AJ's a trooper and was probably willing to work the tapings which were important. Also, these matches we're talking about are like what? 5-7 minutes? One is a tag match where he could probably work lighter. That's a big difference than working a real high impact big show ROH match, so AJ probably needed the rest and time to heal, especially after that brutal match with Joe at Turning point which I imagine hurt him a little more than just a busted lip.

Sorry, but I don't buy that wacko conspiracy theory at all. If TNA was THAT concerned about how ROH books their shows, they wouldn't consistently have Alex Shelley and Roderick Strong tag teaming with each other week after week and on PPV as well.

Last time I checked, Shelley and Strong were mortal enemies in ROH and on the opposites sides of a bitter feud (GenNext and The Embassy). In TNA they are frequent tag partners in the X division. At the PPV they faced off against Austin Aries, Strong's current leader of the GenNext stable and tag partner on Saturday in the tag title match.

EDIT: SHOW RESULTS from ROHwrestling.com forums -

    Student Matches:

    1) Smash Bradley/Mitch Franklin vs Dempsey Bros: Went around 4 min. Double team back senton for the pinfall, alright tag match.

    2) Pelle Primeau vs Shane Hagadorn: Pelle gets the victory with an armbar, the same variation used by Danielson over Strong two months ago.

    Main Show:

    1) Milano Collection AT vs "The Crowned Jewel of The Embassy" Jimmy Rave: Went about 14 min, Rave scores the victory after his pedigree, good match, great opener.

    2) Azrieal v. "Classic" Colt Cabana: Went about ten minutes, entertaining look as Azrieal tried to make it a comedy match, while Colt was trying to be serious. Homicide came out, cut a promo, saying he just had shoulder surgery and will be out of action for roughly six months. Told Colt he's only here tonight for Corino, and for Cabana to stay out of his business. 'Cide had his arm in a sling.

    3) RING OF HONOR PURE TITLE MATCH - Nigel McGuinness (C) v. Claudio Castagnoli: Claudio used iron when ref was knocked out and got the pinfall in about 15 minutes. However, the second ref saw it and reversed the decision to award the match to Nigel via DQ.

    4) Steve Corino v. Alex Shelley: Shelley over Corino with a rollup after 13 minutes. Homicide jumped Corino after the match and tried to pour Drano down Steve's throat. Colt came out to make the save, however 'Cide put him down and poured down Colt's throat. Students came out to save them. No big intro for Corino since Nana grabbed his announcer and pushed him down before he began.

    - 4 Year Anniversary Night 1 announced for a return to New Jersey in February. Lethal gave an interview about being done as Joe's protege. Then announced his services are out for the highest bid.

5)FOUR CORNER SURVIVAL MATCH - Samoa Joe v. Jay Lethal v. "The Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels v. BJ Whitmer: Joe came out to his "Champ Is Here" theme since he had the X title with him. Catfight between Lacey and Allison, and Danger was wearing the nun outfit. Joe hit Daniels with a Musclebuster on X title. BJ took Joe out with chair. Lethal took out BJ with springboard dropkick, then Lethal gets Daniels with the swandive headbutt. Was a totally kickass match.

    INTERMISSION

    6) Davey Andrews v. Ricky Reyes: Reyes over Andrews in about 2 and a half minutes with a dragon sleeper. Took a lead pipe to the trophy. Aries came out to stop him, running him off. Aries cutting a promo right now.

    7) RING OF HONOR TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH - Tony Mamaluke & Sal Rinauro (C) v. Generation Next of Austin Aries & Roderick Strong: Roderick lit up Sal with roughly 20 chops, Rinauro was bleeding from the chest. Aries/Strong win after Roderick hits a half-nelson backbreaker on Sal, with Aries following up with a 450 for the pinfall in 18 min. Great match.

    8) RING OF HONOR WORLD TITLE MATCH - "The American Dragon" Bryan Danielson (C) v. Naomichi Marufuji: Danielson wins in 22 min after a series of pinfall sequences. Very awesome match. Streamers for both men, crowd chanting "Please come back!" to Marafuji afterwards. Embassy on the ramp at end of match to demand title matches against Dragon.

    9) GLOBAL HONORED CROWN JUNIOR HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE MATCH - KENTA (C) v. Low Ki: KENTA pinned Low Ki after 2 Bushido knee strikes to win after 26 minutes. Ki nailed 2 Ki Krushers as well as 2 Double Stomps, and still wasn't enough. Halfway through, there was a "THIS IS AWESOME!" chant which was just deafening. MOTY chants afterwards, "Thank you NOAH" chants, "Please Come Back" chants, "5 Star Match" chants.

After the show, everyone was asked to bring their chair down to the lobby since there's just one exit in the building, and to help them clean up. Thanks to Lurker Greg for once again providing results.

Notes:

-A singles win for Shelley makes me happy.

-GenNext wins the tag titles! YES! I can't think of more deserving guys on the roster than Strong and Aries. It really just caps off what's been a fantastic year for both guys in ROH, even moreso for Strong who has really stepped up recently. I hope their winning the tag titles is as Cornette said in bringing back tag teams and tag team wrestling as strong focus in ROH.

-The idea of Danielson feuding with the Embassy sounds really interesting. I think AmDragon/Abyss could be interesting or a bad clash in styles. But also Danielson/Shelley and Danielson/Rave could both be awesome.

-Despite the absence of Styles and Homicide not competing, ROH still managed to pull off a stacked and awesome show.

The Rave/Milano match was awesome and the perfect opener for the show. As a Rave fan who had never seen Milano before, I really enjoyed his performance. Rave's pedigree gets so much heat its awesome.

The Pure title match was a joke. McGuiness came out before the match and cut a promo talking about how he was the only original talent in the back and not trying to emulate other more popular wrestlers like everyone else. Then he said he was going to do his own ring introduction, and did an intentionally poor impression of Road Dogg's DX tag team champions of the world schtick, followed by saying he's "the best there is, the best there was, and the best --" before the fans cut that off, and then he finished up with the Road Dogg shtick again (he's the N to the I to G to the E to the L, etc.). That part was entertaining, but to have the Pure Wrestling Title decided on an overbooked Dusty Finish was crap. (And the fans were chanting "Dusty Finish" as it was happening.) The whole point of that title is that it isn't about angles and whatnot and that was ignored. McGuiness and Castagnoli had a good match, that I enjoyed, but it would have worked just as well as a regular match and they should have the Pure title defended... purely.

The four corners match started out interesting, then devolved into what felt like a Lethal/Whitmer vs. Joe/Daniels match, where Daniels played face-in-peril for what seemed like forever. After Lethal's promo, there was good heat for Joe and Lethal to get in the ring, but no one tagged in Joe for what felt like the first ten minutes of the match. He just stood on the apron making faces and acknowledging the crowd. Good, fun match overall.

The chops during the Strong/Aries vs. Mamaluke/Sal got a bit overdone. I'm not on the GenNext bandwagon so I might be a bit biased in that assessment.

Personally, I enjoyed Danielson/Marafuji more than KENTA/Low-ki. However, both matches were AWESOME. I don't know if I'd label either one a MOTYC, though. Still, the early part of KENTA/Low-ki reminded me of the back-and-forth stiffness from Joe vs. Low-ki WAY back before Joe won the ROH title. I wonder what it must be like for these Japanese wrestlers to come over here and recieve such a warm reception.

Overall, it was a good show, despite the fact that these shows always last about a match or two longer than they should. But that's par for the course for these shows.

I enjoyed the show a lot, but mostly for the wrestlers that came over from Japan. The first match (Milano vs. Rave) was pretty crisp and Milano got great face heat. Danielson vs. Marufuji was an amazing wrestling match with Danielson showing more emotion than I've seen from him in the past. But in my opinion, KENTA and Low Ki tore up the place with the best match of the night. It was 30 minutes of high energy action, with so many HARD strikes. Low Ki took as much or more punishment than he gave out. And the Go2Sleep from KENTA is such a great move.

As a CZW fan and thus a huge Claudio (and Chris Hero) mark, I have to say that Nigel McGuiness won me over last night. In fact, he was probably too comedic, as he got tons of face heat for his antics before the match. It hurt Claudio as the natural face. The match itself was pretty good, but the finish was PURE...CRAP. But hey, it was better than a clean pin on one of most over new guys in ROH, Claudio Castagnoli.

Overall, I enjoyed this show a great deal, but I thought the last Philly show in October (my first live ROH show) was a bit better than this show. It didn't help that the arena was an ice rink, so I was freezing my butt off the entire night.
