Harmonix released more details about Rock Band Blitz this week. We now have 15 of the 25 songs revealed, as well as info on some of the powerups.

Known songs:
• All-American Rejects - Kids In The Street
• Barenaked Ladies - One Week
• Blink-182 - Always
• Collective Soul - Shine
• Elton John - I'm Still Standing
• Fall Out Boy - A Little Less Sixteen Candles, A Little More "Touch Me"
• Foster The People - Pumped Up Kicks
• Great White - Once Bitten, Twice Shy
• Iron Maiden - Wicker Man
• Living Colour - Cult Of Personality
• P!nk - Raise Your Glass
• Quiet Riot - Metal Health
• Rick Springfield - Jessie's Girl
• Shinedown - Diamond Eyes
• Tears For Fears - Shout

And while they may SAY that they included Cult of Personality to suck up to CM Punk, we all know who's really responsible:

In addition, here are some of the powerups in the game:
• Bandmate: takes over a track and plays all notes for you
• Blast Note: blows up any notes it touches
• Bottle Rocket: explodes and clears notes it hits on tracks
• Flame Note: burn everything with fire to keep
• Jackpot: play absolutely perfect to earn 3X points, but flub up and lose it all
• Pinball Note: keep a pinball bouncing to clear touched notes
• Point Doubler: 2x points
• Runaway Note: chase a note to get a bonus
• Shockwave: sends out a wave that scores on all notes it touches
• Synchrony: switches tracks without breaking your note streak

And a brief video about said powerups:

So yeah. You probably don't care! But I do, so go start a thread about something else if that's how you're going to be.

It sounds like fun...

As a fan of the series, do you think the power ups/ improvements will freshen up the game?

It's hard to tell, since it's an entirely new gameplay mechanic. You use a standard controller, not a plastic guitar. I think it looks fun and arcadey, but even if it sucks, it should still be a fair-priced DLC add-on for Rock Band 3, so it's a first-day purchase for me.

More announcements (that you still don't care about): the game is out on August 28 for $14.99 on PSN and August 29 for 1,200 points on Xbox Live. And there are four new songs announced, bringing the total to 19:
• Avenged Sevenfold – So Far Away
• Fun. ft. Janelle Monáe – We Are Young
• Kool & The Gang – Jungle Boogie
• My Chemical Romance – Sing

And here's another video:

$15? You're just full of good news today!

Will it be more to export the songs to RB3?

Unless I'm misunderstanding things, the songs work in RB3 with no export fee, just like DLC. So even if Blitz sucks, you're exsentially getting a sweet RB3 DLC pack at a big discount. And they should still have more songs left to announce.

Also, all of your existing Rock Band songs (with the exception of the songs on the RB3 disc, since there's no export licence for those yet) will automatically work in Blitz.

The last six Rock Band Blitz songs:
• Foo Fighters – These Days
• Kelly Clarkson – Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)
• Maroon 5 – Moves Like Jagger
• Queen – Death on Two Legs
• Red Hot Chili Peppers – Give It Away
• Soundgarden – Spoonman

BIG markout over here for the returns to Rock Band of Spoonman and (especially) Give It Away. Blood Sugar Sex Magik is whole again and I am delighted.

Just a quick update - early reviews (all of which that I've seen have been positive) confirm that the songs export to Rock Band 3 at no extra cost.

One evening in, and I'm enjoying the core gameplay more than I thought I would. It's very simple - switch back and forth between tracks and hit as many notes as you can - but the strategy is deeper than you'd think. You need to know the songs well, have fast fingers, watch the multiplier, and master the power-ups. There's a lot to keep track of.

They've included a lot of the social mechanics that make Facebook games so irritatingly addictive - you "buy" power-ups with coins that you win in the game, you need to check in regularly to play score challenges, and there are incentives to play new songs and to challenge your friends to songs. This type of nonsense works exceptionally well on me, but your patience for it may vary.

I don't have a huge list of Xbox Live friends, but at least five of them have already bought the game. Not sure if the social aspects will keep people playing regularly for a long time (like Uno) or if people will lose interest quickly (like Uno Rush).

My wife has zero interest in playing Blitz, saying that "it looks like the parts of Rock Band that I don't like," but she really only likes the singing part. To that end, getting the 25 new songs as a Rock Band 3 add-on for $15 is a deal. I would have bought 12 of the 25 songs as DLC without hesitation, and those alone would have cost me more than Blitz did.

Unfortunately, the reverse is not true and you cannot export on-disc RB3 tracks to Blitz. So no Bohemian Rhapsody or Power of Love.

True. Music licencing is hard and stupid. Harmonix has had DLC fall through at the last minute a few times this year alone. The exporting licences are different from the DLC licences. When/if they release Rock Band 4 (or whatever they'll call RB3's successor), you'll be able to export most (all?) of the songs from RB3 to it - and at that time, presumably to Blitz as well.
