I mainly knew him from his work as Doink. Heel Doink in 1992 was pretty fantastic, with the stump puller and the evil clown music.

A couple of tweaks and Doink was essentially the Joker, and Bourne did a great job of playing up Doink's crazy side.

I think all the criticism you mention is aimed purely at the midget-sidekicked babyface Doink from the latter years. Original evil clown Doink is almost universally praised from what I've seen over the years, and still holds up to this day.
