Expos reach deal for Gonzalez
Slugger `in all likelihood' will reject trade
The Associated Press
Originally published June 25, 2003

NEW YORK - The Montreal Expos reached agreement Tuesday to acquire two-time AL MVP Juan Gonzalez from Texas -but his attorney said the Rangers star "in all likelihood" would reject the trade.

Montreal general manager Omar Minaya, who has a long history with Gonzalez, was to meet with the slugger Wednesday in Texas.

Gonzalez has 72 hours to exercise his no-trade clause. His window of decision begins at 10 a.m. EDT Wednesday.

The 33-year-old outfielder did not play Tuesday night in Texas' 7-6 win at home over Oakland. He declined comment before the game.

"After some thought and reflection, Juan is going to stand by his no-trade clause and reject the trade to Montreal - in all likelihood," attorney Jeff Moorad said at The Ballpark in Arlington.

Moorad added that when Gonzalez signed a two-year contract with the Rangers before the 2002 season, he took less money "because he and his family felt comfortable in Texas."

What an idiot. Possibly the last chance for a title and he rejects it out of hand because of the comfort of his family. I understand the guy being concerned about his family; that's important. But to reject a trade on that ground is just ludcirous.

The only other reason I can think that Igor should reject this trade is that there is a better deal(Oakland? Florida?) out there on the table somewhere.

I agree...he's a major league ballplayer, he's gone half of the time anyway. A three month rental to a contending team (who also has six games left in his native Puerto Rico) wouldn't be ALL that bad.

For my first post in many weeks, I shall say this;

WHAT A TOOL.

The Expos are in the hunt, and who wouldn't want to be in the same outfield as Vlad? Plus the aformentioned six games in his home country. I fail to see how he'd NOT want to get in on the action at the Big O.

Besides, it's not as if the Rangers are going to keep the guy anyways.

That stuff about his family is a line of crap. McGriff tried this same thing two years ago when he was traded from Tampa Bay. It's all about the money. Juan wants a long-term big money contract and the Expos(MLB) can't possibly agree to that.

If I'm Texas and Juan is costing us good prospects(Vargas) be rejecting the trade, I'm not happy. I'd tell Juan we are conceding the season and going with a youth movement. Let him spend the rest of his contract year buried on the bench and see how little money he gets in the off-season.

Let's not overlook the most amazing part of this.....MONTREAL is making a mid-season deal to improve itself. Geez, first Colon last year and now this; MLB are betters owners than Loria ever was.
