This is a question I have been pondering for a long time. Why does everyone in Boston talk about the curse, and bemoan the fact that their beloved Red Sox haven't won a World Series since 1918, and other people around the country talk about it all the time as well? Here in Chicago, we have not one, but 2 teams that have gone longer than that! And I know, people everywhere talk about the Cubs the same way.

But how come, my favorite team, the White Sox, aren't talked about in the same way? We haven't even BEEN to a World Series since 1959. At least the Red Sox were in it in '86. Can anyone explain all the pity heaped on the Red Sox and Cubs, without any of it going to the White Sox?

1) The White Sox played in a dump in old Comiskey Park, and the last of the bad ballparks built in the new Comiskey Park, so, people from other areas don't make pilgrimages to visit their ballpark like people do to Fenway and Wrigley.
2) The Red Sox are talked about because since their last World Series, they have been to 4 Series, all 7 game affairs. Thus, they have been within inches of winning on numerous occassions, only to fall short.
3) The Cubs are the professional losers of baseball. Throw in day games, and people like the Cubs.
4) Tough to feel sorry for a team that threw a World Series.

#1 - Selling Babe Ruth to the Yankees to put on an off-Broadway production. Harry Frazee, rot in hell.

From The Baseball Library:

The man who sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees for $100,000 and a $300,000 loan, Frazee was a theatrical producer who bought the World Champion Red Sox for $400,000 in 1917 and sold the last-place team for $1.5 million in 1923. Often when he needed money to cover his theatrical investments, he would sell off his best players, frequently to the Yankees. In the middle of the 1919 season, he sold pitcher Carl Mays, who had left the team, to New York. AL president Ban Johnson voided the deal, insisting Mays should have been suspended and not available for sale or trade. The Yankees went to court and won, causing a rift between club owners that was not healed until Johnson resigned nine years later. Meanwhile, Frazee had contributed Everett Scott and Herb Pennock to the budding Yankee dynasty.

And that my friend is reason #1 and it's really the only reason you need. Since Frazee sold Ruth to the Yankees, the Sox have not won.

Hey, you wouldn't say that if you saw "No No Nanette".

Seven years later, and both the White Sox and Red Sox have won the World Series. (Boston, in fact, has won it twice.) Still no championship for the Cubbies, but to be honest, if they won it, I'd start looking for other signs of the apocalypse as well. I'm pretty sure seeing Bret Hart hug Shawn Michaels on RAW is an example.
