New FOund Glory covered a couple of songs from some 80's movies. Glory of Love - Peter Cetera, Neverending Story - Limhal(sp?), Goonies are Good Enough - Cyndie Lauper..
Goldfinger has some too. Joe Jackson's - Is She Really Going Out With Him, Nena's - 99 Red Balloons, Duran Duran's - Rio
Lemonheads have a good cover of Luka
If you ever saw the movie Donnie Darko, there is a killer cover of Tears For Fears' - Mad World
Minor Threat's cover of The Monkees "Stepping Stone" is good.
I don't know what type of music you like, but these slant towards Pop/Punk, except for the Tears For Fears cover.

Anyways, there is pretty much a cover to any song out there, ranging from really crappy punk covers to techno/euro dance to straight forward exact duplicates. some of the favorites for the show were...
Happy Hardcore - Neverending Story: Euro dance cover, really poppy and dancable.
Diva - Sun Always Shines On TV: originally by A-Ha this version has a more upbeat drumline and no guitar.
Apotheosis - O Fortuna: Taken from Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, This is an industrial cover(arrangement... whatever!) that is super kick ass.
Laibach - Like A Prayer: German industrial group that is rather well known for doing covers. They've also done Europe's Final Countdown, Prince's The Kiss, Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar, the Beatles entire Let It Be album... Classic stuff! Also, they do a german version of Queen's One Vision that is funny as hell.
Barbara Streisand - Life On Mars?: YES!!! Babs doing Bowie... does it get any better than that. O had this on vinyl but it's since been lost during my move from Seattle a few years ago. I really miss it. I'v tried EVERYWHERE to get another copy, but most people never even knew about it.
Dwight Yoakam - Train In Vein: Very odd cover, I can't tell if I hate it or if I like it better then the Clash version.
Wall of Voodoo - Ring Of Fire: This was originally done for a porno if I remember right. This has a psychedelic sound.
Mojo Nixon - Girlfriend in a Coma: Everyone does better versions of Smiths songs then the Smiths did.
Cake - I Will Survive: They take this disco classic and make it better then ever.

-Earlier Jobber mentioned the "Mad World" cover, which is stunningly good. The artist is Gary Jules.
-Being an obsessive stalker-like Tori Amos fan, I hunt down her covers like mad. While she's got oodles of them, a couple which are just perfect are her covers of "Lovesong" by the Cure, "Landslide" by Fleetwood Mac, "Smells Like Teen Spirit", and "River" by Joni Mitchell.
-Somewhere floating around on KaZaa is a swank version of "Throw Your Arms Around Me" done by Crowded House and Eddie Vedder, the original being done by Hunters and Collectors.
-If anyone can find a bootleg of the Flaming Lips version of "Can't Get You Out of My Head" you'll find yourself unable to ever listen to Kylie in the same way again. Let's just call this the funeral dirge version.
-Red House Painters do a version of "All Mixed Up" which you may or may not have heard in a Gap ad a while back. They actually improve on the original Cars version IMHO.
-I'm not sure its officially released yet, but Robbie Fulks makes "Billie Jean" sound just a bit different than the original

Lemonheads - Mrs. Robinson -- a perfectly acceptable 90s powerpop rendition.
Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies - anything -- these guys do great things for 70s shlock and showtunes.
Scooter and Fozzy - Simon Smith and his Amazing Dancing Bear -- written by Randy Newman, redone by Harry Nillson. Scooter and Fozzy do the best version as far as I'm concerned.
Type O Negative - Cinnamon Girl -- Neil Young rocks it always and forever, but this is cover is heavy.
Ramones - I Don't Wanna Grow Up -- the only widely known cover of a Tom Waits song I can stand. Only the Ramones could have done it this way.
Ednaswap - Torn -- This is like an inverted cover: Natalie Imbruglia turned it into an upbeat catchy-pop-tune-thing. But the original is much more suited to the nature of the lyrics.
And the worst cover I've ever heard? Phil Collins doing "Somewhere" from West Side Story. When I heard this track I honestly expected Leonard Bernstein to rise from the grave and exact terrible and messy revenge on Phil Collins. Check out Tom Waits' version from Blue Valentines.

Lyle Lovett - Friend of the Devil -- a very soulful remake. I'd also add most of the rest of the stuff on Deadicated, but Lyle's remake is my favorite.

The worst I've ever heard? Omen doing a 90 second thrash version of Beth. Of course, Gwar doing an interesting version of Send in the Clowns may also deserve mention.

Somebody mentioned Type O Negative's rendition of Cinnamon Girl, well, they've actually got a handful of great covers. On their "Least Worst Of" album, they have a cover of Black Sabbath with reworked lyrics ("sung from the perspective of Lucifer," sayeth the liner notes, I think it was also on a Black Sabbath tribute album), plus "Hey Pete," a version of Hendix' Hey Joe, also with retooled lyrics (basically, Pete Steele is singing to himself in a hilarious turn of events). They also do a fun cover of The Beatles' Daytripper.
I also dig Slayer's 5-minute version of Inna-Gadda-Da-Vida, from the soundtrack of some movie I never saw thus forgot the name of.
I personally like Motorhead's version of "Enter Sandman" (from the ECW soundtrack from a few years ago) better than I like Metallica's. Also on that album, Anthrax's version of Phantom Lord and Bruce Dickinson's version of "The Zoo," by the Scorpions. In other wrestling-related music news, I like Fozzy a whole lot and think their covers of Balls to the Wall and Livewire rock!
As for worst cover, like I said, I don't like cover songs in general (despite that lengthy diatribe I just made you sit through), but I believe that Glenn Tipton's version of "Paint it Black" is just so bad and pointless that it deserves honorable mention. And I love the guy!

Reposted on: 21.12.09 0941.05 | There's a CD called "Punk Goes Pop" out there. It's a bunch of, well, mediocre pop-punk bands doing awesome covers of teenybopper pop songs from the last few years. I've never heard Pink's "Get This Party Started" sound better, and they actually turned that Jennifer Lopez/Ja Rule song into a really great track.
And, of course, if you've still never heard The Gourds' cover of "GIn And Juice" which is floating all over the Internet, well, you definitely owe it to yourself. (If you can't find it, almost everyone credits it to the Barenaked Ladies.)
The absolute worst cover in the history of time is on the Door's tribute album "Stoned Immaculate". Most of the CD is great - seeing as it's the surviving members of the Doors working with the likes of Ian Astbury and Scott Weiland (even the Creed track is decent.). But, Train does a cover of "Light My Fire" that proves there is no god.
(EDIT: Oh, and most anything from Johnny Cash's "American Recordings" albums are really fucking cool, too. Cash does Soundgarden. Cash does U2. Cash does Nine Inch Nails. It's incredible.)

Best being the previously mentioned "Leaving Here" (originally by High Numbers), the famous "Last Kiss" (originally by Wayne Cochran), and the not so famous "Crazy Mary" (originally by Victoria Williams). They also covered Bob Dylan's "Masters of War" for a tribute show that was quite good. In addition, there's a ton of covers from live shows that, even if you're fortunate enough to find, won't be great quality.

The Church did the Simon/Garfunkel chestnut "I am a Rock". That too, wasn't very good.
The only thing worse than Rod Stewart's originlas are his covers. "Havin' a Party"??, "Your Song"?? "Downtown Train"!?!?!?
What an Australian 70s throwback relic could possibly do to improve on Sam and Dave, or Tom Waits, or even early Elton John is beyond me.
