Seeing both made me a lil' queasy to be the game show fan that I am.

Real quick BG info about the following -- usually distribution companies send their shows two days in advance (with day/date shows being exceptions, of course)... so series/season premieres feed on Thursdays.

So...

Off to find at least one of the new shows... and I find a Feud second-run feed. Great! Burton's still announcing, they've got a revamped set with a wide-screen projection screen for each family's name... they've gone with a maple-style set... and then Al Borland comes out.

I thought I'd never say this, but Richard Karn makes me want Louie back. For fans of the game and not the host, winning families can return as champion, which means it's back to episodic television for them. *JOY*

Then, I find a Pyramid feed later in the afternoon...

Donny does ok as a host, and I'm cool with the Millionaire ripoff set. The music/graphics are ehh... but what gets me most is the Winner's Circle.

Earlier, when the show was being pitched... one idea was that a contestant could win 100K... but would have to win four main games and four WC's to win it all. No misses. NOW... a contestant has to win both maingames and endgames in a show just to be in a tourney for a chance to win 100K. Winning both WC's in a show does get you $25K, btw.

Oh -- and according to their site, the celebs switch every day, so there's no returning champ, no episodic format. Sucky balls on this! Hell, the $10K Pyramid format was one loss and gone... but don't penalize the winner for not winning a WC. Make them go 10-20-30-40... a four WC max, and they can still win $100K.

You ask why I'm persnickety about episodic formats? Simple -- drama, baby. Tic Tac Dough with Thom McKee was the shit just because you wanted to watch how far he went until he lost.

I'm still searching for a Syndie Millionaire feed, but most likely, I'll have to wait until Monday for that. Oh yeah -- before I go -- let me pimp Weakest Link's season premiere, Sept. 23rd!

Holy crap, I remember this! Wasn't he the guy who REALLY needed to stop choosing "6" first during the bonus round?

Hopefully, these won't be anywhere near the complete and utter misery known as the new Card Sharks. Really, were they thinking people would throw Family Feud comparisons their way? We already have an infinitely "what'll they say?" syndie show... it's called STREET SMARTS. -_-

I saw the commercial for the new FF with Karn and I was convinced I was in the middle of a bad dream. I miss Richard Dawson. Hell, I miss Ray Combs! Dawson was the king of mixing game show goodness and all-American lechery. My fiancee is quite creeped out by the kisses he gives the women when we watch it on Game Show Network.

Game shows will never be as cool as they were in the 70's and 80's. Computers and fancy graphics have ruined it all. What happened to bright neon lights, cool sound effects, and crappy suits? I haven't gotten a chance to watch TPIR in a long time, but I loved it when they played a pricing game and there was a problem with something breaking on the set (I seem to remember this often with Cliff Hanger, Lucky Seven and any game where one Barker's airheads couldn't open up the price of something).

I watched the new Family Feud once, and I noticed everything cool about that show had been sucked out and replaced with video screens and Louie Anderson. The old flipboard was awesome and should NEVER have been replaced.

I haven't seen the new Card Sharks, but if it doesn't have Jim Perry running in like he just jogged 10 minutes to the studio, it ain't shit.

Louie Anderson really is not needed for much of anything.

And to make things worse I saw the new version of Press Your Luck. 3D whammies was kind of amusing by they completley fricked up the board by having it be two circles rather than the square board. I mean criminy...

To answer a couple of things:

Jay -- "Street Smarts" is also known as... "Jaywalking." Don't get me wrong... Frank Nicotero's great... but prediction games go *way* back.

CRZ -- It's about *frickin* time you have Yugi as an avatar. You're remembering more about Thom than I do... but IIRC, he went to the bonus round enough times that he probably did pick 6 too many times.

Shotgun -- The latest and worst incarnation of CS was a mix of CS and Street Smarts. There was one line of seven cards played the old hi-lo way. To change a card, you had to use a "Clip Chip" and predict an outcome of a situation a la SS. It was pretty god-awful... and Pat Bullard's not the best host for it, plus he didn't turn any cards.

Wait until November sweeps when the old LED scoring for Jeopardy! goes. It's basically come down to TPiR for being the only show to use anything old school.

Finally, got a chance to see the Millionaire Creative Services Reel. If Meredith Vierea's wild lines are any indication, they REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEALLY need Reege, stat.

Oh trust me. It was shit. Nothing but.

I had exactly one problem with Louie's "Feud"...They had like two $20,000 winners a month this past season. Aside from that, I thought it was a great version of the show. I liked the set, I liked the host.

I am really looking forward to "Pyramid", my all-time favorite game show. And we're getting it back-to-back with the excellent "Weakest Link".

Did I ever mention how I used to hate George Gray with a passion due to "Extreme Gong," then find out he's that damn good when he finds the right vehicle?

Anne who? I'm curious to see how the first couple of shows are paced, since a round's being dropped (25K tops for four rounds, and head-to-head).

If you're curious about Jeopardy's changes, btw, look on alt.tv.game-shows.

Well, I thought he was OK on Junkyard Wars. Don't know how well that show's gonna do without Cathy, though. She carried it.

Any suggestions for those of us who don't get Usenet? I only know of deja.com, and the last time I used it was three years ago.

the plinko chips still get stuck every now and then, and there's the occasional slip up where they reveal a price because something gets stuck...

Yeah, I remember them having to retire a couple of games (don't remember them offhand, but gscentral.net should have them) because they just wouldn't work right. Shame, too... some of them were pretty cool.

They could have fixed that just by randomizing the damn board, instead of having just six light patterns. I admit to not knowing how the board was programmed, though.

They DID fix it by adding more light patterns to the board (too many to memorize) after Larson's run. It's a good thing they did, too, because they noticed that there were some people who came on the show playing as if the old six patterns were still there.

And I have a hard time believing ANYONE could be worse than Louie Anderson. At least Richard Karn's voice doesn't make me want to punch him in the voicebox.

Don't get me wrong -- I want Richard to succeed, but I must grudgingly agree with Jonathon Goodson when he said that a show like that needs someone that can extraneously speak well... and actors usually can't do that.

When you think about it, radio djs, weather anchors/meterologists and comedians do best at hosting, because they can ad-lib the best. Then again, on the flipside, Pat Sajak in Airplane 2 wasn't Oscar material.
GSN's got a Gambit-style (blackjack) game called Casino coming up... Ron Pearson's hosting. He's been overlooked for some hosting duties in the past. He made Shopping Spree bearable.
