Is the Rock even on this list? Did he not wrestle enough to qualify?

I love some of these indy names. My favourite is Jaguar Vijay Singh...presumably he's in a big-time feud with Annika Sorenstam.

I dunno.... this whole list really lost its purpose (to me anyways) once we were left with only one major North American fed, and maybe two or three groups of above-indy-level quality.

When the first one came out (I'm thinking early 90's, but I could be wrong on that), you had the three big companies, a few semi-big ones and enough independent talent that could possibly contain future world champions. It was interesting to see how they all placed, even if you accepted the premise that all of it was a sham anyways. Now.... ehh. When 15 of the top 20 work for the same company, it doesn't really make for a tremendous comparison.

Still, I'm sure Mr. and Mrs. Hallowicked are thrilled that their little boy has finally hit the spotlight, and it's still a nice way to give the nod to so many of those who wouldn't normally be recognized at all....

"244. Mark Henry"

Wow, I didn't know Stagger Lee had that much stroke with Apter.
At least on a quick glance, I can't see any other WWE wrestlers below him, so I'll forgive them for putting Henry above Rory Fox.

Also worth noting is that The Rock's WrestleMania opponent this year, Stone Cold Steve Austin, didn't make the list either. In fact, unless my eyes are deceiving me (which is quite possible, considering the length of the list and the age of my eyes) neither Vince McMahon nor Hulk Hogan, who also had a match at WrestleMania XIX, made the list. Add in Roddy Piper (who did a run-in during the above mentioned McMahon/Hogan match) and you've got five wrestlers who performed at WrestleMania this year (in addition to other WWE Pay-Per-Views) yet didn't make the PWI's Top 500 list. (Did anyone spot any others? And do those who have followed this list through the years know if that's a record?) Anyway, to get back to Big Bad's question, the omission of The Rock (along with Austin, Hogan, McMahon and Piper) can't reasonably be blamed on insufficient ring time, especially when you consider that William Regal is on the list as number 67.

Edge is also somewhere fairly high on that list (I can't be bothered to go back and find him)...I think they explain it that their 500 year runs from August to August, so if a guy gets hurt or becomes inactive in February or March he's still got seven months or so of time during that year. Rocky only had maybe two months in that span and probably had fewer matches than Eric Bischoff or Jim Ross so you can't really count him. Besides, The Rock is The Rock, but let's be honest, he's no William Regal.

I think it is based on kayfabed success, so, win/loss record, titles held, quality of opposition, variety of opposition etc. but not workrate or talent or however you want to phrase it.

so Big show for instance has held the WWE title and beaten Lesnar, so he get's ranked highly. His losses were probably against top stars so they don't hurt him too much.

Booker T, John Cena and the Hurricane have pinned Triple H, Undertaker and Rock respectively so they rank higher than their midcard status would suggest.

It's hard to really keep track of how wrestlers have done in these terms over the course of a year so who knows whether it's accurate or not, but the list seems plausible enough by this criteria.

I bought the magazine and am looking through it right now. Shark-Boy's little bio actually mentions the time he wrestled a dark match before Smackdown here in Pittsburgh right before Wrestlemania and the crowd chanted for him all night. I'm so proud.

They are smoking better pot than I am putting Steiner that high on the list (they must have had a flashback to 1993!)
and after 350 the list is of guys 3 people have seen wreslte in a bar. it's always been contrived and out of balance, but this year it's just so down the tubes it's noteven funny.

PWI has always been a bit Markish and Steiner did headline 2 PPVs in a row, which should make him near the top of the list.

Wasn't it recently discovered that PWI's staff is really just two guys who use a bunch of fake names to make it seem like they have tons of writers? I have little respect for PWI's opinion of anything, especially when this list comes out each year.

How can they rank all the indy wrestlers, when there's no possible way they (and all their friends) could have seen them wrestle.

And for the record, I bet guys like the Rock have wrestled more matches this year than some of the indy guys.

I think the 500 is good for one reason, it gives just a little exposure to and indy wrestler, and in a round about way to an indy fed. If someone who is in to the big promotion reads this and sees a wrestler ranked kind of high, than sees they wrestle in an indy promotion close to their home, they may go see that promotion. Then that promotion has a 50/50 shot of picking up a new fan. I'm sure we are all for this happening for our favorite indies.

(Unless your favorite indy doesnt have anybody ranked like thay did last year, even though some guys in your indy have wrestled on TNA and have also been wrestling on TNA Xplosion for awhile grumble grumble grumble.......GO SEE GCW out of St. Louis)

Tell me there really is a wrestler called the Codfather (418) and that isn't just at typo...

And what do you mean by Dill DeMott(93)?

How did Prince Nana (259) get such high recognition?

From the actual magazine:
418 THE CODFATHER
(6', 225, 3, 451) Still attracts a cult following in Ontario's Apocalypse Wrestling Federation ... Wears full fishing gear to the ring and carries a fishing pole and a tackle box ... Hails from Newfoundland ... Also known by his real name, Billy Flynn ... Trained by Ron Hutchinson ... Joined Danny Dynamic and Jimmy Snuka Sr. to wallop Joey Knight, Arizona and Zaquary Springate III in February ... His favorite holds are the lobster trap and the Boston Crab ... Vows he could kick look-a-like Tom Green's "skinny ass".
