Now you've probably noticed that I've made the link submission icons a little more visible on the thread pages. We've had some interesting and wildly varying results with a few people suggesting links from the board to the various social networking/bookmarking sites, and now it's time to get more of you to jump on board. It costs you nothing but a few seconds, and will really help us bring more eyeballs to the board (and, who knows, MAYBE one or two pairs of eyeballs will belong to people who actually register and make posts of their own!)

The key to these sites is, the more "votes" they get, the more exposure they get, so even if someone has already submitted a thread, feel free to add your own thumbs up because more people will look at something with ten yes votes than one yes vote. Or so they say.

Here are the sites we currently provide links for - click on the icons to be taken to their registration page if you would like to give it a go:

- Digg - digg.com - probably the largest social bookmarking site as of right now. If you're ever bored, click on their spyglass (digg.com) and you'll find something to read within about thirty seconds. If you only join ONE of these places, let's make it this one, because I believe it could potentially bring the most people to the site. We also already have three or four people submitting threads to Digg (for which I thank them!)

- Netscape - netscape.com - I wasn't paying attention to when they became a portal, but they've attracted a few disguntled Digg users and pay them to keep more interesting content at the top. The current advantage Netscape has for people who provide content because there are so many less links fighting for votes as there are with, say, Digg, is it takes a lot less votes to stay near the top of the page - downside is there are fewer people looking, but with ebb and flow it's hard to say this won't change later. I'm currently on here plugging the DVD threads on movies.netscape.com just for grins.

- Reddit - reddit.com - a lot like Digg - a lot of links, links drop pretty fast without votes, not as much "fun" as Digg in my experience...but maybe I'm using it wrong

- Newsvine - newsvine.com - New kid on the block last year, don't know if anyone's really using it, but it does have a rather involved interface. You can set up your own feeds - mine is http://crz.newsvine.com/ f'rinstance.

- FARK.com - Actually, I don't know anything about this one. Ask Alessandro. All I know is when we DO get linked from them, we get A LOT of hits...and then I yell at Alessandro. I don't know if we really have anything to offer them, but if you think we do, submit away!

- FURL - furl.net - I don't know if we've ever gotten a hit from it, but you can store bookmarks for yourself here and then share them with others.

- del.icio.us - another bookmarking site - another place I don't think we've ever gotten a hit, but another useful place to stash bookmarks of things you may want to find later - I'm keeping the DVD threads at http://del.icio.us/kzim, for instance

- MSN's Live.com favorites - favorites.live.com - I've never used this, so I can tell you nothing about it. I must have just stolen their code from somebody else or something.

- Yahoo!'s My Web 2.0 - myweb.yahoo.com - again, no clue - it's all clicks and whistles

- Google Bookmarks - google.com/bookmarks - guess what - I don't know anything about this one, either

So (as DEAN would say) there you have it. At the VERY least, now you at least know what all those little icons represent.

You can probably tell I've arranged the site icons in order of "most importance" starting with the left, so feel free to work your way as far to the right as you'd like.

Again, don't feel like you HAVE to do this either - it's all one big social experiment, sure, but not participating as just as valid a choice as any other. But I know there are a few of you who want to "do your part" for the board, but not necessarily go shopping or look at a bunch of ads, and maybe this is a way for you to spread the word about the board and maybe, just maybe, make the Internet a better place. Or...at least a place where more people are unnecessarily exposed to THIS place. ;-)

If it's possible, a page listing all of the threads which have been dugg (or otherwise) might be useful. I might not think to submit a certain thread, but if I saw that someone else had done it then I'd most likely add my vote in too.

We kinda have something like that already with the referral tracker. In addition to the default of http://the-w.com/referrals.php, every thread page that shows referrals should have a link to referrals for THAT thread right above the thread table - clicking on that referrals link should tell you where the referrals are from. I realise that's asking you to jump through a hoop or two, though - maybe I can come up with something more useful/clever in the future.

To submit to Fark, you go to
http://cgi.fark.com/cgi/fark/submit.pl
You have to a username with Fark to do this.

That goes into some kind of backstage area, where only paid members (TotalFark) can see and discuss them.

Some sort of moderator decides which links are worthwhile of going to the main page. Suggestions for improving your odds are at http://www.fark.com/farq/submit.shtml

So basically, if you think it's an interesting thread, submit it to Fark with a funny headline, and if the moderators agree, it will show up on the main page, where millions of people will click it.

Just found Digg last night via "You Don't Know Jack"...totally fell in love with the concept. Really can keep you connected to events everywhere in the world and the web.

Do I just have to click the icons or have accounts set up with the corresponding links for it to work?

For most of them, you'll have to be registered AND logged in, I believe.
