I figured this for a thread here already (ah, Grimis, I miss ya buddy).

If you don't know already, His Obamaness was on Leno last night (because that's where you go to fix the economy) and was talking with Jay about his bowling game. and this is what came out

Originally posted by the London Telegraph

Thats very good, Mr President, Mr Leno interjected in a sarcastic tone.

Mr Obama then countered that the score was like the Special Olympics or something.

So, I guess that doesn't mean much to most, but with special needs kids around, I think it's a bit not so nice to rip on them like that.

Then I got a twitter feed from the Onion today that said:

BREAKING: Obama On Special Olympics Gaffe: "Sorry, I Acted Like A Retard"

I laughed. I shouldn't have, but I laughed. A lot.

The funny part to me was last night all three major news sites has their top story as his Leno appearance. CNN and MSNBC didn't mention that joke, while on Fox the joke was the focal point, going so far as to question his ability to lead.

Me, I think it's pretty absurd that it's even a news story. That's not to say a few people weren't offended, but come on. Not deserving of the attention it got.

I am NOT a fan of Obama's, but I have to ask: Did Bush's repeated vacations to Crawford draw this sarcastic tone from you? I don't seem to remember it.

What, exactly, do you propose he be doing instead, seeing as how apparently he is 24 hours a day supposed to be "fixing the economy"? Should he have been sitting in the Oval Office playing with a calculator? What should he have been doing at that precise moment that going on Leno stopped him from doing? I'd say being accessible to the American public is an important part of Obama's role in "fixing the economy," and appearing on TV shows is the primary way to maintain that accessibility.

They all reported on it before it aired?

The "joke" made the NBC Nightly News tonight (reported but not shown), along with Obama's apology (ditto).

Actually, Olbermann mentioned it on his show last night even before it aired.

I'm guessing that if someone is outraged at Obama, but laughed at the Onion - that's more a function of where they're coming from politically.. but then I feel like the GOP in general has become "the opposition who cried wolf". By jumping on every little thing, they will only lessen the impact/mileage on those issues they might get actual traction on.

(And commenting on political threads probably doesn't do any of our Instant Ratings any good. Heh.)

Wow, a great point of the caliber you can generally be expected to produce. Surely even you can understand why ignoring Bush's vacation habits while criticizing Obama for not working hard enough detracts from someone's credibility.

It just struck me as an incredibly silly reason to hate on Obama when there are so many legitimate reasons to do so.

The news networks have already taken sides on this administration. If it were Bush's gaffe, NBC would have exploited it and Fox would have ignored it. This is just the news world that we live in.

I agree - not news.

The only thing I found sad about this is that 127 is about my best score too. I'm not much of a bowler.

I didn't think your comparison of apples to oranges merited a serious response beyond the rolling of my eyes. Still don't, actually. But I've posted the DVD thread so let's kill a little time, why not.

1. Bush never went on The Tonight Show, so when would a thread have been started about it?

2. If you look at the title of the thread, AWA makes it pretty clear what he is posting about. Hint: it's not the parenthetical you LEAPT upon and the sole topic of your entire post. Now, using administrator magic, I divined that your direction was not a productive one, and not one I wanted to see pursued on the board, so you got the expected response from me in an attempt to shut it down. As you can see, I have succeeded wildly beyond all expectations. Deleting posts is easier and perhaps a better pre-emptive strike, but doesn't give me the opportunity for self-aggrandizement we all know I crave. Nonetheless, I promise I'll give deletion more consideration next time.

All three networks had it as their main web page story by the time I got home from work last night(5pm C). Surprised me too.

We have ratings?

I'm so not even gonna bother to look.

SO making fun of congress is worse than making fun of the handicapped?

Anyway, while I have no problem with what he said (people are too sensitive), I do have a problem with him basically trying to remain a "STAR" when he should be running the country.

If Bush makes the commnet, the left is going 'Bush couldn't qualify for Special Olympics.' Only reason this is more than a blip is because the country has gone beyond politically correct. and this is what happens when you make everyone an interest group.
Only thing this might show about the secular messiah's Presidency is that he is much weaker when you take him off the teleprompter, which might come into play when decisions are made.
As for the economy: One of the main reasons for us going into the death spiral is the head of the Fed has always been terrified of the Great Depression occurring and would rather have Weimar Germany of the 1920's with money worth nothing than the 1930's reoccurring. Main problem with that is he taking the French of the 1930's philosophy of fighting the previous war with the Maginot Line, and not realizing that the US economy if vastly different now than 70 years ago, thus what might have worked then will actually be a negative now.

The only reason this is more than a blip is that the economy is complicated but a good fake controversy is much, much easier to talk about.

Making fun of the mentally challenged is, to use AWArulz's phrase, a bit not so nice. But I wouldn't call it worse than making fun of the special olympics.

Sorry to deconstruct this too much, but it seems like he was making fun of himself with the comment. However, the implication from the comment is that it's assumed that bowling scores in the Special Olympics (do they even have that as a sport?) would be fairly poor, thus the insult.

Regardless of where you fall on the political spectrum, it's an awkward comment for the POTUS to make. I credit it to inexperience and lack of realization that he can NEVER let his guard down. It's about the same as the time on the campaign last year when he called a reporter "Sweetie" and had to apologize for that. We all talk like that here and there, but President Obama won't have that luxury for the next eight years. He'll get better, but this won't be the last gaffe he makes.

It's not nice to make jokes about mentally handicapped people, but I'm not saying people with down syndrome, autism, etc., can't put two and two together and get what's being said. However, Nobody with down syndrome, autism, etc., has come forth and decried this. Who's worse; the asshole who makes a joke about retarded people or the asshole who tells retarded people to be unhappy for it because they're retarded and not taking their feelings into consideration?

And, as a note, I do have family that is mentally handicapped, and he hates being treated differently, most of all by other people who don't even know him unnecessarily trying to come to his aid as if he couldn't accomplish certain tasks by himself. Try as I might, he still calls me a bastard whenever I tell him to take advantage of stupid people.

On that note, this is a huge verbal gaffe on behalf of the PotUS. Maybe not the biggest this decade by a President (read: MISSION ACCOMPLISHED), but big regardless.

No, but material from it are available to news sources before the airing, especially when a newsworthy person is a guest. And if you work for NBC, at least in LA, you can watch the show live in the Burbank complex.
