I have a problem. Three times now, my dvd rom has been 'uninstalled'.
Each time reinstalling the driver had not fixed the problem, and I have only been successful in getting it to work, by doing a system recovery.

The system restore will not work. Each time I try, it tells me there was an unspecified error.

This has happened each time after I had done a live update via Norton Antivirus that is supposed to update the virus definitions and any other system issues. (I am buying Macaffee today)

Now, I've backed up my data (finally got a external hard drive). I want to do ANOTHER system recovery and start from scratch yet again.

After I do that, how do I use my backed up files to import the info I want, without having it reset my computer to where the dvd rom is uninstalled, or not recognized again?

I've never backed up files before, and never had to use the feature, so I am unsure as to what I am doing.

Are you sure you don't want to do a clean install? It sounds like it might be getting to the point where you are having compounding problems...

I have not used system recovery. I'm either lucky that I don't cause issues that need it, or I'm too impatient and have always just reformatted. I'm not sure which it is, either

It seems the ONLY issue is that the DVD ROM gets uninstalled. I have tried to reinstall it by itself and it wont. I have tried to restore the system, and it wont restore. So, I have done the recovery and reset it to the original factory settings, and everything works fine.

I dont think I will ever enable the norton again, because every time I've used it to update automatically, this happens. But, the DVD is the ONLY thing effected.

Maybe its just a vista quirk, I dont know.

Ok, in doing a quick search of the Vista newsgroups you are not the only one having this problem.

I see two others who were using Norton 360 and had to uninstall it to get their DVD drive back. It was also causing problems with restarting or shutting down. I also saw someone with Norton Systemworks 2005 with the problem.

One person said they updated the firmware for the DVD drive and it fixed the issue for them. Another pointed to this KB article:;en-us;320553

Which may or may not be the same thing you have. It's basically the upper/lower filters thing which may have already been posted in a previous thread.

I know it says XP but it's probably worth a try if the other stuff doesn't help.

Definatly check for updated firmware for the drive if you haven't. Norton tends to do horrible things to PC's from my experience so this isn't suprising. If the firmware doesn't work, uninstall Norton and make sure you got it all. Norton's website has a removal tool if it's needed.
