College basketball junkies are psyched today as teams are allowed to begin practice some time around 8:00 pm local time - meaning that Midnight Madness is now evening madness.

In the Commonwealth many eyes will be on Lexington as UK kicks off the year with a full house at Rupp Arena. 21,000 tickets were given away in around 30 minutes and all 23,000 tickets were claimed. Even though tickets were free, some have sold on E-Bay for up to $100.

The 'Cats look to rebound after a disappointing 22-13 campaign that saw their first ever finish outside the top 2 in the SEC east, a semifinal loss in the SEC tournament and a second round loss to UConn in the NCAAs.

The Wildcats lost Patrick Sparks, Brandon Stockton, Preston LeMaster, and Ravi Moss to graduation. The 'Cats also lost Rajon Rondo to the NBA, Rekalin Sims, Shagari Alleyne and Adam Williams to transfers.

A lot of hopes are pinned on incoming freshmen guards Derrick Jasper and Jodie Meeks, with great future hopes from Modesto, California's Michael Porter (he's from Chuck Hayes' HS where his father was the coach). Many will also be interested in 6'9" forward Perry Stevenson - a shot blocking, floor running, slam dunking PF whose greatest shortcoming is his lack of bulk. Reports out of Lexington indicate that new strength coach Scott Holsopple has already added around 20 pounds of muscle to Stevenson's frame.

Cat fans have huge hopes for juniors Randolph Morris, Ramel Bradley, and Joe Crawford. Senior Bobby Perry had an awesome NCAA tourney run while great improvement is hoped for from fellow seniors Sheray Thomas and Lukasz Obrzut as well as 7'2" sophomore Jared Carter.

Also a huge night for Wildcat future as a host of primary recruiting targets are making their official visits and Wildcat Nation is praying for 3 specific verbal commitments this weekend.

12 hours and counting!

What does your favorite team do for Madness and what is their outlook this year?

GO BIG BLUE!

Washington and Washington State are having a women's volleyball match and the Midnight Madness is following it. I guess they are doing a dunk contest, some other skills contests including some that will involve the womens' hoops-team, and according to Lorenzo Romar, some displays of "non-basketball-related"-skills.

The Huskies are going to be REALLY young, probably with three freshmen and two sophomores starting. Spencer Hawes just had knee surgery and a couple of the other guys are nicked up going into the year, but I'd put them a solid third in the Pac-10 behind UCLA and Arizona. I think oppoents would be wise to catch them earlier than later.

Of course, the best team that will be on the floor that night will be done before the basketball even starts. Washington's women's volleyball team are the defending national champions and are currently the #5 team in the country.

Michigan doesn't have Midnight Madness, probably as a result of the annual outlook for the team being "not that great". We fans can dream, though.

Of course. Who didn't know that? And, of course, by that time, the #5 U-M men's ice hockey team will have opened their season against Alabama-Huntsville.

Obviously.

South Florida typically hosts midnight madness before a crowd of around 500 people, all of whom show up to the 30-minute practice session presumably because, for a change, they're guranteed to see the team not lose.
