Being a Blockbuster employee, I've had the opportunity to rent Monsters, Inc. on DVD before it was released to the general public. (Release date: Sept. 17). I've had it for about five days now, and I have to tell you, this movie is great. I daresay it's better than Toy Story and possibly Toy Story 2, and it's right up there with Shrek. Great movie, everyone should definitely see it.

The Monsters, Inc. DVD is loaded with special features, too. You get the hilarious outtakes, including the production of Put That Thing Back Where It Came From Or So Help Me. You get to see the brand-new Monsters, Inc. short, Mike's New Car-- a very funny three-minute short film featuring Mike and Sulley. (Both of these are also included in the VHS release).

And the DVD special features are deep. You get a little tour of Pixar Studios, meeting some of the brilliant minds behind the scenes. You find out how in the world they were able to do the incredible animation that you see in the film. There are art galleries galore, featuring everything from character art to architectural designs. You can learn about the problems inherent with animating the fur on Sulley's back (which is something, you may remember, that DreamWorks had problems with when they did Donkey in Shrek).

You can learn all about the entire developmental process of the movie, and even watch a story featuring the original concept of the movie (which turned out to be very different from the final product). You can view flyarounds from different locations in the movie such as downtown, Mike and Sulley's apartment, Monsters, Inc., the simulator room and Boo's room. (This part, in particular, is very nicely done-- in the apartment, we first are rotated all the way around the living room, then they go down the hall to Sulley's room.)

They have several different teasers and trailers for the movie (“maybe he read the instructions wrong with his ONE EYE!”) and even a scene in which they switch between fifteen or so different languages. You can also see For the Birds, which won an Academy Award in 2001 for Best Animated Short Film.

Overall, it's got hours upon hours of special features. And not to throw in a blatant plug here buuut... you can pre-order it, on DVD or VHS, at Blockbuster. You pay $24.99 and get a card that gives you one free rental a week for ten weeks. You can use the card on any VHS or DVD title, whether it's a new release or a Blockbuster Favorite. And when Monsters, Inc. comes out on Tuesday, it's yours free.

If you were to buy the DVD after it came out, it'd cost you $17.99. But if you pre-order it and even use the card three times, you're paying less than you would have if you waited. If you use it all ten times? Heck, at my store ten New Release rentals would cost you $39.80-- and that's not even including the free Monsters, Inc. movie you get on top of that. That's about a $60 value for less than half that.

I wouldn't be spending part of my free time to talk about the promotion if I didn't truly believe in it. Check it out sometime-- if you don't buy this movie, you're eventually going to regret it.

I remember when they announced the specs for this DVD, it was going be the most-loaded of all-time...

...And then they announced the specs for "Beauty And The Beast", which is going to be even bigger.

(And then "Star Wars - Episode II" and The Ridiculous Edition of "Lord of the Rings" are going to be even bigger still.)

Or you could always pre-order it from Disney and get your 4 free, beautiful lithographs! (Sorry, I work for Disney and had to at least try.) Damn you blockbuster, and your better deal!

I was horribly, HORRIBLY underwhelmed by Monsters Inc. I think it pales terribly to earlier Pixar pictures.

Not even Steve Buscemi and James Coburn can balance out the annoyance that is Billy Crystal.

I can't wait for this to come out. I loved the movie, and even have to admit that I loved "Boo." They did such a great job. I will be buying the DVD, but not from Blockbuster (I am a Rewards Gold member already, so they get enough of my money each month).

On a follow-up note...

Yesterday, on a somewhat slow Thursday night, I set an all-time personal presale record by pre-selling SIX copies of Monsters, Inc. My drawer made less than $500 overall, yet I managed to sell Monsters, Inc. at the average of one for every hour I worked (and that's not even taking off my thirty-minute lunch break).

I was truly ecstatic. You guys should've seen me last night, I was practically giddy with excitement. The goal set for me at the beginning of the night was two, and I destroyed that goal pretty decisively.

It seems to me that this man has a genuine love for his job. I know we don't work on commission at the Disney Store either, but there is definitely a good feeling to be had by talking some 10 or so people into buying something they might not have come in for, but walked out with nonetheless. Especially if they wanted it, anyhoo.

Nope, no commission. But yeah, Joe's right. It makes me feel really good about myself that I can sell so many in such a short period of time.

An update, by the way:

At the end of my Thursday-night shift, I taped my six card slips to the manager's pit (kind of like championship banners), so that the store manager would have to be both blind and stupid in order to miss them.

At the beginning of my Friday night (6-close) shift, Chief Assistant Manager Melisa Rump presented me with a $10 giftcard (bought by our Store Manager, Roy Smithson) in honor of the previous evening's accomplishment. (Perhaps I do get commission, after all.) When you consider that on a Thursday night I sold six Monsters, Inc. cards, that's quite good.

I went out on Friday night and sold ten. Whitney, a cute redhaired co-worker of mine, smiled and said with faux-jealousy, “Overachiever!” She's so cute. But hey, she managed to sell three herself. You'd think because she's so much cuter than I am, she'd absolutely destroy me in Monsters, Inc. card sales, but no. LOL...

On Saturday night (the last night I'd be able to do any pre-sales, since I had Sunday and Monday off and the movie will be released on Tuesday), I sold nine Monsters, Inc. cards. So for a Thursday-Friday-Saturday block, I sold 25. That has got to be a store record of some description.

Adding to this accomplishment is the fact that several of these sales were “hard-sales”. The hardest sale I scored was on Saturday night. I asked a gentleman who came in alone if he'd heard of our Monsters, Inc. card. He said no, and that he didn't want to hear about it. I said something like, “It's a really nice deal” (I don't remember exactly what I said) and he said, “OK, let's hear about it.” I launched into my description, giving him complete eye-contact and speaking in a calm and confident, yet firm, tone of voice. It really helps when you know what you're selling is one hell of a deal and one hell of a movie. If you're insincere, people are going to detect that. But if you've seen the movie and can talk about it with the utmost of confidence, it gives you plenty of credibility in the customer's eyes. And credibility, as you know, is the key to customer service.

Anyway. After I went through my sales pitch, the gentleman did a 180 and said, “Sounds like a great deal.” I then spoke my most important line of all, the closing-a-sale line: “Gonna go for it, then?” He said yes! Whoo. The guy came up to me not even wanting to hear about the Monsters, Inc. deal, and he walked out having reserved a copy of it. That really made me feel good.

There were even a couple of times on both Friday and Saturday in which I sold two Monsters, Inc. cards in two consecutive transactions. Almost makes me want to break out into a dance to the tune of M.C. Hammer's “U Can't Touch This”. (Almost.)

So for the Disney employees on this board, you can thank me for setting y'all up for what will certainly be a tremendous opening week for Monsters, Inc. Checks and gifts sent to my e-mail address are, of course, warmly appreciated. LOL!

It's possibly better than Toy Story 1 and 2 and "up there" with Shrek? PLEASE! Shrek is so totally overrated, the first 10 minutes was pretty funny then the rest of it was a snoozefest. Toy Story 1 and 2 and Monsters Inc, and that Ice Age movie are all WAY better than Shrek in my opinion.

i vote for Ice Age being the funniest of the bunch. I put Monsters, Inc. on in the store since it was a slow night last night, and man, it was a snoozefest...

My 4 year old couldn't sleep through the night for months after I took her to see Monsters Inc. and she didn't do too much better with Ice Age - I thought both stories had promise but came up short - visually they were both fun to watch but I won't be wasting any additional time or $$$ on the video or DVD for either movie

Well, all I can say is DEAR LORD was there an influx of people tonight to buy and/or pick Monster's up. We all knew it was going to be big, hence many a cast member being called in to work, but my god every single guest that came in tonight walked out with that movie.
Not to sound Disney biased, working for The Big Cheese himself, but I couldn't stand Ice Age or Shrek. I know both had their respective audiences but neither did a thing for me.

I found something just sad about seeing a THX trailer on a VHS tape. But there it is. Aw what the heck. It's not even a Lucasfilm division anymore...

I don't think Monsters, Inc is as good as the Toy Story movies or Shrek, but I liked it enough to watch it with my regular Smackdown gang (which included an actual KID!) The "Mike's New Car" short is hysterical.

monster's inc was a bust at my video store....60 copies, 50/50 vhs dvd...just 15 copies rented today...we'll see if it picks up on friday night...

well, at my video store, here's how this new movie release day went down:

on dvd: 2 of 2 copies Monsters, Inc. - out, 2 of 2 copies panic room out, 1 of 1 copies of Death to Smoochy (my favourite movie for this week) out, 1 of 1 copies of US seals something or other out. we haven't gotten a couple of other movies for this week yet (problems with the supplier).

on vhs: 6 of 6 copies of Monsters, Inc. out, 1 of 1 copy of Panic Room out, 1 of 2 copies of Death to Smoochy out.

Not too shabby, in all. but, all rentals are only 2 bucks on every single day except friday and saturday nights, when they's 3.55.

Well..I paid 16.99 at Best Buy for it today. Fact is ...its a damn good film animated or not. well worth what anyone may spend on it.

Everything always picks up on Friday and Saturday. I guarantee you that come the weekend, you won't be able to find Monsters, Inc. at my video store.
