University of Miami defensive end Bryan Pata was shot and killed Tuesday night, shortly after leaving the practice field, according to a university official with knowledge of the situation.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity because a formal announcement still was being prepared by the university, had no knowledge of the circumstances surrounding Pata's death.

Miami-Dade police refused to release specific information about what happened.

This is awful news for the Miami program as it will be even more scrutinized than ever. Not a good season for the Hurricanes.

All accounts I've heard so far say that Bryan was a quiet kid off the field and never got into any trouble. It's not really fair to him or to his family for people to hear about this tragedy and think, "Oh, of course! University of Miami!"

I agree. But seriously, was there not one person who was not familiar with him who when they heard of this thought, typical for Miami? This is the image they have in America. My sympathy goes out to the pata family as they have to deal with the death of their son and the fact that 99% of the population ASSUMES he was a typical "Maimi Hurricane convict/gang banger".

Well yeah it's sad if he's a really nice kid who got screwed over by some random insane person.

But of course being Miami my first thought was, "I wonder which teammate killed him?" Followed of course by, "I bet that's a good two game supsension."

I know, I know.
