Can someone explain to me how George W. Bush, and the right in general, can justify the President taking yet another month-long vacation while the country is at war?

So far, Bush has named a new EPA chief, traveled to see the devesation of the forest fires in Arizona, and propogated a fire prevention policy. Vacations for Presidents aren't exactly like they used to be; it's not like the President gets a day off.

Besides, Washington in August sucks.

Clinton used to take off every August as well, as he'd head to Martha's Vineyard or some other place to crash. The big difference of course is that Clinton didn't actually have his own home to go back to.
As for at times of war, Clinton had his Lewinsky testimony/missile attack of '98 while he was commuting between Martha's Vineyard and Washington.
Plus, as Grimis said: Why would any sane person want to be in a former swamp in August when the temperatures are in the 90's most days and the humidity is in the 90's as well.

But isn't Congress not in session in August? And it's not like the Supreme Court is hearing any cases now, either.

Also, to parrot the others, this is more like a "working from home" vacation than a "rest and relaxation" one where nothing gets done. (At least that's how I see it.)

Well, you can argue semantics all you want, you can call it a "war" if you want to or not - our troops are still getting killed pretty much every single day and that doesn't seem to me to be the best time for the President to go fishing with his father and pretend to chop wood for the cameras. I realize he put on a flight suit and waved a "mission accomplished" banner around 75 U.S. casualties ago, but I still think this might've been the time to skip the month off.

If sure if Bush had reason to believe that his doing whatever he's doing this month in Washington rather than from home was going to be the difference between troops being killed for their rebuilding efforts he would stay in DC. But, since he is halfway around the world and, as has been said, won't be doing anything differently, where he spends his days isn't going to save any American lives.
