Boy is this team ever busy.

The Toronto Blue Jays turned their attention to offense on Wednesday night, acquiring first baseman Lyle Overbay from the Milwaukee Brewers for right-hander Dave Bush, outfield prospect Gabe Gross and a player to be named.

On the FAN here is Toronto this morning, there is talk that there will be even more... They still need another good bat in the lineup.

This season should be interesting, that's for sure. If it doesn't work, this team may be the Florida Marlins in the near future...

EDIT: The player to be named not so later is LHP Zach Jackson

Well, this certianly may quash the Vernon Wells/Alex Rios to anywhere/everywhere rumors, since Gabe Gross was one of the guys who would've been able to step in.

Then again, if you can trade Wells and get a better bat in return (and it won't be that much more money I don't think, as Wells makes a tidy sum himself).

The Jays certian have myself (and a free agent FAN since my Expos left home) very interested in their season (but not yet a fan....I have yet to chosea team to cheer for since the demise of my Expos, but that's a different post for a different thread).

This deal pretty much guarantees that at least one of Koskie/Hillenbrand/Hinske will be dealt this offseason, since now Overbay is at first, Koskie at third and Hillenbrand at DH or can spell either of the other two. I think the Jays would deal Hinske for a bag of sunflower seeds at this point, so he's definitely gone (hopefully for some a reliever). Getting Piazza or Nomar is also a stretch at this point since both guys would primarily DH, and the Jays have that spot seemingly filled.

The Blalock rumours are really exciting, and I'd definitely move Hillenbrand (or preferably Koskie) for him. The thing is, if Texas' plan is to move Teixeira to third and Adrian Gonzalez at first, they wouldn't really need another corner infielder. In a perfect world, Toronto would get Manny Ramirez for some combination of Hillenbrand, Rios and maybe Frankie Catalanotto, but I highly doubt Boston deals him to a division rival.

Man, it's so good to see the Jays making actual moves around the hot stove, rather than another offseason of "Hooray, we got Justin Speier!"

Wow, the Blue Jays are spending a nice chunk of change to secure third place.

I don't think that Blalock gets traded and Teixeira moves back to third because Tex is a gold glover at first already. I actually think it's more likely that Gonzalez, rather than Blalock, gets dealt.

Ah yes, the joys of the WILD CARD. You know, I don't think the Jays would be doing this if it wasn't for the wild card spot. If you take a look at thing (baring injuries) they're looking great this year, even compared to the Yankees and Red Sox.

They've got a quality #2 starter, and Ted Liley ain't bad either (he could be a #2 on many teams). The back end of the rotation isn't too bad either....some offense last year would've helped them out.

Oh yeah, I forgot. The Doctor is in this year. His persription? A Cy Young Award.

They just need a run producing bat, and I think they'll make A LOT of noise this year, and will definitly play the Sox and Yankees tough.

BigSteve, just cause Baltimore spent tonnes of money and never finished first or second doesn't mean ALL the the teams that try to compete will =)

Red Sox would probably bring back Captain Carl Everett before they brought back Hillenbrand. And, it would be suicidal to trade Manny within the division, as within the American League would be bad enough. If he is available though, I'd love to see Catalanotto in Boston for no other reason than the fact that he has killed the Red Sox throughout his career.
And, with Toronto opening up the wallet, and Baltimore having money but an inept owner, no one outside the Tampa Bay Devil Rays can cry poverty this year in the American League East. And, Tampa has a dangerous offense.
Also, there is now no excuse for the Blue Jays to draw 17,000 during the hockey playoffs. Red Sox spend the money and bang the ballpark out while getting huge TV ratings. Yankees do the same. Blue Jays are spending the money, now the fans have to do their part.
