Wow...I am surprisingly underwhelmed...

Toronto Raptors trade Jermaine O'Neal to Miami Heat for Shawn Marion, Marcus Banks

The Toronto Raptors have agreed to send Jermaine O'Neal and Jamario Moon to the Miami Heat in exchange for Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks, according to ESPN The Magazine senior writer Ric Bucher.

The deal is pending league approval. All players involved would have to pass physicals as well, although they can be waived by agreement.

The Raptors had acquired O'Neal in the offseason, along with the rights to Nathan Jawai, from the Indiana Pacers, who got T.J. Ford, Rasho Nesterovic, Maceo Baston and a draft pick.

Marion was part of the Phoenix Suns deal in February 2008 that sent him and Banks to Miami for Shaquille O'Neal. Marion is in the last year of a deal that will pay him $17.8 million.

I can see why the Heat pulled the trigger here, since Marion didn't want anything less than a long-term deal and now they can plug Michael Beasley into the starting spot. But man, has time LONG since run out on Jermaine O'Neal. His injuries have left him a shell of what he once was and I don't see him helping the Heat out at all.

I don't get this at all for the Raptors. Sure, they get an expiring contract, but I'm shocked they gave up on O'Neal so quickly. This can't help in keeping Chris Bosh happy, as he'll get a decent player, but only for a few months. I can only think the Raptors are getting ready to blow up the team and start over, which would be a huge shame.

I'll give the Raps credit, it was clear that O'Neal didn't have anything left in the tank and they were smart to cut their losses quickly rather than keep him for the rest of the season and waste the whole year. The bigger problem is that Triano is not an NBA-ready coach. The Marion/Calderon/Bargnani/Bosh quartet is talented enough to take the team to the 8th playoff spot if they get on a real hot streak, but there isn't much time left.
