Overall, I enjoyed the more cartoony The Rise of Cobra (backofthehead.com) more. If you must go see Retaliation, come for The Rock and stay for the color-coded ninjas.
Review (backofthehead.com) with SPOILERS.

| #3 Posted on 1.4.13 0028.24 Reposted on: 1.4.20 0029.01 | I caught this today. You could tell they put a lot more effort into this one than the first movie. It definitely shows, production-wise.
Yeah, pretty standard action movie. Lots of things that don't really make sense, and a lot of the "emotional" moments don't resonate like they probably should.
What really surprised me was how much of a true sequel it was to the terrible first movie. I like continuity in my sequels, though, so it was good that they stuck to a lot of it. It owes more to the first GI Joe movie than it does to the cartoon.
What I did like was the use of Cobra Commander. I thought when he appeared, it was effective and he has a lot more presence when he's on-screen. I'm guessing they won't do Serpentor if they do any further sequels, because some elements of his costume are incorporated into Cobra Commander's helmet.
For all of the continuity they had going on, though, I did miss Dennis Quaid's General Hawk character, and I wish they explained why he wasn't the one they turned to and Bruce Willis was.
Oh, who am I kidding? These movies are stupid and there's really no stakes. But I think GI Joe has adapted better to the screen than Transformers did. | John Orquiola

Main gripe: Why did no one ever say "YO JOE!" once in this film?? They did that Marine-style "HOO!" instead...
Could I pay, say, $2 just to watch the whole ninja-cliff battle in IMAX 3-D? I don't need to see the rest of the film, just that section again please.

I think the main difference between the two films is that the second one bends a little more toward "comic book GI Joe", whereas the first was more "cartoon GI Joe". It's splitting hairs for the general public, but it makes a difference to GI Joe nerds. | ALL ORIGINAL POSTS IN THIS THREAD ARE NOW AVAILABLE |
