So says Joe Schad on Twitter.

Wow. I thought Tennessee showed progress under Kiffin over the course of the year, but I don't know if I think he's ready for this. I think it's a bad move on the part of both USC and Kiffin.

Also, what a crazy, crazy offseason this had been so far for coaching changes. I wonder who Tennessee will hire now?

This is absolutely crazy if true. Just nuts. Tennessee might as well hire Spurrier at this rate.

This coaching carousel reminds me of a few years ago when Virginia Tech, Miami, and Boston College decided to ditch the Big East for the ACC, thus leading to schools switching conferences all willy-nilly.

I say bring back Fulmer! Not because it's a good idea. Do it just because. Actually, a more likely hire would be stealing back Dook's coach, David Cutcliffe.

The Vols fans absolutely loved Kiffin and believed he would lead them to the top, so naturally they are going insane on the message boards right now with anger. Almost all their top recruits are said to be leaving, even EE's since classes don't start till tomorrow so they can split.

Plus with Lane taking Orgeron and daddy with him, and them already losing a couple assistants to other jobs, they have no good in house candidates to take over and give kids a reason to stay.

This with Urban up in the air and USC and USF, has thrown recruiting overall into something I've never seen. Certainly good opportunity for my team, so I'm thrilled.

Dumb question: Has Tommy Tuberville actually SIGNED his contract at Texas Tech yet? If not, he actually would be a much better fit at Tennessee. Or, just so the carousel keeps spinning round and round, have Jim Mora Jr. go to the Vols.

Ok, I'm a casual college football fan, so I'll ask. Do coaching contracts mean ANYTHING anymore? Between Brian Kelly and Lane Kiffin, it makes me wonder if having a coach signed to a deal matters if they just wind up going wherever they want anyway.

Kiffin, in particular, baffles me. After all the talk he did about stomping Urban Meyer and Florida, he loses a few games to them and decides to split. It comes across to me as a lack of integrity.

I thought this tweet by Jason Whitlock summed it up pretty well ...

WhitlockJason Lane Kiffin: dad a defensive genius, scorching-hot wife, Raiders job, Tenn job, USC job. Has he earned any of it or right place right time?

Although I now like this one just as much ...

From the venom I'm seeing tonight I sure hope he gets out of town quickly after the team meeting at 9pm. Those fans may very well attack him.

Even a rumor of them trying to bring Norm Chow in to USC too, though it's not a done deal yet.

That's the first thing I thought too. Spurrier at Tennessee would be the only thing crazier than this. I don't know if there is any possibility of that at all but surely Spurrier/South Carolina can't go on much longer can it?

I thought Kiffin did about as good as possible for one season (didn't get killed by Florida and should have beat Alabama) but not THAT good. At the very least this will make the Pac-10 a lot more interesting between Kiffin's mouth and USC coming back down to the pack and the SEC is a lot less interesting with Kiffin gone and Florida probably rebuilding with their own coach up in the air.

Here's a list, off the top of my head, of schools which will have a new head coach when next season starts. I am probably forgetting/don't know about at least one or two.

USC
USF
Tennessee
Cincinnati
Central Michigan
Texas Tech
Buffalo
Florida State (technically at least)
Virginia

And two maybes:
Florida
East Carolina, if USF does in fact hire Skip Holtz.

Plus, with Tennessee now looking for a coach, there could be more possibly.

That's at least nine schools, with seven of those nine in BCS conferences. I can't be bothered to compare that with previous years, but it sure SEEMS like a lot.

EDIT: It seems like it has been ages since Charlie Weis was fired. I can't believe I forgot Notre Dame. And Kansas. And Louisville.

Too late, word from UT is a student mob has formed around the athletic center. Not a great pic of it, but it's a start until the cameras get there:

http://i48.tinypic.com/ 2q3urzo.jpg

"Also, the players are just now getting out of the meeting with Kiffin and safe to say the news was not well received. One unidentified player yelled as he passed reporters 'All you all need to do is that they're a bunch of *^*&*^* traitors."

Oh plus riot police. FUN!

edit: they have a set a mattress on fire outside of the building and are throwing their "It's Time" Vols shirts into the fire. players and fans.

OK, I'll try to stop the updates for now, it's just like xmas for college fans after how annoying UT fans were this year.

I love the total chaos this has started. The entire college football landscape seems to have been overcome with a very brief feeling of anarchy.

And I hope Lane Kiffin knows what he's doing, for his own sake. If things don't work out for him at USC, he's never going to find a job again.

Amazing how fast this has happened. Mora was fired Jan. 8. Carroll was hired at Seattle officially Jan. 11. Kiffin was hired at USC on Jan. 12. And now, reportedly, Tennessee has offered its job to Will Muschamp, still on Jan. 12. That's amazing.

This really says it all. I can't believe anyone out here in Los Angeles is excited about this. If USC has another year like this year, does anyone really think Kiffin wouldn't take off like a bandit if he gets offered another NFL gig?

So are the pending USC sanctions not that serious? Otherwise, I can't imagine someone leaving a good situation and a devoted fanbase to go to a school that's about to have the hammer dropped on them by the NCAA. Or does money cure all?

I guess if you're Kiffin you can go get paid a ton at USC and if the hammer drops you also get the benefit of low expectations while on probation.

edit: gee, I wonder what text message he got

I really haven't followed college football much in the past five or six years, but UT was my favorite team.

This is just a punch in the gut.

I hope he gets hit with a ton of sanctions at USC and can't recruit a single player.
