Okay, yesterday I made an offhand remark to a friend along the lines of "gee, it would be nice to see the Bears take a shot at someone line that for once." when I heard about Mushin Muhammad being released. This shocks the hell out of me. Great move for Jerry Angelo, as the offense desperately needed a legitimate #1 WR.

Muhammad likely to get $10 million in guarantees (sports.espn.go.com)

Oh man. As a Panthers fan, that really bums me out. Great pickup for the Bears though.

I'd like to see them address the OL in this draft with their top pick. I like Tait, and Kreutz is awesome, but the rest of the line is rather week. I know the QB's were awful last year, but some of that was due to them getting no time at all.

Muhammad is a great signing for the Bears. Unfortunately, not having anyone who can throw a forward pass to him could lessen his impact.

Just f'n wonderful. Just when I thought our crappy pass defense could rest a bit after having gotten rid of Randy Moss...the f'n Bears pretend they're an NFL franchise and sign a talented player.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned what this could do for David Terrell. Terrell has looked to me at points like he could be a very good NFL receiver, but the combination of poor quarterbacks and getting #1 WR attention from opposing defenses has been too much to overcome. If the Bears can somehow find someone who can throw a pass to take a few snaps for them this season, they just might be able to put some points on the board with those two guys playing side by side.

Nah - I think Terrell is an a$$ who won't be ready to accept that he might be the #2 receiver on a team. He complained last year, IIRC, about not getting enough touches. He was roundly and frequently criticized by the Chicago media.

I'm still not sold on Grossman at QB, either. He's gotta stay healthy. Remember, he has all of what, 6 games, under his belt?

Grossman is a solid QB and if healthy, will take the Bears as far as his O-Line will let him. They just need to go out and get a solid #2 behind him. I think we all know how that went last year.

True Grossman has only played like 6 games, but that means we don't know that he's bad, we don't know yet and it's not like he's only played 6 games because he's been injured for 4 years. He's had one injury. Let the guy play this year and we'll see. Heck, i'm biased because I'm a Gators fan, but watching the Gators as closely as I have I KNOW he's not one of those guys like Wuerffel, Johson, and Palmer who was just good because of Spurrier's offense, he's actually got the talent and the tools.

I agree that Terrell is probably going to be an ass though, I'd still get a receiver as the first round pick, yeah they need offensive lineman, but I don't think there's anyone good enough to justify the #4 pick, maybe if they traded down and got something good or just traded the pick for a player.

There's no way that Terrell ends up playing for this team next year. Esp. if the Bears draft a WR in the first round. A lot of mock drafts have Braylon Edwards coming in the #4 spot. Personally I still have a soft spot for Mike Williams, even with the year off. But either way, I see the Bears with a WR corps of Muhammad, draft pick, Bobby Wade, and Justin Gage.

$12 million signing bonus for MUSHIN MUHAMMAD? I really think that's nuts.

And... Terrell is gone.

Wow does this make me happy. I think A-Train could actually be quite good again if there were a decent O-line and some sort of pass attack to take the pressure off him.

Here's the #1 receiver we needed and Grossman now has someone good to throw to while learning. We have the makings of a decent defense.

As spf said, we should draft O-line all the way, then let A-Train and Muhammad be prepared to carry a huge load this year until we can get a second receiver! (and no, Justin Gage doesn't cut it).

He almost carried the Panthers broken offense to the Playoffs. The Bears play in the NFC North. Having Mushin play the way he did last year could easily put them at the top of their division.

From jaguars.com's Vic Ketchman http://www.jaguars.com/story/4222.asp:

Andrew from Melbourne, Australia: What do you think of the Bears signing Muhsin Muhammad to a six-year contract with a $12 million signing bonus. After three very average years, he posted a huge year last year, but, at 32, do you think he's worth that type of money?

Vic: When I see a deal like that, all I can do is scratch my head and wonder why some teams don't get it. You're gonna have to spend top dollar at the premium positions, but you shouldn't at wide receiver; not unless the guy is a truly special wide receiver. Even at that, I wouldn't do it. You should be able to find wide receivers in bargain ways. Terrell Owens and Hines Ward were third-round picks. Keenan McCardell was an 11th-round pick. Jimmy Smith came to the Jaguars as a street free agent. Just look at the list of first-round wide receivers who turned out to be busts. I like what the Jaguars got out of Ernest Wilford in the fourth round, and I think Cortez Hankton has real ability and he came to the Jags as undrafted free agent.

I hate to say, I don't see Anthony Thomas coming back unless something happens to Thomas Jones. No way he wants to be a backup again, although I wish he would stay. I'm hoping the Bears can trade down and somehow get Mike Williams early and a tackle late in the first round, but it doesn't seem like anyone's interested in the 4th pick. I'd be perfectly happy with a Jones/Ronnie Brown rotation at RB if we stick with the 4th pick.

Good move by Angelo with Muhammad, as well as the releasing of Terrell. I thought last year we should have picked up Drew Henson and recreated the Michigan offense with him, Thomas, and Terrell. But David never stepped up and looked anything like he did at Michigan, and now he will be perfectly happy whining somewhere else.

Some teams are just moments away from becoming a playoff team. They usually have enough pieces to get them there, and are just waiting for something to click. Throwing big money around to try and force the team to click by adding more pieces usually fails (hello, Redskins!).

However, the Bears are not one of those teams. They don't have any pieces to work with. They have no set offense, so there are no starters who should grumble when the Bears say, "Hey guys! We've got the big Moose. We're going to try and emulate everything the Panthers did with him last year, and that'll hopefully give us a few more wins!" I really don't see how having Moose on the team hurts the Bears at all. I think he'll get them those key wins.

-Jag

Provided, of course, that they look at the tape and see *how* Jake to Muhammad was successful and try to recreate that. The worst thing teams do is take a guy from another team and try and fit him into how they think the team should work, instead of just playing to their strengths.

Yeah, the guy is a bum. He's been in the league five years and accomplished nothing. The fact that he took Anthony Thomas' job never made any sense to me, considering Thomas' career average (going into 2004) for rushing yards in a season is better than Jones' career high of 948 this year. Jones had a whopping 61 yards per start after September, compared to Thomas' 93 yards per game when he was the primary back.

What people see in Thomas Jones is beyond me.
