...and there was much rejoicing. (philadelphia.phillies.mlb.com)

Let the Cashman rumors begin if the Yanks lose tonight.

This comes one day after this gem from ESPN.com

He couldn't get Bobby Abreu to take over in September, but that may never happen. The Wade regime has spent a lot of money and has made some mistakes, but Ed had his best year.

You definitely can't fault the GM in this case. He really tried to build a winning team, but the talent and manager just couldn't get it done. Wade will get scooped up quickly, maybe by the New Devil Rays.

Ed Wade's probably one of the most hated men in Philadelphia sports (and certainly the most hated non-athlete in Philadelphia sports). I don't necessarily think that he should have been fired because of the team's poor performance, but if he didn't go, the attendance would drop even further.

The Phillies need to win back the fans. The local trolls at 610 WIP and many media writers have bashed Wade and the organization for the past several years. There is just a very negative feeling towards the team, and the new stadium novelty wore off rather quickly. Bringing in a fresh face who is not affiliated with the Phillies in any way might win back some fans, especially if he has good credentials or makes some early brilliant moves. Of course, knowing the Phillies, your next GM will be Ruben Amaro, Jr. or Lee Thomas.

I wonder if Charlie Manual is going to have a job for much longer.

Wade certainly tried and spent the money, but he made bad decisions (in hindsight) and unpopular ones. He was a nice enough man, but he was just very, very tow-the-company-line and the non-interview-process of replacing Bowa really turned people against him for good. They needed to make a change somewhere...hopefully the new GM will find a creative way to unload Thome to an AL team. But I`m guessing Manual will stick around at least one more season regardless though.
